Hi everyone,

NoteTab Pro 5.0 beta #2 is now available for download. As before, there
are two packaged versions of this beta release. One with the
spell-checker dictionary and thesaurus, and the other smaller one
without these files:

NoteTab Pro 5.0 beta with dictionaries (size: 3,747 KB)
http://www.fookes.com/ftp/beta/NotePro5_Beta2_Setup.exe

NoteTab Pro 5.0 beta NO dictionaries (size: 2,535 KB)
http://www.fookes.com/ftp/beta/NotePro5_NdBeta2_Setup.exe

If you have already installed the first public beta, I recommend that
you uninstall it before running the Setup program. This ensures that you
will have all the latest files copied to your NoteTab 5 program folder.

This update fixes the following issues found since the previous release:

* The Utilities.clb and SampleCode.clb have been updated to correct some
minor errors.

* Fixed an issue under Windows XP64 that produced document tabs without
captions.

* Question dialog boxes now beep if option allows sound (under XP, the
Question sound isn't assigned - go figure).

* Fixed issue with garbage text in display when very long lines are
scrolled horizontally.

* Regex pattern errors are now displayed as meaningful messages.

* ^$StrSort has been modified to do case sorting just like the Sort
command available through the NoteTab menu.

* Improved the ^$GetDocMatchAll and ^$GetReSubStrings$ Clip functions,
which now use the delimiter defined by ^!SetListDelimiter. As a result,
results can now be reliably assigned to an array variable.

* Added a new Clip function: ^$GetLibraryFileName$
Returns the fully qualified filename of the current Clipbook library.
Can be used with ^$GetLibraryPath(^$GetLibraryFileName$)$ to extract the
corresponding path name.

* Updated Help files. Added the Regex.chm Help file with detailed
information about the PCRE syntax. Replaces the Regex.txt file available
in the previous release.

Please send us feedback if you encounter any issues. If all goes well,
we hope to release the final version before July 26. Thanks for testing!

Hi,

Question, will this be an upgrade from 4.95 Notebook Pro or will we need to
repurchase the program?

Thanks,

Paul

My main question (which doubles as a suggestion for the marketing of the
new version) is:

What are the major new features? Meaning, what is there to entice an
existing user to upgrade?

I found two new ones, but they might not even be the most important ones
for some users:

- New regexp engine -- apparently more powerful and closer to the syntax
used in Perl. I didn't test it yet, but I'm hoping that it will be also
faster and able to process larger find & replace requests.

- Support for working under a "limited user" account -- that is, it no
longer needs to have writing rights to the Notetab program folder.

That's besides some old known bugs that have been fixed...

Regarding the new regexp engine, two things I would like to see in the
final version:

1. Besides the full documentation about the new engine, a shorter
document highlighting the DIFFERENCES in syntax from the old engine to
the new.
2. I didn't check if it's even needed, but, if there's stuff in the old
regexp syntax that would have a different meaning in the new engine,
some sort of help converting clips would be very nice -- a conversion
guide at least, maybe a converter feature (implemented as a clip?) if
feasible.

I second that !

How about sending out a list of the "New Features" .
I am by no means a power user, but I would like to know more.

Here's from the latest Whatsnew.txt file...

Changes in Version 5.0
=======================

* Added full support for running NoteTab under multi-user and network
environments.
* Can be run reliably from a user "Limited Account".
* Improved user-interface appearance under Windows XP.
* Improved memory usage and processing speed.
* Improved conversion between HTML and plain-text format.
* Added new print engine with Print Preview tool.
* NoteTab Pro now supports line lengths up to a theoretical limit of 2 GB.
* Improved Undo feature in NoteTab Pro.
* Improved opening files through the Windows Shell and Send To feature.
* Replaced regex engine with a powerful new one that is based on PCRE
(Perl 5 compatible).
* All core libraries have been rewritten for improved reliability and
compatibility.
* Added support for IntelliComplete Server (www.flashpeak.com).
* Improved "Go to Hyperlink" function to support opening email addresses.
* Removed redundant info box with Replace dialog when no more
occurrences found.
* Dot at start of filename is no longer treated as extension delimiter.
* Fixed issue opening documents with very long fully qualified filenames
through Windows Explorer.
* Fixed issue with folder being locked (can't rename or delete) after
NoteTab opens a file from it.
* Fixed issue opening HTML documents in Firefox.
* Registered version succesfully tested under Wine.
* Many other minor improvements and bug fixes.
* Revised license pricing.
* Updated documentation.

