OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are a wizard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After some unsuccessful attempts at getting this to work, I decided to
start from scratch - new wineconf, new NTB install. Then I switched
out the Win98 dlls, made the wineconf changes you suggested and VIOLA!
I can't tell you how grateful I am for your efforts in sleuthing this
down. I'm off to post the fix to the LUG list right now.
Me soooo happy to have NoteTab back again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad to help. If this can help NoteTab in any way, then I am glad.

Yeah!
Larry Hamilton
I did a search on my Win2K system and was only able to find two of those
DLLs
riched20.dll
riched32.dll
NoteTab Light 4.95 and NoteTab Std 5.3/fv both work well on this system. Is
there another DLL used in Win2K or are these the only ones required? Is it
possible that I can get NoteTab to work on my Debian system using these DLLs
or should I get out my old Win98SE CD and go looking for the previously
mentioned DLLs? If necessary I can swap out the hard drive on one of my
Linux systems and install Win98SE on it for long enough to locate and
extract the DLLs.
Sister has been griping about this for weeks and my first unsuccessful
attempt to get NoteTab running in Wine was over a year ago on a new-spiffy
PCLinuxOS system. I'm flabbergasted to find the problem essentially solved
two days after I learned that this group existed (when sister mentioned it
on another list). Wow sister, I'm going to rename you "Sister Tenacious"
because you really hang in there and keep searching until you find an
answer.
I'm normally that way myself but I really didn't believe there would be an
easy answer to this one so I'd pretty much given up on it. I'm glad I had
enough optimism left to join this group.
Too cool!

Don,
Both Win2k and WinXP only have these two dlls.
I tried using the WinXP dlls and it did not work.
I just got the Win2K dlls onto my Linux system.
Setting NoteTab Light to be in a Win2K environment,
and setting these two dlls to be native, then builtin,
made NoteTab Light work. I did not test everything, but
drag & drop, Search & Replace, and find worked, so the
rest should too.
Wine is better at mimicking Win98 and Win2K than XP or newer.
So it makes sense that this combination worked. Re-testing may work
with the XP dlls. I'll have to try that later.
Using this configuration, I did not get any errors in my
bash window. It is recommended by WineHQ to run apps from the
command line to see what errors are generated. With Win98, I get
a few errors.
I just started this list late Friday night. Sisterscape has been a
long-time user of NoteTab and has posted to the NoteTab lists for
years. I've used NoteTab for over 9.5 years, and been a beta tester
almost as long. I guess I did something right, since I got my name
in the acknowledgments of the help file. ;-) I'm a big fan of NoteTab,
and promote it all I can. It saves me tons of time at work and play on
the computer.
I like to help people and solve puzzles. I use Pro, and it does not
need this workaround, so I did not dig into this until now. I kept
thinking about this problem and could not let it go until I had a
working solution.
I'll be preparing a FAQ of our successes and failures, etc. and place
in the files section of the group.
If you run into any issues, please let us know, with specifics.

According to the Web site, "GIMPshop is a modification of the free/open source
GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), intended to replicate the feel of Adobe
Photoshop. Its primary purpose is to make users of Photoshop feel comfortable
using GIMP.
It shares all GIMP's advantages, including the long feature list and
customisability, while addressing some common criticisms regarding the program's
interface: GIMPshop modifies the menu structure to closely match Photoshop's,
adjusts the program's terminology to match Adobe's, and, in the Windows version,
uses a plugin called 'Deweirdifier' to combine the application's numerous
windows in a similar manner to the MDI system used by most Windows graphics
packages. While GIMPshop does not support Photoshop plugins, all GIMP's own
plugins, filters, brushes, etc. remain available.
Due to the changes to the interface, many Photoshop tutorials can be followed in
GIMPshop unchanged, and most others can be adapted for GIMPshop users with
minimal effort."
BTW, where are you reading the errors from? I'm launching program in Wine using
menu shortcuts.

