Sam,

Try this - http://netscape.com/ - for Netscape browser,

when the page finishes loading.

Or, try

http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/

Mozilla is Netscape before Netscape get their hands on it.

OK, let's take it a point at a time.

To begin with, most Windows versions since Win95 (except the very first
version of Win95) come with a copy of Internet Explorer. All of them
can have a more recent version installed for free, by visiting Windows
Update or the page http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx ,
with the following comments:

1- Win95, Win98 "first edition" and (I think) Windows NT 4 can only be
upgraded to Internet Explorer 5.5, which is already a four years old
browser, and has a number of well-known rendering bugs;
2- The latest version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP (IE 6.0 sp2)
is only available as part of the Windows XP Service Pack 2, and not
available at all to other versions of Windows.
3- All of them have some updates to be downloaded after the installation
(mostly related to plugging part of the security holes in IE), usually
from Windows Update.
4- EVEN the latest IE (the one in WinXP S2) has known rendering bugs,
some of them pretty important. Microsoft manifested no intention of
fixing them in the foreseeable future. And all of them have known
security bugs, and new ones are frequently.

So, no, I don't like IE very much, although I use it now and then when I
have to visit a site which was badly designed and tested only on IE.
Even so, I only do that if I'm reasonably sure of the honesty and
trustworthyness of the company which owns the site.

Alternative browsers, then. Let's take them one at a time:

1- Old-style Netscape (version 4.x and lower): You can still find it
around, but it's very buggy and hopelessly obsolete by now, and almost
nobody still uses it. Only install it if you NEED to test your design
in this environment.
2- New-style Netscape (version 7.2): Based on Mozilla Suite 1.7. Unless
you are an AOL subscriber, I don't see much point to this: it's
basically a Mozilla with a lot of AOL-specific crap added to it. And
they only update it about once a year, while Mozilla is updated about
quarterly.
3- Mozilla Application Suite: ( http://www.mozilla.org ) The latest
"release" version is 1.7.3, and there's a beta version of 1.8 in use
too. That's what I use at present, although I'm considering migrating to
the new stand-alone applications (Firefox/Thunderbird/nView/Sunbird)
sometime in the future. It's a complete suite (browser+e-mail+HTML
composer+IRC chat), but many people feel it's too big and bloated. If
you are going to use it in older hardware and/or need only the browser,
look at Firefox.
4- Mozilla Firefox: Also from the Mozilla site. The new kid on the
block. A reengineered stand-alone browser product. It's NOT "just
Mozilla with the other stuff cut out;" it actually uses a more
advanced (and easier) user interface than the Mozilla Suite. The guts
(rendering engine) are the same as the Mozilla Suite, so pages should
render identically in both. The latest version is the 1.0 "preview
release," which is fancy talk to say "We're almost there, give us a
couple more weeks." The 1.0 Final version should be released about
one week after the U.S. elections.
5- Opera ( http://www.opera.com ): another fine, lightweight browser,
which for years have been considered one of the best around, despite its
small presence in the market. This one is not exactly free: you can
use it for free in an "ad-sponsered" mode (with a small banner ad
appearing on the window) or buy it and get rid of the ads.

All of these should run in anything from Win95 to WinXP (and probably
even in the Longhorn betas), although in older computers I recommend
only Firefox and Opera.

Being a big fan of CSS design a few of my favorite sites that show
different designs are:

http://www.csszengarden.com/ - CSS Zen Garden- this site is excellent
for seeing how different style sheets can completely change a sites
design even while maintaining the same HTML.

http://www.bluerobot.com/web/layouts/ - The Blue Robot showing a few
basic CSS Design templates.

http://www.alistapart.com/ - articles on HTML, CSS etc with many
articles on site design.

I had a link once but can't find it now, to a site that would randomly
create a css style sheet for a particular page by varying certain
parameters. When a "good" one was discovered the style sheet that generated
it could be d/l'd for your own use.

Has anyone else seen this or (better) have the link?

I'm trying to minimize time in updating and composing new pages for our
web pages and have not yet learned CSS so am using XHTML 1.0
Transitional by means of Notetab Pro and Tidy HTML.
Using W3C validator on the web I validated the index page for
www.wschs-grf.pon.net but the Fast Counter no longer comes up nor does
the W3C logo in Mozilla or Firefox. Netcaptor Pro (on IE 5.5) is OK as
is Opera 7.5.3. Anybody seen something like this?

I tested the page in both Mozilla 1.8a4 and Firefox 1.0RC1 and the page
works for me. I see both the W3C logo and the counter, and the counter
incremented between views. Must be some problem with your Mozilla install.

Paul,

I use Mozilla and if you are speaking of the address in the email the
FC, FastCounter and the W3C logo are both visible to me.

FastCounter count is 9231.

