Ancestry has changed a lot of past "offers" over time, when they started
buying up all the competition.
Rootsweb used to be independent, and offered "unlimited" space for
genealogy related sites, the purpose WAS to provide no fee access to
data, vs. what ancestry was doing, and still is. More and more public
records are being distributed by subscription to private databases, like
ancestry. Rootsweb became valuable enough that the former owners who
were going broke, finally caved and sold it. Now it is part of what it
opposed, a gateway to subscription data.