Sisterscape,
WineHQ.org has the AppDB (Application Database) that lists what
applications work in Wine, and what steps are required, if any, to get
a Windows app to install/run. From my experience, almost all Windows
apps will install without problems.
To find a Windows program in the AppDB, go to WineHQ.org, click the
AppDB Link in the top left of the page, then enter the program name in
the search box.
Here is the page for Photoshop:
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=17
One version of Photoshop is gold, meaning it installs and runs and all
critical features work. Another version is labeled garbage. At least,
from this page, you can see what others have done.
There are other sites that have tips on getting some programs to work
in Wine. One that is linked to from the AppsDB page is
http://frankscorner.org/. He does have information on a couple of
versions of Photoshop.
Since Photoshop is not a Fookes product, it is off topic for this
list. (Also, I do not have Photoshop, so can offer no further
assistance.) I will add an entry to the future FAQ on how to find
programs in the WineHQ AppDB.

Lee,
WineHQ.org recommends that programs be launched from the command
prompt so that error messages are displayed.
For example, in my testing of NoteTab Light, is used this command:
wine ~/.wine/drive_c/NoteTabLight/NoteTab.exe
(The tilde, ~, is short hand for the currently signed in user's home
directory, so in my case it is shorthand for /home/larry.)
You can also use a Windows style command:
wine "C:\NoteTabLight\NoteTab.exe"
Or using double backslashes if no quotes. Quotes are required if a
space in a directory or filename.
wine C:\\NoteTabLight\\NoteTab.exe
This launches NoteTab and keeps the command prompt active. You can
then see the errors, if any. This is how we knew the culprit was that
the richedit dlls are not implemented in Wine.
Are you still having issues with the top and bottom of the edit
window? I have not had this at the top, only at the bottom. I am using
NoteTab Pro on Wine 0.9.44 in Slackware Linux 12.0. What is your
configuration? The latest Wine is 0.9.45.
I usually run my NoteTab Pro from a shortcut too. I just typed in the
command line and no errors appeared. It may require running the wine
debugger to get any error output. I have never done that, so will have
to figure it out. I suspect this is a quirk of a nature requiring a
WineHQ developer to address.

Lee,
Thanks for a good report!
The rich edit dlls will have no effect on NoteTab Pro, since Pro's
input control does not use rich edit. This is why it is critical to
know what version of NoteTab is involved.
The one thing that jumps out at me is that you have Wine 0.9.41. The
current version of Wine is 0.9.45. What I have noticed over the years,
is that the improvements to Wine from one version to the next make
NoteTab Pro work better.
I just discovered that Slackware's main package site has Wine 0.9.45,
so I uninstalled 0.9.44, and installed 0.9.45.
I am not able to make the cursor thing happen. I have had it on
0.9.44, but not all the time. I do not recall ever having it at the top.
I suggest that you upgrade Wine to the latest version. WineHQ
recommends that you uninstall the prior version. I always keep the
prior version that I know worked well, so I can easily go back.
Again, I get nothing in the shell when starting Pro from the command
line. Do you get any errors? If not, we'll have to dig into the wine
debugger to see if it can tell us anything.
Let us know if Wine 0.9.44 improves things for you.
I may not be able to dig into this for a few days, maybe not until the
weekend.

GimpShop has the Mac look (bright blue scrollbars) that I really,
really don't like. Their website isn't very good either so it doesn't
inspire confidence.
In the meantime, there has been a resolution on the Photoshop front . .
.
I re-enabled my nVidia driver and that fixed the GLX stuff. I had
turned it off because it screwed up the hibernation process. I found a
fix for that which involved editing a line in the
/etc/default/acpi-support file and adding a line under nVidia device in
xorg.conf
But Photoshop still wouldn't load! It was freezing at the splash
screen!!
After spending all afternoon looking, I finally found the fix for this
bug too.
Just keep hitting enter and it will eventually load. Turning off
"Let your window manager control your windows" in winecfg Graphics also
helps a bit. I hope that they get it fixed soon.
The last winecfg change runs counter to the settings that Larry advised
for NoteTab so this off topic post is tenuously related to NoteTab and
Wine after all!!

Sisterscape,
I think I can let this slide.
I did not want to make this an all-purpose Wine
support list.
I guess, if we can keep it focused, and come up with
something that helps out one of us in need, and it is
not a product in direct competition with a Fookes
product, it should be OK. I own the list, but don't
want to be an iron-handed dictator. That never ends
well.
I don't get paid by Eric, I just want to help get the

The more business that goes Eric's way, the more he
can work on the programs I use, especially NoteTab.