Clip-code additions and improvements:
-------------------------------------

New predefined Clip variable:
^%DOLLAR% = Dollar character ($)

^$GetDocMatchAll("Pattern"[;SubPatternId])$
Finds all matching strings based on the supplied regex pattern.
Optionally specify a subpattern value between 1 and 65536. Use the
^!SetListDelimiter command to define how matches are separated in the
resulting string.
Example that collects all URLs in a Web page:
^!Set %NewVariable%=^$GetDocMatchAll("(?s)<a.+?href\s*?=\s*?"(.*?)"";1)$

^$GetReSubStrings$
The above function is best used together with ^!SetArray. It extracts
all Substrings from a regex search after using ^!Find. Use the
^!SetListDelimiter command to define how matches are separated in the
resulting string. Example:
^!SetArray %Array%=^$GetReSubStrings$

^$IsOnline$
Returns True if NoteTab detects a connection to the Internet.

^$GetDataPath$
Returns the folder where NoteTab stores user settings and data.

^$GetLibraryFileName$
Returns the fully qualified filename of the current Clipbook library.

^$GetLibraryUserPath$
Returns the folder where NoteTab stores user-modified libraries.

^$GetLibraryPath(LibraryName)$
Added support for optional parameter that causes the function to return
the location of the specified library. The following example returns the
location of the current library:
^$GetLibraryPath(^$GetLibraryName$)$

^$IsNumber(Value)$ improved to support negative and decimal values.

^!Find and ^!Replace improved to support selection of regex subpatterns.

Syntax Changes from Previous Regex Engine
-----------------------------------------
There are significant differences compared to the previous regex syntax
used in earlier versions of NoteTab. The most notable ones are listed below:

\n for newline (hex 0A); before it was hex 0D 0A. Replace \n with \r\n
\l and \p - no longer used

Tagged Matches:
Replace { } with ( )

Replace tokens:
& no longer used; replace with $0
\1 to \9 meaning changed; replace with $1 to $9

First I get an error that says "regex error: nothing to repeat" then
it says the line above is the problem
It worked in beta 1.
I think I remember there was something said about new meaningful error
messages.

I might as well metion another strange behavior in both betas.
The clicp wizard field that produces a file open dialog apears to be
waiting for an event and then it jumps to the forground. Unfortunately
when the open file dialog has to also use a login box to get where it
is going (Such as webpage or a server location) then as soon as the
login occurs (clicking OK to login box) the clip wizard box jumps
infront of the open file dialog. Slightly confusing for the people I
will be programing for.

First of all...awesome product!!! I have been reviewing the NoteTab
documentation and am thinking of purchasing.

Second, I was looking through NoteTab Pro v5.0 beta 2 and I don't see
where I will be able to create custom syntax highlighting.

Did I miss it? Can you give information on where the custom syntax
highlighting is and how to use it? I am hoping to be able to set up
the custom syntax highlighting to indicate what text should be
considered as ASP code, PHP code, etc...etc.

What would be REALLY COOL is if the custom syntax highlighting could
be a different color from the HTML syntax highlighting. Perhaps color
categorized by code type (e.g. Blue is HTML, Purple for ASP, Pink for
PHP, etc..etc)

Thanks :)

Hello Group,

Does HTML support a non-breaking hyphen? If so, where is it in NTPro 4.95?

I can find non-breaking space, apostrophe, ampersand and special characters in
the HTML clipbook, but I don't find a hyphen which is non-breakable. I want
to use it in telephone numbers such as "908-555-1234". Depending on what size
text a user sets in his browser, that phone number could end up on two lines.
How do I keep the number intact?

