Ed,

Alt +0178 and alt+0179 (on the numerical keypad) give superscript 2 and
superscript 3.
Superscript 1 is alt+0185.

Sorry, I am half asleep and your request didn't penetrate as far as it
should have.
I showed superscripts, you asked for subscripts.

Hi NoteTabbers,

Is there, perhaps, any user of Omea Reader or Omea Reader Pro?
http://www.jetbrains.com/index.html
What do you think about it? Is it worth of trying? Judging by the
description on the homepage, it is not only a 'reader' but also an
information
manager that looks quite promissing. The Pro version is in the beta stage
and free (so far...) Unfortunatelly, it needs MS Net Framework.

Best greetings,

Wojciech (Subscriber)

No, I was asleep and wrote subscripts when I meant superscripts. You
wrote exactly what I am using but so far I cannot get them by W3C's HTML
validator.

I read with interest the thread on NTB regarding Steve having to go
into Properties to "unblock" his Notetab download file. I tried
downloading NTL on my machine with IE and got the same results. I did
some googling and found that it is from the "Safe Attachment Execution
Service". Here's the info:

"You will also notice that XP SP2 has a new "Safe Attachment Execution
Service" that prevents running potentially dangerous types of files
that are either downloaded through a Web browser or received through
email or an instant message. Applications in Windows XP that support
downloading attachments - IE, Outlook Express, and Windows Messenger -
will be supported immediately. However, third party software
companies will need to build support into their applications. This
feature works the same way in all XP applications: Any file you
download in IE that the service deems unsafe (such as a .pif, .scr, or
.exe) will initially be "soft-blocked" (clients will see a pop-up
warning). If the file is downloaded, a second warning message will
appear when you try to run the downloaded file, asking if you are sure
you want to run it. Clicking the Run button will execute the file.

"But if you are using Outlook Express or Windows Messenger, and you
override the first warning message, the file will appear on your hard
drive in a "hard-blocked" state – it will not run unless you
deliberately go into that downloaded program's Properties dialog box
and manually click a button labeled Unblock within its Advance
Properties tab." - from
http://intra1.jhsph.edu/Administration/InformationSystems/Support/winSP2Info.htm\
l

One thing of note is this only works if you save to an NTFS drive.
Saving to a FAT32 drive doesn't enable the unblock button. My first
try was saving it to a remote NTFS drive (where my Desktop is stored)
- that did enable the unblock button. My guess is the NTFS spec allows
for extra attributes to be used (since my Desktop is stored on a Win2k
Server machine)

I didn't see an explicit service in services.msc so I wonder if you
can disable it. I'm glad Firefox and Mozilla haven't implemented this
- it'd be nightmare if I had to go unblock ever download!

LOL Sometimes things turn out for the best. :-)

What error do you get? I don't think there is a problem with those
characters if you use iso-8859-1.
http://snipurl.com/b15y

If you use UTF-8 you have to use entities since Notepad can't output unicode.

Note that the validator chokes first on line 14 where the sup characters
are typed with keyboard.

The other option is to use HTML "entities" for them. E.g. ² or ² for
superscript two. An extensive list is at
http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_entitiesref.asp and other web sites.

These will work, I used them and got a no validate from W3c but, it was
three periods in a row at the same point that is was objecting to, not
as I first thought the $#178 which is what I used. After I found the 3
periods which indicate usually that you are skipping the first part or
the last part of a sentence and using only the part that makes the point
you wish to make. Now the computer has just developed a thing to change
the fonts and font size in the middle of the road. I did not do this
myself, at least not intentionally. Wow just look at what this ing is
doing. What is going on here???

Ed,

I noticed the last few messages, this may help, if it suits, substitute
this entity for the 3 periods. I don't know which form to try, just
trial and error.

horizontal ellipsis = three dot leader … … …

It's better typographically speaking and much prettier, but three periods
won't make the validator cough. There must be something else amiss. Maybe
you could show us the page Ed, or at least tell us what error you get?