This is a clip I developed to open the active NoteTab document in the

F8 to launch in browser give an error that the protocol (c) is undefined.
I am sure that installing the Windows version of Firefox will give all
of the Windows functionality, but why install Firefox for Windows,
when the Linux version is already there? ;-)
Under View > Options Internet Tab, I set the main browser to
"z:\usr\bin\firefox", w/o the quotes. I just browsed, and set the file
type to all files.
I have not yet refined this clip to handle filenames with spaces. I
developed this clip on NoteTab Pro. I have not tested on
Light/Standard, so YMMV. If you try to launch a file name with spaces,
it tries to open each word in the filename as its own document, and
finds some interesting things online, or plenty of 404s. :-O
If you really want to give up Windows, this should help. ;-)

I was on the Options screen for NoteTab, View > Options. I clicked the
Help button and Wine offered to install the Gekko engine. I clicked ok
to install it.
Under the Help menu, Help Topics does not display, but
Help on Clip Programming and Help on REguler Expressions display.
The Contents tab works to display the information in the HTML style
help, i.e. the CHM file. However, the Index, Search, and Favorites
tabs do not work.
I do not have any Linux CHM software installed, such as xchm, or
gnochm, etc.
I launched NoteTab Pro from the command line, to see what errors were
generated. There were plenty of lines with "fixme:shdocvw:..." and
"fixme:mshtml:...". Perhaps the dlls for these functions will make a
difference. NOTE: WineHQ points out that there are some dlls that must
not use the Native dlls, but Wine's builtins. I won't re-create the
list in this message.
I wanted to be sure and write up this finding while it was fresh on my
mind.
Here is the info on my system, I built a clip to hold this
information. I included the commands that can be used to gather this
information.:
Hardware:
Processor: i686 Celeron (Coppermine) GenuineIntel (uname -a) 1GHz
RAM: 256 MB
Operating System:
Linux: Slackware 12, kernel 2.6.21.5-smp (uname -r or uname -a)
Desktop: XFCE desktop 4.4.1
Variety: NoteTab Pro
Version: 5.41 (Help > About)
Wine:
Version: 0.9.45 (wine --version)
Package: wine-0.9.45-i486-1kjz.tgz (Linuxpackages.net)
If no one else beats me to it, I will see about building a clip to
gather this information on the fly and save having to update a static
clip manually.
Larry Hamilton
That seems like a real roundabout way to do this task.
All I did was enter /usr/X11R6/bin/firefox in the Internet/Main Browser
field. That launchs the open document in (Linux) Firefox from the icon
in the toolbar. Or am I missing something?
But even at that, I don't often launch web files that way because PHP
files need to be opened via local host.
Since I don't do filenames with spaces, that won't be an issue for me.
NoteTab is working smoothly here. Haven't run across a glitch yet.

|
|
|
|
|
|
| I may not be able to dig into this for a few days, maybe not until the
| weekend.

O.K., so I upgraded to Wine 0.9.45. Everything is the same, except I now get the
following error messages (of which I have no idea what they mean):
fixme:actctx:parse_depend_manifests Could not find dependent assembly
L"Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls"
fixme:ntdll:find_reg_tz_info Can't find matching timezone information in the
registry for bias 300, std (d/m/y): 4/11/2007, dlt (d/m/y): 11/03/2007
Could the cursor problem be with the screen on my laptop?

Lee,
I am not running Linux on a laptop, so it is possible that it is
something with X or the display or the driver.
I am not sure what the errors mean, other than the one about the
timezone.
Is there anything via Google about issues with your model of laptop on
Linux? I have read that the Ubuntu forums are really good for this
sort of thing.
Does anybody else have any ideas?

NoteTab is working pretty well - everything seems to be functional
except for the Help files. Here are two minor annoyances that I
discovered just now:
1. The library tabs are still requiring the cursor to slide off. Just
clicking won't hold the pane in place. I thought I remember this being
fixed but it seems to have regressed. (Or I'm getting senile and
forgetful and imagining things.)
2. Cutting/deleting text causes portions of nearby text to "disappear"
in unpredictable patterns and it also produces gibberish at times. It
doesn't seem to matter which method is used - keyboard, right click
etc. Scrolling the affected area out of the window frame resets the
text and it reappears. This could be more than an annoyance during
complicated editing procedures.
One other question - not really a bug. I created an icon and linked to
it in the Quick Launch bar. However there is no icon associated with
the open window "tab" on the panel. How can I replace the standard file
icon with the NTB icon?
Cheers . . .

