I should have checked with support, it seems that version 4.95 is not
supported in Vista perhaps. So I will try my XP computer and see if it
works properly there.

Axel, it's only the so called illegal range that's unique to the
windows codepage. The rest, as the superscript characters at hand, are not.

>If Bob can make the server send the correct HTTP headers, that's best.

Trial and error works pretty well too. ;-)

Do they let you use .htaccess but they don't let you use it to
declare the character encoding? That sounds strange and unusual indeed.

So he will with an iso latin charset.

I'll be quiet now. This doesn't lead anywhere and has very little to
do with Bob's question. Again, I'm sorry for this bickering. It
really wasn't my intention but that's how it turned out. I just
wanted Bob to get an answer to his question.

I have been building xtml pages, however, now when I click on the clip !New Web
Page and select HTML 4.01 Transitional I get "XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd" how do I change it to
build an HTML 4.01 transitional web page.

I do not have the right address for the clips group. I sent this to
ntb-clips@yahoogroups and was told no such group exists. sent the correct
address for the clips group.

Go to View/Options/HTML Files and UNcheck the box titled "Create XHTML

Thanks,
That did the trick, it works like it supposed to do. Now when I start a new

Hi Edward,

I am sorry that you found my web garbled and that I had quoted the wrong

updated the site. Please let me know if you are still having trouble.

Every browser I know offers the option of "use my colurs, ignore
backgrounds", which is what I will invariably switch on, as it makes at
least 80 % of all sites much more legible. Unfortunately it ruins your
drop downs. BTW I am not the only one who considers drop downs on sites
a rather senseless gimmick.

Trying to reply to that question I hit what looks like a serious bug in
the program. I have just filed the following report to support on the
website:

Dear Sirs,

I use my own modified clips and my own modified clipbar. While the
former are always tinkered with, I have not touched the latter for quite
some time. I just noticed a very serious bug:
When I right-click on a clipbar icon and choose "button properties" the
whole computer freezes totally. Not even <Ctrl><Alt><Del> do anything
anymore. Obviously this does not help in trying to get to the bottom of
the problem.
What I have done is install one of the sample clipbars that came with
the last update and try the same right-click there -- with identical
results.

If you can't replicate the problem, I could zip the whole folder, upload
it, and send you the link. Or just tell me which (.ini) files you need.

The version is 5.7 pro and the OS is Win98SE. All libraries and settings
reside inside the NoteTab program folder.

That doesn't surprise me a bit. I expect it's something obscure not
fully tested in W98. My problem is, I have no idea when I last modified
my bar and with which version. Or wait, I do know: The file date is
2008-08-27. And I know its nothing to do with my bar, the default bars
show the same problem.
As I said, that's as far as I've got with this.

Ed, from my Help file and it's been years since I had to worry about this:

"Options | Internet

This tab is not displayed if the "Show HTML Features" has been unchecked!

Main Browser: Leave this field blank if you want NoteTab to use your
default browser. If you want to use Internet Explorer, entering
"IExplore" (without the quotes) should be enough. If it doesn't start
the browser, you can click on the Browse button [...] to find the
browser program file. To launch Opera, enter "Opera"; to launch
Mozilla, enter "Mozilla"; to launch.Netscape 4.x (or older), enter
Netscape; to launch Netscape 6.x, enter "Netscp6". You can customize
the way a browser is launched by editing the Browsers.dat file. You
can force a browser to launch in a maximized state by putting a "+"
character in front of the browser criteria (e.g., +IExplore)..."

I think this problem is in the path for the choosing the browser. The
browser by itself works great. When I select it I get this error message
"This application has failed to start because iertutil.dll was not found.
Since I do not get that error when I select IE I believe this is trying to
select my browser from the C: . That drive is corrupted and I know use the
E: drive. I just need to tell it to select the IE browser on the E: drive.

Ed,

The, more or less, default way to choose which browsers are used is by
editing the
file 'browsers.dat' in NoteTab's main folder. If you examine that file
you can see the
method used. If you need more entries than are already in the file just
copy and paste
multiple entries into browsers.dat, edit the name in the brackets and
the appropriate
paths in each sections and most browsers can be used with 'F8' and
Shift+F8, that is,
'View in browser' and 'Other browsers'.

As of now I have six browsers to choose from, had 7 before I uninstalled
the 'Chrome' browser.

hsavage,
Strange I did not have browsers.dat. I must have inadvertently deleted it. I
downloaded Light and copied the browser.dat into this program. I am not
familar with all the terms. I wonder if someone could explain the lines in
the following browser.dat.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
-------------------------------------------------------
[ie]
Command=iexplore.exe -nohome
UseDDE=1
Application=IExplore
DdeCommand=
DdeExec="%1",,%2,0,,,,
Topic=WWW_OpenURL
Application_New=
DdeExec_New=
Topic_New=

[Opera9]
;Add full path to Opera.exe file name below if you have several versions of
the browser
Command=Opera.exe
UseDDE=1
Application=Opera
DdeCommand=Opera.exe /nowin /e