Thank for the help.

hiyawathen,

NoteTab 5.0 does not support custom syntax highlighting. To implement it
requires a new input control. That would have required a lot more work
and further delayed NoteTab 5.0. As it is, the private beta testing
group has been working on it since the beginning of April, just to help
Eric get it to where it is now. As I understand it, changing the input
control is such a big project, we might not get it for a long time.

As a work around, for PHP, I built a clip to send PHP code to the
php.exe and then to a browser, to see the syntax highlighting. This
really helps with spotting typos, etc. Something similar could be done
with other languages with this feature. The clip I built was with
NoteTab 4.95, I will have to test and make sure it still works with 5.0.
I will post back to the list once I have tested, and post a fix, if any.

I realize this is a hack, but NoteTab is the best editor if you have to
use Windows. It also works well in Linux using Wine or very well with a
Windows emulator.

Here is the link to my NoteTab page, and the link to my PHP syntax
highlighting clip.

You could use CSS to keep the phone number intact. How you would best
implement it depends on your html:

white-space: nowrap;

Something is not working right with my clip in NoteTab 5. I have not
had a reason to use it until now, as I am doing more with Word Press
and Joomla, and thus fewer pages from scratch.

I need to better pinpoint the issue and see if I can change my clip
code before we call it a bug. Eric also fixed how NoteTab works with
Firefox and Mozilla browsers, to eliminate problems. So my work around
for that should be obsolete.

I'm going out of town next week, but I will see if I can finagle the
time to figure this out later this afternoon or tonight.

Thanks for the info Gary. I'll see what I can do. I'm not sure that I
understand the beginning of your regex pattern though. Have you tried

^!Replace "<\!--

Hi, Thanks,
Yes I did try lots of syntax for html comments but the only one that
works in RegEx in clips is the way I have it in my example.
I put this an other observations in a post on the CLIPS list called.
"Notes On Regular Expressions In version 5 beta-G.O."

Their is an RTF file in the files with more notes on the RegEx help.
That syntax <\!-- does work in RegEx find dialogs though.

Your customizable HTML editor save our but at work when we had to drop
FrontPage to become NYS-ADA compliant. Thanks.

Hi everyone,

I am pleased to announce that the final versions of NoteTab Pro 5.0 and
NoteTab Std 5.0 have now been released! NoteTab 4.x customers will find
upgrade information on the following page:

http://www.notetab.com/upgrade.php

The NoteTab Web site also offers trial versions of both NoteTab Pro 5.0
and NoteTab Std 5.0. Due to lack of time, NoteTab Light 5.0 isn't
available yet and probably won't be released until September 2006.

Thanks to all for your patience!

Cool. I'm confused though. The upgrade page refers to a
"News and Updates" dialog, but no such dialog exists in
version 4.9x. Is the idea to download the 5.0 trial, and
then purchase it through the "News and Updates" there?
Are there any differences between the trial version and
the version you get if you just buy the package outright?

Thanks,

Scott

I bought the upgrade right away and installed it over 4.95 (after
making a backup). Installation was *flawless*.

I also noticed that going to the discount page doesn't show the
discount until after completing the form and going to the next page.
(Just in case anyone gets confused.)

THANKS ERIC!

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the long awaited upgrade. I bought NoteTab Pro (called Super
NoteTab at that time, if I remember correctly) so long ago, through a
vendor in Poland, that I don't remember where my license key is and what
it is :)

To support your work I am going to buy two new licenses, one for the PC
and the other for the laptop. I read the license (one of the very few I
did read ;) ) and it seems to require two licenses for two machines
anyway. :)

Thanks again.

Thanks! I was confused. In fact I still am. I see they talk about VAT but
it isn't clear if they will add it to the price. Has anyone from EU bought
the upgrade yet? Did they add VAT? I don't like VAT, me.

Larry, thanks for the insight, I tweaked your example clip to work
with a generic syntax highlighter. The clip grabs selected text from
document and asks for language type and then builds a php file via
text appending notetab function which is then opened in an url off the
root of my apache service. The text is colorized based on the
language selected during clip wizard inquiry. Works pretty slick!
Let me know if you would like more info.

Thanks

hiawathen,

I am glad I could help.

I am always interested in new tips & tricks with NoteTab or any other
program.

Sorry for the delay in a reply, I just got back home after a week long
trip and very limited web access.

