How does one create a "Description" which will be shown for a particular
file/folder?

The "Description" field is displayed for any type of file.
So, I have no idea where the info for the "Description" would be coming
from.
Thanks,

AFAIK, whenever you have not uploaded a file named index.htm or
index.html to that particular folder on a web server, it is up to the
admin of the server as to what or if anything at all other than the
admin's placeholder will display when a folder (as per your http url
below) is the entry in the address field of a web browser.
You might ask on the ntb-html or whatever the html email list is.
But you said Unix, (not http [like Apache] web server) but you
simultaneously shared an http url -- thus as to what I shared above I'm
not certain it's the particular case scenario that you seek in this
case. | Alan.

So maybe the file descriptions can be designated using Cpanel.
I will look into that.

You probably need to use .htaccess, but I don't know what might be
hidden in CPanel. I think you are looking for FancyIndexing and
AddDescription. You'd better start reading here thought (there are
links to those directives in the summary at top).
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_autoindex.html
Create a special folder just for testing and play around with a
.htaccess file in that. Then you don't risk messing something up
site-wide. Put some other files in there too or there won't be
anything to index.

Found this:

Tested out OK.
I really don't need the AddDescription in my directories, but I curious
about it.

Greetings,
If you have a late model Mac would you see if you can run the audio
clips here:
http://juniornaturecamp.org/2011/voice/
I had one person check on a Mac with "Intel proc, OS 10.7, Latest
safari" and they had no problems.
Another person checked and could not run the clips but would not elaborate.
So, I need some corroboration.
Thanks,

Hi,
I've created a mess, but I don't know how it happened so I can't fix
it. All I wanted to do was to change the default folder icon. In
Folder Options | File Types I had (still have) two entries, one is
called "Folder" and the other "File Folder". For Folder the "Change
Icon" button is grayed out, so I changed the icon for File Folder.
The new icon shows up in the list, but it did nothing for the folders
on my desktop or anywhere else. Question: what the heck is the
difference between Folder and File Folder?
I can live with that, but it also had a not wanted effect. Now VLC
Media Player tried to open all folders when I double clicked on them
or hit enter. Not so great. Browsing folders from a program, like
Notetab's File Open dialog works as it should as does right-clicking
on a folder and choosing Open or Explore from the context menu.
Hard to google, find mostly how to open a whole folder in a program,
but I found this on MetaFilter.
http://ask.metafilter.com/30704/How-to-set-up-program-association-for-opening-fo\
lders
No luck with that either. Both the default action in Folder Options
and the registry entries already were as they should. Then I turned
to VLC. Seems they have removed file associations from Options and
that dialogue is only available during setup - how clever is that? So
I uninstalled VLC. There! Uh, no. Now another media player tries to
open folders. I have a feeling I could be uninstalling programs till
doomsday or until I don't have any programs left, whatever comes
first. There must be a better way.
Any ideas? Oh, I'm on Windows XP Home.

Actually, the default action is OK for Folder. For File Folder (the
one I changed icon for although it didn't take) the expected options
aren't available.
For Folder I have these.
explore (default)
open
command prompt (added by me)
... and some others I've added
For File Folder I have these.
add to send to menu
command prompt
... a number of program specific commands
Seems the Windows commands are split over those two entries???

How come you your IQ goes up with at least 50% as soon as you ask a
question? :-D
I added the Explore comand executed by explorer.exe for File Folder.
Now the folders open normally (touch wood!) when double clicking. I
still don't get what's up with those two folder types and why the
commands are split between them though.

What does "P.G." stand for on a computer power supply tester?
The tester has an LCD screen on which various voltages are displayed. It
also shows a value for P.G. in milliseconds. The user manual doesn't say
what the measurement is for, but it does show an upper and lower range of
acceptable values to be between 200ms and 500ms.
Thanks for the help.

This is a sample of the images I am working with, photos of over 10,000
crypt markers at a national Cemetery.
I am wanting to crop out each marker from the image and save the
cropped section as a new JPG. Ideally I will be able to select the area,
and (like in Notetab) cut to a new document and save serially, in a
target directory. The resulting images will be posted to
http://www.findagrave.com
I use several "freeware" programs but none seem to have this function
without going through tedious gymnastics.
I am fixed income and do not have Photoshop.
Any ideas?