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
-------------------------------------------------------w
I may not need to know the details but what to the following items mean
under the IE or "Browser".
`nohome >line 1
DdeCommand=  >line 4
DdeExec="%1",,%2,0,,,,  >line 5

[Opera9] >evidently is to open the browser Opera version 9
;Add full path to Opera.exe file name below if you have several versions of
the browser >Line 1 under [Opera9] I only have 1 version of Opera and
FireFox and I keep them up todate with all the latest updates.
Command=Opera.exe >line 2 evidently executes the opening of the Opera
browser
UseDDE=1 >line 3 why the =1 here and in IE
DdeCommand=Opera.exe /nowin /e  >line 5 what does the "/nowin' perform? and
also the " /e"

No where do I see a complete full path to Opera.
I would like to add FireFox also, and see the code that I would have to use
including the direct path to FireFox.exe
which I think would look something like this in my case E: is what I use on
this computer, on the other two computers I use the Light version and C: E:
Program Files\Notetab Pro\Notetab.exe. I do not see that in the above code
of browser.dat, so how does the program find "browser" IE, and in my case
"Other Browser" I see no direct path to those two browsers. Once I
understand that I can then add my other browsers.

Ed,

Previously I said I have six browsers to use, but had 7 before I
uninstalled the 'Chrome' browser. Make that 8 browsers because I also
uninstalled 'Safari'.

Below is an entry for 'Opera' in 'browsers.dat', numbers added for clarity.

  1. [OPERA]
  2. Command="C:\I-Net\Opera\Opera.Exe"
  3. UseDDE=0
  4. Application="C:\I-Net\Opera\Opera.Exe"
  5. DdeCommand=0
  6. DdeExec="%1",,%2,0,,,,
  7. Topic=WWW_OpenURL
  8. Application_New=
  9. DdeExec_New=

It makes no difference what you '[name]' the entry as long as you use
that name when referencing that browser when using 'F8' and 'Shift+F8'.

All my 'browsers.dat' entries are identical except for lines 1, 2, 4,
and they all work correctly. You will have to locate the executables
and furnish the paths for the dat file.

You should be able to do that using the 'Find File' function with
'Windows Explorer' or other file manager.

About the questions at the top, the 'command line parameter' -nohome, I
think prevents 'IE' from opening to a pre-selected 'homepage'. The
'DdeCommand=0' and 'DdeExec=whatever' have to do with 'Dynamic Data
Exchange' of which I'm not sure it is. Mine all work set as above.

One last question, we have tabs 'F8' and 'shift+F8, that gets us our Browser
and the Other Browser, if we have 3 or more browsers how do we choose the
one we want using shift+F8?

Ed,

You can either go into 'View > Options > Internet' and switch them
manually or use a clip similar to the one I wrote that will give access
to all the entries you want that are in 'browsers.dat.'

Since this is about browsers and using a clip is necessary it should be
OK to include it here. You'll have to edit the entries in the '^!Set
%browser%=' line to coincide with the entry names in you dat file.

Any questions about the clip please respond on the 'clips list'.

Thank you and your clip works great. I did have to unwrap the long line, but
with just a little knowledge I was able to do so easily.

Hi everyone,
This is the Browser.dat that I have on my computer. IE is corrupted and will
not work but when I select "Browser" or "Other Browser: Avant automatically
opens and displays the html page. How is that possible. Is it because that I
use Avant as my default browser. I have since download Maxthon2 which I really
like for the little time that I have been using it. It may become my default
soon. I also have FireFox 3. I was having and am now problem with getting
Opera to run as my Other Browser as it cannot be found by the computer as when I
select it Avant comes up, while before I downloaded Avant a box came up that
said Opera cannot be found on this computer.

Ed,

For your first problem, if IE can't be started the logical thing for the
OS to do is to
start the default browser. I'm pretty sure that's your trouble.

If the software is having that much trouble finding the browsers you
should probably verify the path to each browser.

Try using the modified browsers.dat above, verify the paths are correct,
if so, the browsers should start.

I have my desktop working to a degree Notebook Pro when either of the "Browser"
or the "Other Browser" are clicked on, the browser designated as the default
browser opens. I will work on that later, as I am at my Notebook every time I
click on either "Browser or Other Browser" I, get the error message that IE
(Browser) or Opera (Other Browser) as follows:
"Windows can not find C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" or for
Other Browser just put Opera\opera.exe. in the place of the two ie locations.

Below is a copy of the browser.dat that has been taken from NoteTab Pro. What is
telling Windows to look into the C:\ to try and find these two applications?

There are two partitions on this laptop, one is C: it is no longer the main
drive, it once was but it became so corrupted that I had to reinstall from my
reinstall disks, when asked if I want to save the data on the C:\ and I said
yes, so it created partition containing the old drive and created a new E:\
which is the operating drive. For one year now E drive has functioned as the
"main drive" but I can go into the C: partition and run applications but it
requires using Windows Explorer to get into it. I have removed most applications
from it and transferred them to the E:.