Dear Notetabbers:
Is this the proper forum for querying members and Notetab experts about
website construction using either XHTML or CSS? I see W3C will
validate both and I use Notetab Pro 4.95. I love its ease of use and
features abounding. What are the advantages in using style sheets if I
can be reasonably competent using XHTML? I'm not interested in making
pages look like a slick e-zine or printed magazine, i.e., with multiple
columns and eye-bothering boxes here, there and all over the page. Will
CSS help with navigation? What are its real advantages to a person who
manages a volunteer website, no sales, informational only (mostly),
accepting questions and feedback on Burbank plant varieties, providing
tours, etc.? We are the Western Sonoma County Historical Society with
particular attention to the relic of the Burbank Experiment Farm
(1885-1926) in addition to managing a small museum in Sebastopol CA
USA.

It's not either XHTML or CSS. It's XHTML and CSS!! CSS styles the
xhtml markup which makes it much cleaner, more accessible and easier to
make changes since they are global. You can get a good idea of the
power of CSS by looking at this site http://www.csszengarden.com/.

Steve,
I am trying to learn more about CSS and XHTML, so I checked out your site. I
like your html code, it's very clean with the use of the <div> tags. Do you
know how I can view the stylesheets/sncstyle.css.

Hi John,

Thank you.

  >Do you know how I can view the stylesheets/sncstyle.css.<

Option 1-
The style sheets can be viewed using the following links.
http://www.snc-cds.com/stylesheets/sncstyle.css
http://www.snc-cds.com/stylesheets/sncstyle1.css

Option 2
If you are using the Firefox web browser use the Web developer tool bar
(available at http://www.chrispederick.com/work/firefox/webdeveloper/)
and view/edit the style sheet using the tool bar. This tool bar is a
very handy tool in seeing how a style sheet can effect the page as well
many other uses. Another good reason to switch to Firefox.

there are two ways:
one type the url in your browser:
http://www.snc-cds.com/stylesheets/sncstyle.css
two use firefox with the web developer extension and click on edit css

if you have not tried firefox yet (free at http://mozilla.org ) you
should -- it did for browsers what notetab did for text/code editors for me

There is an "edit styles" bookmarklet at
http://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/webdevel.html that should be
good, I use it when I want to toy with css I'm working on, it lets you
see changes you are making real time. It only works in a mozilla
browser though, such as firefox, I prefer to use bookmarklets instead
of extensions when possible because it makes upgrades easier, you
don't need to update bookmarklets every time you update you version of
firefox.
Firefox is the best IMHO www.firefox.com

They are two totally different browsers. Netscape 4.x is 6+ years old and
will make you want to cry if you try to make it understand CSS. Modern
Netscape is based on Mozilla, the perhaps most Standards savvy browser around.

>Do I need both program or I need one .

I'd say both. Even if you choose to hide CSS from Navigator, you'd still
want to see that the hiding works and that nothing else rakes havoc too much.

>If I need one which one must I have .

Mozilla, or its slimmed down offspring Firefox. No need to install Netscape
7, I think. It uses Gecko, the rendering engine from Moz, and adds bloat
you probably don't want, like AOL messenger. Both available from here:
http://mozilla.org
AOL has killed the old Netscape browser archive, but Navigator can be
downloaded from Evolt.

If you are developing websites, it's best to have as many browsers as
possible for testing purposes. It will take a little work and a few
hacks to get cross-browser compatibility though.

I have NN 4.79, 6 and 7 installed. BTW, now it is also possible to have
multiple versions of IE on the same desktop! (I have 3, 4, 5, 5.5 and
6.) You can get them at http://www.skyzyx.com/archives/000094.php Be
prepared though that the new design he's working on has a few bugs.

Why not use NoteTab to edit your page! Open the HTML file, make
corrections, save and refresh the page to view the changes.

Hi folks!
I use NoteTab Light 4.95 and am experiencing a glitch when converting
text documents to HTML.
(I participate in forums that discuss news and current events, and use
NoteTab for html formatting when cutting and pasting news articles and
posting to the forums.)
Anyway, depending on from where I cut the original text, NoteTab may
or may not convert special characters (such as double quote marks) to
html. The glitch that occurs is that when it coverts a left double
quote to #147, it'll also convert the right-hand closing double quote
to rsquo. Since the #147 appears to render properly when I post my
messages, but the rsquo doesn't convert back at all, I have to use
NoteTab's replace function to substitute #148 for every occurrence of
rsquo. While this is simple enough to do, it is an extra step that
really should be unnecessary.

Can anybody help me with this annoyance?
It really IS aggravating.
Thank you in advance.

First of all, you shouldn't post messages with typographical quotes
("smart quotes" or "curly quotes"), since they aren't standard ASCII and
can't be relied upon to be correctly decoded by everybody. Use straight
quotes instead.

Secondly, #147 and #148 (and any numeric entities in the #128-#159
range, by the way) are undefined in the HTML spec, so they shouldn't be
used at all -- they may work in Windows, but not in other platforms. The
character entities rsquo and lsquo ARE defined, but unfortunately (as
you noticed) some softwares still don't recognize them. The
most-compatible way to insert those characters is to use the numeric
entities as defined in the HTML spec -- #8216 and #8217, in this case.

As for the conversion problem, it's a (known) Notetab bug which
supposedly will be fixed in Notetab 5.0. The way I deal with it is
using a clip script that "fixes" the wrong characters right after
invoking the convert-to-HTML function -- replacing rdquo for rsquo,
rsquo for acute, and so forth.
