Lee,

I always uninstall Wine before installing the new version. This has
prevented some odd issues I had in the past. Then I do
wineprefixcreate. Occasionally there are some error messages for the
programmers, but everything seems to work well.

Uninstalling Wine is not the same a deleting the .wine directory.

*nix OSes separate the user data from the program, so all the
directories under the user's home directory are not touched when a
program is removed. I still had a directory for a program I had not
installed when I wiped out my root partition and did a clean install.
When I then installed the program, it remembered all my settings.

The only time I had to re-do my .wine directory was when I tried some
fancier options in Wine and it screwed things up. That's why I backup
the .wine directory if I want to play with different settings in Wine.

I always keep the last good version of Wine. I download the package
and then install it. Of course, I use Slackware 99% of the time. I am
sure there is a way to manually install a .deb package instead of the
auto update way.

I suggest that you uninstall Wine and then re-install it, then go to
the command prompt and run wineprefixcreate.

If that does not work, then look into locating and installing the
previous version.

Yes, on Ubuntu (I believe that's what you said you had), go to System -->
Administration --> Synaptic package Manager. Then, go down to Wine. Then, in the
menu at the top, go to "Package --> "Force Version...". There it will give you
the option to go back to the last version.

Lee,

That's good to know.

I still suggest uninstalling to make sure all the loose ends are

That seemed to work. I did a complete removal, a restart (I had strange errors
when I reinstalled and ran wineprefixcreate w/o the restart), then ran
wineprefixcreate. All "seems" to work fine now.

It's interesting what you said about Linux separating the data. I learned years
ago to do that on a Windows system - one partition/disk for os, the other for
data/software. That has saved me many times. (The "techs" tell me I'm crazy).

Thanks for all the useful info. 0.9.56 was not available under the
"Force" option so I'd have to remember how to do it from my saved copy
via CLI.

I completely removed and reinstalled 0.9.57, did the wineprefixcreate
thing, restarted and the problem remained. However, I discovered that
it is not specific to NoteTab! Same thing happens with PhotoShop at
about the same consistency. I'll post the bug over there and that
should get some action.

The way *nix directory structure works, it you put the
root partition on one drive and the home partition on
another drive, you can install/re-install various
distributions and never lose your settings.

Of course, pay attention so you do not accidentally
overwrite your home directory. It's best to make a
backup.

I always backup /home before I do an install. I just
do a clean install as it is faster and avoids cruft.

The ellips character is, typographically speaking, one character
consisting of three dots. It is not typeset as three separate dots.

If it's done properly, that is :-;

That is probably the reason that you get odd results if you copy and
paste to an application that doesn't recognise the character(code).

Yes, that's true, but it also happens with several other characters, e.g.,
commas, apostrophes, line feeds, carriage returns etc.

NoteTab worked OK with 0.9.4 but Photoshop did not. I had the .deb for
0.9.55, copied it to my desktop and double clicked to install. I *may*
try to reinstall 0.9.57 or I might just wait until the next version
comes out. I hate to think that wine might be broken from now on.

BTW, I posted on the PS AppDB and Dan said no one else had reported the
problem. So likely it is something locally that's fubaring it.

I got to thinking about your description of "empty frames". I was
wondering is you have changed the default settings in winecfg on the
Graphics tab.

I have the best results using the default. When I tried modifying
settings I had to rebuild my .wine directory. I think that running
wineprefix create would have fixed it, but I did not know about the
command at the time.

I have four check boxes on this screen, and the 2nd and 4th are
checked by default.

The four check boxes are labelled:

"Allow DirectX apps to stop the mouse leaving their window"

"Allow the window manager to control the windows"

"Emulate a virtual desktop"

"Allow Pixel Shader (if supported by hardware)"

Have you changed which items are marked on the graphics tab of winecfg?

I appreciate your thoughts. I haven't opened winecfg in a long time.
Just running everything on the default settings - Win 2000. The
graphics settings are as you describe.

Since I downgraded, everything is working OK. Tomorrow, I may try the
upgrade again with a fresh download. If it fails, I'll just roll back
again.

