Regarding the layout, why do you have to use absolute pixel positions? Why not
let
each receiver of the images as laid out on their computer see a relative
display?

Hi Bill,

I can confirm that it doesn't work full screen on a 17" monitor at
1280x1024, you end up with the right picture in the middle of the title. The
absolute positions almost guarantee this. Can you use a table to position
the pictures and the title so they will keep their relative positions on
different sized screens.

Best wishes

Bob

Thanks Bob:
I had it in a table ... I was hoping that the <DIV> tag would give
me a
wee bit more control over exact position .... arrrg .. I have
trouble with tables it seems that you cannot get them just exactly
positioned like the professional sites ... do ...

Hi,

Could some kind hearted guru advise about setting inserting of a
standard visitor's (index) counter in an html page. From what I've found
out, a cgi-bin folder with an .exe program need to be there to work. If
so are there ready made programs I could use? Same for feedback/enquiry
forms that generate an auto response to the submitter and email the
contents to the host?

Thanks in advance

Here is the URL for count.pl by Matt Wright probably if this Url
is old
you can search on Matt Wright and find it you have to be fairly
knowledgeable with Unix to use cgi scripts and where your website
is located and how they support cgi scripts is also important ...

http://www.worldwidemart.com/scripts/

There is also the option of free counters out there on someone
elses
website .... they usually get some of your traffic somehow ...

http://hitometer.netscape.com this is a free on by netscape ...

hope that helps a little ..

Hello Bill,

The links on the left are still distorted and it still has to be

Hello! I just posted this on the basic notetab list, and Jody referred
me to this one.

I am having problems with links in a page not accepting a change.
There are no problems with the script, the page does not need to be
reloaded or refreshed, but for some reason, it needs to be renamed in
order to work. I explain this in more detail below, and if you want to
see for yourself, go to
http://www.whitewatervoyages.com/planning/planning.html and look at
the script, comparing it to what happens when you click on "Directions
to your rendezvous point."

I had a page called
http://www.whitewatervoyages.com/directions/directions.html. It had a
link to
http://www.whitewatervoyages.com/caitlin/cherryrendezvous.html. I
changed that page's name (and folder) to
http://www.whitewatervoyages.com/directions/cherryrendezvous.html.
After replacing the link in directions.html (I put the whole link in
the script, reading
http://www.whitewatervoyages.com/directions/cherryrendezvous.html
instead of something like cherryrendezvous.html; actually I tried
both and neither worked), refreshing and reloading several times on
the server, directions.html would still only accept the old link,
sending the browser to
www.whitewatervoyages.com/caitlin/cherryrendezvous.html, even though
it no longer existed and was written up in the html text to go to
directions/cherryrendezvous.html and the appropriate page had been
moved to the appropriate folder.

When I renamed directions.html to directionsindex.html, the link to
cherryrendezvous.html worked. In other words, technically in the
script of the page, everything was correct to support the new link,
but for some reason directions.html had to be renamed and recognized
as an entirely new page to accept the link. It was no problem to
change directions.html to directionsindex.html, but a link to
directions.html also existed in a page called planning/planning.html,
and this time, planning.html would not change the link directions.html
to directionsindex.html. I suspect that this is the exact same problem
since I went through the same comprehensive procedures as above, but
there is no way I can change the name of planning.html as I would have
to rework the entire site which is huge!

In summary, there are no errors in the html script. The server does
not need to be refreshed or reloaded. For some reason, the page has
to be renamed in order to accept the changed link. I don't understand
why!

                  Thank you!
                  Caitlin

Hello Caitlin,

If I understand what you're saying I may see a problem.

If you are clicking on the link that says "Directions to your
rendezvous point."
and you want the link to go to this page,

http://www.whitewatervoyages.com/caitlin/cherryrendezvous.html

then you need to change the html code in the file- planning.html
-to reflect the above link. As it is on the site now that link
still refers to -

http://www.whitewatervoyages.com/directions/directions.html

There may be something I'm not understanding but that looks like
a minor problem.

The "cherryrendezvous.html" was only an example to illustrate what I
think is a repeat problem. The problem is that on the page
http://www.whitewatervoyages.com/planning/planning.html, the link for
"Directions to Your Rendezvous Point" should go to
http://www.whitewatervoyages.com/directions/directionsindex.html when
it currently goes to ../directions/directions.html. I suspect that it
is a cache problem of some kind, because, as illustrated in my
example, the page WILL work if the name is changed. Does that make
sense?

Thanks!

Caitlin,

I think I have found the problem.

Using Notetab on the page you are speaking of, do a search on this
../directions/directions.html

I believe this code should be ../directions/directionsindex.html

You did change the link in the column on the left, but not in the main white
area.

Hello,

The page "planning.html" has 2 links that appear to have the same
destination, that is
"http://www.whitewatervoyages.com/directions/directionsindex.html".