If Photoshop will do it, then you can be pretty sure the excellent
(open source) GIMP will do it:
http://www.gimp.org
The script required will be pretty complex but, without trying
(because I don't use its scripting functions myself) I can't swear it
can do it.
However, I'd recommend that you subscribe to the GIMP User List:
http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list
and ask there. There are some real wizards there whom I am sure would
guide you, if not produce the script or prepare a tutorial to show you
how.

Adrian, as it works there it ought to work elsewhere too. Im a bit

398 errors and contains two frames. Make sure you really copy everything
that's needed and forget nothing. If they get it to work, so can you.

I have searched with other words, and found:
http://www.macmillandictionary.com/tools/doubleclick.html
Less complicated. But if I changed macmilland to Wikipedia (what I want
to do) it doesn't work anymore.
Nevermind! I have dropped this. Because most browsers, direct or
indirect, are capable on a selected word to search in Wikipedia.

Greetings,
I added an .htaccess file and then entered a URL with mixed case. With
the following URL I had no 404s with mixed case and it was directed to
the correct URL.
http://dollysods.org/Pixels2inches.php_files/
But, if I added another directory and tried the mixed case, I get a 404.

Questions:
How do I change the rules so that any subdir is case insensitive?
Is there a better way to accomplish this?
Are there any drawbacks or pit falls to using this?
Thanks,

If you have or can get Apache Module mod_speling (note the single l) you
can assert:
CheckCaseOnly on
See:
<http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/mod/mod_speling.html#checkcaseonly>

Hi Notetabbers,
I want to create PDF files from Word documents that are universally
readable. My Google searches bring up lots of references to making PDFs
that are accessible to visually handicapped users, but I didn't see any
advice on software that will create PDFs that are readable by a wide
variety of Acrobat Reader versions.
The problem came up because one member of our club had trouble opening a
one-page flyer at:
www.asterism.org/events/Mars
2012-03-10.pdf<http://www.asterism.org/events/Mars%202012-03-10.pdf>
Checking "Properties" of that file, the "Size on disk" is 880 KB (901,120
bytes).
The member claims his software/hardware PC setup is very old, and that I
have used a PDF creator that is incompatible with his equipment. He is
unwilling to upgrade the free Adobe Reader or any other part of his setup.
Prior to this instance, it was my belief that PDF files were universally
readable by all versions of Adobe Reader.
My question: do you have experience with an application that will create
PDF files from DOC files that can be read on PCs by older versions of Adobe
Reader as well as more current versions?
Thanks for the help.

I use PDF reDirect. It is essentially a printer to pdf format. Like it
a lot. Nobody has ever claimed that they can't open my stuff.
In his case copy and paste plain text.

This one I can empathise with. I too object to permanent updating and
new for being new's sake when my existing setup does all I want and the
new version has no conceivable benfit for my needs. This is why I
customarily write PDF 1.2 and occasionally test with the Adobe reader
version 3 under Windows 3.11.
Your example is not bad though, it is version 1.4 for Reader 5.0. You
might have made the huge image a bit smaller at no perceivable loss, but
that's not the issue here. You might try your member on
<http://berger-odenthal.de/upload/V12.pdf>. I ran my batch "mk2" over
it:
----------------------------------------------
@ echo off
iff "%1" == "" then
echo Parameters: Source [Destination without EXT] /or/ ALL
GOTO finish
endiff
set path=F:\Winutil\ghost\gs8.71\lib;F:\Winutil\ghost\gs8.71\bin;%path%
iff "%1" = "all" then
REM echo %path%
echo process all
mkdir V12
FOR %d IN (*.pdf) DO CALL ps2pdf12.bat %d V12\%d
else
REM echo on
REM echo %path%
call ps2pdf12.bat %1 %@IF["%2 " GT " ",%temp%\%2.pdf,%temp%\12-%1]
endiff
:finish
pause Fertig - press a key
----------------------------------------------
The batch is written for 4DOS and uses ghostscript.

New versions introduced new features, some of them useful. I convert
Microsoft to PDF with openOffice, but that too only writes version 1.4,
so the tool of choice is ghostscript. You can get a graphic interface
through Ghostview, but it is not particularly easy to use and I find the
command line much easier.
By the way: spaces in filenames are evil, especially when using command
line tools. Don't do it.