Monday, I finally upgraded to Gutsy. It went pretty smoothly - only
had to run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" to sort out
screen resolution.

I'm still in the process of downloading upgrades and updates so things
haven't totally settled in yet but I like to post a preliminary
report . . .

One of the upgrades was to wine-0.9.57. I'm still having the 'empty
frame' issue but it doesn't seem quite as bad as before. However, the
number of random junk characters when copying and pasting has
increased. The usually appear at the end of the copied file and can
be just about anything - letters, symbols, you name it. These are not
the conversion codes like "\u2019" which appear in predictable places.

I'm not doing enough coding for it to be a big problem for me but it
is definitely some sort of bug. :(

Once the dust settles here, I'll know better what the real damages in
Wine are.

Wine 0.9.58 was released today.

It is not yet available as a Slackware package, so I cannot test it.

There are a lot of Richedit fixes. This will affect NoteTab Light and
Standard, hopefully for the better.

There are also a lot of bug fixes, see this link for details:
http://winehq.org/?announce=0.9.58. I am not sure what all the
shorthand means, but perhaps it will help some odd issues.

I'll update once I can download.

The dlls in this script is the same as manually
replacing them.

I looked over what this script does, and it just
automates items that can be done manually.

Ever since I downgraded to 0.9.4 I can't run clips. I have had to use NTP in
VirtualBox, it's the only way I can use it now.

Well, hopefully one day ...

Just found out I can run clips in 0.9.4 but I had to reload the .clb and .ctb
files from Windows. Strange ...

The upgrade just spits out too much garbage at the end of the line many times
when I cut and paste.

I just added 5 new posts to a web page and the end-of-line garbage only
happened once. The 'empty frame' thing still happens but not as often.
Since I'm not doing a lot these days, I can live with the quirks.

I'm going to be putting together a new Linux-only box probably in May
after Hardy is released. It will be interesting to see what happens on
a clean install.

OFF TOPIC . . . Can we talk hardware? I am going to recycle the two
250GB SATA drives, USRobotics modem, CD/DVD-RW and NIC from my current
box. So I'll need a case (really liking this one -
http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=94002), motherboard
(since my current ASUS needed replacement TWICE, I'll probably go
Intel), processor (Intel), video card (nVidia) and memory. I'm think
I'll do RAID 0 for backup. Any suggestions?

I think a clean install will be a big help.

Hardware is not my strong suit. I have not yet built
my own system from scratch. Someday....

Howdy all . . .

Lot's of news here. Put together a new box last week. Here are the
specs:

Antec NSK4480 Black Mid Tower Case
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Socket 775 Motherboard
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6750 - BX80557E6750 - Box CPU - Socket LGA775
EVGA 8400GS Video Card (PCI-Express, 512MB)
KINGSTON DDR2 2GB PC5300 DUAL (667 MHz)

And from the old box:

2 - 250GB WD Sata drives
Pioneer DVD_RW DVR-112D
USRobotics 5610C modem

Didn't even reinstall Ubuntu. Just popped the hard drive in and it
recognized everything pretty well (new graphics card needed a little
fiddling). Of course the XP partition is DOA. I'm going to delete it
and do something else with that space.

I'm having a lot of fun with Compiz and rotating desktop cubes etc. :)

Anyhoo . . . finally got around to updating Wine to wine-0.9.59. Up
top on the application bar there was only an option to close, no icons
to minimize or maximize. These options were also grayed out on right
click. There was also no presence on the panel to show that it had
loaded and so unable to maximize or minimize from there. This makes it
totally unusable. Photoshop did not have this glitch.

Part of the problem might be Compiz but I have a suspicion that it is
related to the 'empty frame' thing that has been happening for some
time.

Anybody else given wine-0.9.59 a spin?

Sister

Sorry, I had not checked WineHQ.org in about two weeks.

I see the the Slackware package is available, which it had not been as
of a couple days ago.

I do not have time to test before going to work. Hopefully tonight.

I also saw a NoteTab Off Topic posting on the same issue.

My Ubuntu box does not have the oomph to run Compiz, so I can see if
it works better for me on that box too.

Hopefully, I can get to this tonight after work.