The left column link, the one in small print, in the file
"planning.html" for "Directions to Your Rendezvous Point" is
correct and works as one would expect, at least it takes you to a
link
"http://www.whitewatervoyages.com/directions/directionsindex.html".

The second link, the right column link, which I assume should go
to the same link as above is still in error. It is still
directing the browser to
"http://www.whitewatervoyages.com/directions/directions.html".

The second link is in the form - <a
href="../directions/directions.html">Directions to Your
Rendezvous Point</a></li>. This is the link that stands out
because of the larger print in the right column.

Don't feel too bad, I have been struggling since yesterday with a file that
refused to DOWNLOAD from my site. Your problem, and Davids answer, got my

Thanks for having your problem, and fixing mine.

Of course I do know that. ;-)
On the site you can see in my sign-off there's a free tracker you can
register for at http://www.extreme-dm.com/tracking/?reg and if you have a
webserver up and running, you can download all sorts of free trackers you can
use in your cgi-bin directory. You can see one active on my personal site at
http://dierhulp.nb.nu/~wpp/.
You name it: it's out there on the web. ;-)

I am looking for a counter that will keep track of how many people
DOWNLOAD a particular file from my site.

I HAVE a counter that keeps track of visitors to my site. I am offering
a FREE file to download and want to know if anyone is taking it.

Go to www.comnett.net/~phil and then go to the second page ( there is a
link about 3/4 of the way down the first page. The offer is near the
bottom
on the second page.

I downloaded it myself, so I know one fool downloaded it.

The simple way, although perfect is have a counter on a page with
the download. On your description page put something like
Download here. Direct that to the page containing the counter
and the download link. You are not guaranteed they downloaded
it, but most likely they will if they have gone that far.

If your server supports the <accounter> tag you can do it like this:

<counter files=filename.exe>"
You can have this hidden too as there is lots of<counter> options.

You can also use it like:

<counter
file=http://www.system.com/yourdirectory/anotherdirectory/yourfile.extention>

I hope this helps.

Hi James,

You might check at Cut 'n Paste Javascript or somewhere else that
has ready made scripts.

Assuming you're checking your counter by some means other than visiting the page
with the counter on it:

Now:
DL link -> file

Change to:
DL link -> HTML page with meta-refresh link to -> file

Put counter on the meta-refreshing page. No extra scripting necessary.

I don't know any means to check the counter on my page except to go
to the page and look. It is a Netscape Counter, and they send me a
monthly report, but that is all I know how to use.

he following clip create a cookie with 3 values which can be individually
returned with an index value i: getCookieValue(i) ;see example html
The cookie expires in a years time

H=cookieCreator
;place cursor in script block
^!SetListDelimiter ,
^!setArray %expireDate%=^$GetDate(yyyy,mm,dd,hh,mm,ss)$
^!inc %expireDate1%
^!dec %expireDate2%
^!set %name%=^?{name=test}
^!set %i%=^$StrSize(^%name%)$
^!inc:%i%
function setCookie()
{
var cookieName = "^%name%";
var cookieValue0  = escape("^?{value0=this}");
var cookieValue1  = escape("^?{value1=that}");
var cookieValue2  = escape("^?{value2=those}");
/*Expires set to a years time*/
var expires = new Date(^%expireDate%)
var  mix = ""
mix += cookieName
mix += "="
mix += cookieValue0
mix += "|"
mix += cookieValue1
mix += "|"
mix += cookieValue2
mix += "; expires = "
mix += expires.toGMTString()
document.cookie = mix
}
;

function getCookieValue(i)
{
var values = unescape(document.cookie);
values = values.substr(^%i%,document.cookie.length)
arrValue = values.split("|")
return arrValue[i];
}
;*******clip end*******

Place cursor in html script block and run clip

results example of How to use in html ; Tis just an example of how to set
and retrieve cookie values
and not a realworld example as you would most likely set
cookieValue0,cookieValue1 etc; with a forms input controls.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<script type="text/javascript">
function setCookie()
{
var cookieName = "test";
var cookieValue0  = escape("this");
var cookieValue1  = escape("that");
var cookieValue2  = escape("those");
/*Expires set to a years time*/
var expires = new Date(2001,7,01,10,48,42)
var  mix = ""
mix += cookieName
mix += "="
mix += cookieValue0
mix += "|"
mix += cookieValue1
mix += "|"
mix += cookieValue2
mix += "; expires = "
mix += expires.toGMTString()
document.cookie = mix
}

function getCookieValue(i)
{
var values = unescape(document.cookie);
values = values.substr(5,document.cookie.length)
arrValue = values.split("|")
return arrValue[i];
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
<form>
<input type="button" value="set" onclick="setCookie()" />
<input type="button" value="get0" onclick="alert(getCookieValue(0))" />
<input type="button" value="get1" onclick="alert(getCookieValue(1))" />
<input type="button" value="get2" onclick="alert(getCookieValue(2))" />
</form>
</body>
</html>

Hope this helps.