I have this on both NoteTab Light and Pro. I think it used to work
right on a much older version of Wine. I will see if I still have that
version and try it and see.

Is there any specific steps to reproduce this? Can you get a
screenshot? (If you are not sure how to do so in Linux, I will gather
the steps to do it. I think Gimp offers a fairly easy way, but there
is also a CLI tool ImageMagic, that makes this fairly easy. I have to
look up the steps from a tutorial that made it quite clear.)

I assume you mean the Gnome Quick Launch bar? I have a NoteTab icon or
two that I can upload to the files area. You can place the icons
anywhere on your system and use the browse buttons to get to them. I
forget which temp directory ends up catching all the icons from an
install. I believe that is where I happened to find mine. I'm not
running Gnome, so I do not have the ability to refer back to refresh
my memory.

I found a gnome configuration file for launching NoteTab, and opened
in a text editor and it had the icon path:
Icon=/home/larry/.kde/share/applnk/Wine/NoteTab Pro.xpm
If you have KDE you will have something like this.
The xpm extension indicates a Linux icon. You can also use other graphics.
I have a few graphics I will zip up and put in the files area of the list.

Wine has gotten a lot better about ready HTML style help, *.chm files.
However, there are still shortcomings.
There are three programs that are Linux programs for viewing CHM
files, xchm, knochm, and gnochm.
I had gnochm working from a clip to open NoteTab's CHM files, but that
was over a year ago.
I need to get one of these chm readers working, so I can comment on
how it will work.
If Wine cannot display the help file, then one of these options will
be required.
Installing Internet Explorer and the Windows CHM setup may make this
work better in Wine.
I have not researched this for awhile, so there may be better options now.

Yup. See link below.

Nope.
This screenie should make things clearer:
http://www.eartherdesigns.com/ss/text.gif
You can see how the text is garbled. All I did to have that happen was
delete/cut a paragraph.
You can also see that I have the quick launch icon happening already.
What I'd like is an icon for the open window bar. Both are outlined in
red.
Happy sleuthing!
PS. Screenshot processed with Photoshop in Wine. I'm sooo happpy!!!

Yes, I have used the Ubuntu forums quite a bit. They're great, and quite
extensive. I did find one problem, it was with a driver, but I replaced it and
it didn't change anything. Oh well, eventually.

I've never even driven a laptop so won't be of much help with your
issues, I'm afraid. Sorry . . .

I just looked at WineHQ.org and see that Wine 0.9.46 has been released.
The first item in the list of changes is:
"A variety of fixes to improve Photoshop CS2 support."
I think somebody on this list had an interest in this. ;-)
I have not yet had time to try this version with NoteTab.
I did manage to load Debian Etch to dual-boot on my other WinXP Home PC.
I ran across this link on linux.com:
http://www.howtoforge.com/debian_windows_installer
This How To references http://goodbye-microsoft.com/,
The one caution I would have on this, is when it asks about partition
size, do not read too fast like I did. ;-)
I thought the partition size was for the empty space at the end of the
disk. It is actually the size for the Windows partition. Thankfully,
my mis-reading was not smaller than the actual size of my WinXP
install & data. Whew!
In an hour and 50 minutes I had a working dual-boot configuration.
Since Ubuntu is Debian based, I figured this would help me to
duplicate issues.
I was disappointed to find that the version of Wine available by
default is 0.9.25! I know I can fiddle with repositories, or get the
Debian package from WineHQ.org. This version of Wine would not even
start NoteTab Light. I did not use any Window's dlls, since it did not
even run.
Lee-
I will see if I can duplicate the NoteTab Pro issue of the cursor at
the top & bottom, once I get Wine 0.9.46 installed.
I hope I can get to this Saturday or Sunday.

Synaptic found the Wine update this morning (I have added the
repository to the sources list) but I thought I'd hold off updating for
a bit. Have you given it a spin yet?

I may get to it tonight. If not, tomorrow night.