Hi All,

My IE, IE shell browsers, Firefox, and maybe more seem to have
lost all the html background colors. I looked in Internet Options
to see if I used some sort of "Use my CSS" feature, but couldn't
find anything. One page I checked looked correct in Mozilla.
Anybody know where I can check to normal up?

Take care,

Not sure what you mean. Is it the background color of the browser itself
(what you see when no page is loaded or no background color is specified
for the page? Is it a certain page or certain pages? All pages?

If it's the browser's own background color it's at Internet Options ->
General tab -> Colors button in IE.

Have you, by any chance, changed from a CRT monitor to an LCD flat screen?
When I made that change soft background colours disappeared.
Googling told me that many LCD monitors just have less colours, so soft
greys, for instance, simply don't show.
I changed back.

Thanks for the reply! No, it is not the browser GUI colors, but
colors like inside table backgrounds, actual page backgrounds,
and even background images. Also, the page sizes are not seeing
the tags to make them a certain size as in the width. Take for
instance http://www.fookes.com/products.php. The only color I
see on it it the Fookes Software banner image and the gold color
for the Info and price buttons (which are images) also. I do not
see the blue background behind those image buttons, nor the blue
left border, nor the pea green stripe at the top that says
Commercial Software, nor the dark blue stripes background image
at the top right, nor the light blue dotted background image on
the right below the striped, nor the colors at the bottom.

Two Mozilla family browsers do not show those and IE/plus all
shells I have tested (Avant/NetCaptor). NetScape 7.2 does not
display them, nor Firefox, but plain Mozilla (Mozilla 1.7.5
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5)
Gecko/20041217) is the only one that displays the colors I
mentioned on that page. This started happening a week or two ago
and I may have installed a program or M$ update that caused it. I
cannot think of anything I have changed to cause it.

I hate to have to reload something like WinXP Media Center 2005
and all the upgrades since SP2 again to fix the problem and then
if it is a setting (which I sort of doubt since it is an all, but
one browser thing) that it not fix it. Thanks for reading it all
and any help you have to offer.

Happy HTML'n!

Yes, I do have a flat screen LCD monitor on my laptop, but the
background colors have been working fine in it. I know that for
sure. Something has changed and it's not the web pages. They are
sites I visit frequently like my own and Fookes Software.

Jody,

Strange that it both happens in Mozilla-browsers and in IE.

For IE you can check whether "Ignore colors" in the
Accessibility-section of the Internet options is causing this. If I turn
this on I get what you describe.

Sounds as if your display driver has migrated from the specific one
needed to a generic substitute.

Try reinstalling the Drivers. (Or The defaults in your browser, are you
getting OTHER graphics ok? changed PRINTERS?)

Hi Hugo, Dave, Jeff, Lotta, Others...

>Strange that it both happens in Mozilla-browsers and in IE.

What was even stranger is Mozilla browser displayed fine, but not
2 versions of NetScape and Firefox. Go figure...

>For IE you can check whether "Ignore colors" in the
>Accessibility-section of the Internet options is causing this. If
>I turn this on I get what you describe.

I tried checking it and un-checking, but no help. The only thing
I remember changing and have since went to the Windows default
was my Themes. But none of that help. The Media Center 2005 XP
has some nest themes and I was running Aquarium and now switched
to Space (after seeing if the Windows XP default would fix
things). Anyway, Jeff, while I was looking for setting on my Dell
Laptop for my display card, I clicked on Accessibility just for
grins, because I did not see any display card listed in a quick
glance. Well, on the Display tab in the Accessibility window, I
unchecked "Use High Contrast" which I do not remember checking,
but I think something else changed it, ie, a program, one of the
themes, etc. That fixed it, even the sizing problem. Weird! All
my browsers display properly now. Thanks for your all
suggestions, because they all pointed me in a direction to find
the setting. (I had to click on my Space theme again and Apply
again, but my browser colors still look good.

I did upgrade my Skype recently which I need to downgrade,
because it wants to connect to the Internet and I cannot find
where to turn it off in any of the places to check like in
Startup, the program itself, Run in RegEdit, etc.

Happy HTML'n!