Can't do because I uploaded the new page after removing the ... and it
then validated. Why hiccupped I do not know. I had 2 instances of 3
dots in one paragraph and it choked on both of them. I removed them and
it worked. I do not argue with success. ;-)

Greetings Experts: This is a general problem but came up over
installation of notetabpro 4.95- and AFTER installation of service pack
2 (running XP with 512MB ram)- After SP2, my existing NT4.95 would
rarely load- gave me errors like- list index out of bounds- - so I
decided to de-install and re-install. But when I tried to run the
notetab495 setup file (ntp495wp.exe,freshly downloaded from Fookes) it
gave me an error- has done something illegal.. and failed to run.
REbooting had no effect, re-downloading no effect- running spybot
software to eliminate adware etc- no effect- with or without virus
protection running- no effect- crashed everytime./
Then I recalled I had a similar problem with Nero6- the CD burner- I
had been using Nero5 but that will not run under SP2 (surprise !!) - so
I downloaded nero6 installation upgrade- and it failed - it opens a zip
file and a large number of installation programmes and many of them
upon extraction said CRC FAilure. Again re-booting etc- no help- so
probably something on my computer conflicts with SP2 and that conflicts
with windows installation...
any ideas out there in cyber land ??
thanks

Barry

Hi,

Just one idea comes to mind. Not a clue whether it your issue or not.

But doesn't some XP either Pro or Home or both have ability for
encryption file system? encrypt--decrypt on the fly.

If that's turned on and there is something wrong with that
feature . . . well then, be looking at all kinds of translation
failures.

Are you install, not as a user, but as an administrator privileges?

The two (nero and NTP) listed, is that the only problems, everything
else works fine?

I've had even only slightly incompatible memory sticks cause
likewise, similar, as your listed pattern (this usually strikes at
random though, not consistently and repeatedly on only 1 or 2 same
programs).

Perhaps there's something common, used by Nero and NTP that has a bit
of a problem. Alan.

Hi Barry,

You need a key for that file (unless you have an installed
version on your hard drive that is recognized as upgradable), but
that does not explain why it wouldn't run. You'll need to write
me at Jody@... with your registration details for more
assistance with the "wp" file.

Ed, right-click on it and rename.
If it is actually a Word doc, it will open.
The first thing the program does is check the file extension. It's like a
lazy kid. If it fails to recognize the extension, it stops cold. No
suggestions, no continuing thought or problem solving, etc. It just sits
there with its finger in its nose complaining about being bored.

Ed,

If none of the above apply, try to right-click the icon and choose
properties, trying to determine if it is actually just a shortcut that
loaded the 'absent' 'small electronic book' into Word.

LNK is the default extension for Windows shortcuts, after
right-clicking, the resulting pop-up dialog box should confirm that it
is a shortcut only.

*.ink is an extension for a shortcut. In the original computer the
sender should attach the original file from the original location.

Hello

Download a small utility called FileDrag. This utility shall reveal which
program is required to open the file.

If it's a link, the document isn't there - it's still on the original computer.
:-(

If you do a properties on the file, if it's a link it'll show you what it points
at. If you don't have that file, there's not much you can do - but at least
you'll know for sure that it's a link.

abair,

My clipbar icons, with a few exceptions, start clips. I do start a few
utilities from the clipbar, Urlrun, Tidy, Txtprint and WordWeb.

I don't have any of those set up to show status change as I do others
but, offhand, I don't see any real problem.

It would require some additional clip program lines, and, it would
require an icon to show each state, operational, non-operational, 14
distinct icons to show status for 7 utilities.

You don't need an individual clipbar file to show status. Only one
clipbar file, or 2 if you want some of the same utilities on both
clipbars. The clipbar file is edited on the fly, to change the icon
only for the affected utility or clip.

Your last comment, was that about the ^!TextToFile command?

If we're going to keep this thread going we should probably take it over
to the Off-Topic list, it really isn't off topic but we have a freer
range of discussion there, and, it will keep Jody off us.

I'll copy this to Off-Topic also, let's pick it up from there.

Just an FYI for all of you using any Yahoo groups:

For your information ...

Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to track Yahoo Group
users around the net and see what you're doing and where you are going -
similar to cookies. Yahoo is recording every website and every group you
visit. Take a look at their updated privacy statement:

http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy

About half-way down the page, in the section on cookies, you will see a
link that says web beacons. Click on the phrase web beacons. that wil
bring you to a paragraph entitled "Outside the Yahoo Network."

In this section you'll see a little "click here to opt out" link that
will let you "opt-out" of their new method of snooping.

Once you have clicked that link, you are exempted.

Notice the "Success" message on the top of the next page. Be careful
because on that page there is a "Cancel Opt-out" button that, if
clicked, will *undo** the opt-out.

This practise has been adopted for some time now by a number of 'Search
Engines' (even though it's been denied) who have been monitoring trafic
through their systems. There used to be a website that you could go to that
provided up to the minute statistics of worldwide preferences and how do you
suppose that was possible if traffic was not being monitored. I've lost the
URL now (maybe someone can find it) but when I did have a look some time ago
it came as no surprise that more than 60% was linked to pornography of some
kind!! There's nothing new.

Take care Barry UK
