Wine 1.1.14 was released Friday, January 27, 2009.

The package for Slackware was finally available today.

This update was announced with a lot of improvements, but none appear
to have an impact on the main issues we are concerned about.

The Wine project has a new page that lists all the programs that
mention that they support Wine.

So far it is a short list.

http://wiki.winehq.org/AppsThatSupportWine

Eric - At one point I know that the NoteTab's Help File and website
and possibly the Readme mentioned Wine support. I know that one
version of the trial version did not like Wine, but last I tried the
trial it worked in Wine. Before I pursue anything with the Wine team,
I wanted your OK.

Hi Larry,

Yes, the latest documentation and the NoteTab Website mention Wine
compatibility. The current trial versions should also run fine under Wine.

You have my permission to have NoteTab listed on the Wine site. Many
thanks for your help!

Wine 1.1.15 was released yesterday, and the Slackware package was
available today.

The release notes mention more richedit fixes, which should help Light
and Standard users.

However, the same basic issues of apparent cursor position, tab
switching via keyboard flashes, and losing the minimize button after
minimize and re-focus....

Oh well, they are making lots of improvements all the time, so
eventually, they'll get to these issues.

You know Larry, the funny thing is, I have now gotten used to it. I use NoteTab
Pro on a Windows computer sometimes for work and I find myself allowing for the
strange cursor movements. It would take me a bit of time to get used to it the
old way now.  ;->

I don't have the minimize button problem, though.

It could be that I need to update to Slackware 12.2, I am at 12.1. Sometimes
being on the latest version of one's Linux distro helps too.

I do not minimize often when I use Linux, since I can easily Alt+Tab, or have a
different desktop for different tasks. I only minimize to test this issue. I
have not tried the latest Wine on my Ubuntu box, I'll have to find the time to
fire it up.

I suppose this could be a distro specific issue, or some piece of a distro.

Since the main issues are cosmetic, most users can live with them. Since the
other bigger issues were cleaned up a while back, there has been a lot less
traffic on the list.

I will keep checking to see if the issues reported on the list are ever
resolved, but they are all things that I know are there and can live with them.

There may be some other NoteTab specific issues that will only be gotchas for
those that do a lot with custom clips. Some day I may have enough time with all
the other things I have committed myself to, to identify them all. ;-)

Wine 1.1.16 was released on Friday, February 27. The Slackware package

The same usual issues apply, but it runs just fine.

There were a slew more Richedit fixes so users of Light and Standard
should notice some improvements. I have only checked Pro.

Subject: Wine 1.1.18 Released (Long)
lm_hamilton
Send Email Send Email

Wine 1.1.18 was released on Friday, and the Slackware package became available
today. Wine 1.1.17 was released two weeks ago, but no formal Slackaware package
was made, so I could not test that version of Wine.

1.) The same annoyance type issues exist. Loss of minimize button after minimize
and restore (Delphi issue as per Eric); apparent cursor position (Pro only);
click and move cursor to select library from library bar; flashing of tabs when
CTRL+TAB or CRL+SHIFT+TAB but not when click a tab.

2.) NoteTab 5.8 was also released, so I updated to that and still the same Wine
issues.

3.) I have an issue where NoteTab Standard will not download the latest update
on Wine, it is fine on Windows. If any of you have Standard, let me know if you
get a message asking about a download manager and no download. I have never used
a download manager, and do not know if they exist for Linux and don't care. ;-)

I will also need to know your version of NoteTab Standard, version of Wine, and
Linux distribution and version. This information can be gathered easily with the
clip in the Files area of this Yahoo Group. NOTE: Both Pro and Light download
the update fine, ONLY Standard has this issue. I had this same issue with
Standard 5.7.

4.) I tried something new with Pro and the issue of the apparent cursor
position. I like seeing the Nonprinting text, VIEW > Nonprinting text
(Shift+F12). I realized that since that is not the "out of the box"
configuration, that turning it off might help us learn something. I did not find
a difference in behavior with it on or off. There is a difference from before,
pressing enter for me at the bottom of a full Notetab page/screen adds a new
line, but the apparent position of the cursor moves up. Previously it stayed
put. As before typing enters text on the correct line and not where the cursor's
visual representation is. Since I went to 5.8 of Pro AFTER going to Wine 1.1.18
from 1.1.16, I do not know which program contains the change in behavior,
although I feel it must be Wine.

5.) Eric mentioned on the NoteTab Basic list that he is working on a new flavor
of NoteTab that will have a lot of features people have been asking for for a
long time. We'll have to wait until Eric gives us more information.

As always, let us know if you find any new issues if you update to the latest
NoteTab or Wine, with specifics of how to reproduce and platform and versions.

NoteTab jumped to version 6.0 after several beta testing iterations.

This is a free update to 5x users.

The big change it support of display of UTF-8 and other related changes.

This should fix the issue of copying webpages into NoteTab and getting weird
characters that have been reported on this list.

There is still beta testing going on to polish some rough edges. This release
will get it out to lots of users and help identify all the issues the beta group
has not found.

The beta versions work in Wine, I have not yet updated to 6.0.

Please share any issues you fine.

Thanks for the info, Larry. I downloaded it but it installed into a different
directory. I didn't want to copy over files I already have set-up. Do you know
if it will work if I just copy the new NotePro.exe file into the old 5.x
directory?

BTW, when I copied some text from a page, I still got some of the "weird"
characters. The one specific thing that I see is that, many times, " and ' are
not converted. Also, the cursor problem is still there. (Running Ubuntu 7.10)

Oh well, I have become so used to it now, I don't even seem to notice it.

Kudos for the free upgrade! A great product and a great company!

Yes, it will work, you will not have the new sample clip library and other
updated files, but it will work as expected.

If you have a URL of a page to illustrate the example, that will help Eric
address that issue.

Eric does a good job. Thankfully, this change was easier to implement that he
thought.

I'm aware of the new samples but what do you mean by "other updated files"? Will
I be missing out new features? I'm just trying to make this as easy as possible.
I have a lot of clip files and have made changes to many others, in addition to

possible. I have a lot of clip files and have made changes to many others, in

Things like the What's new, readme, and the sample clip library. The help files
have not bee updated yet. There is nothing you will be missing, as far as
functionality, if you copy the exe and the updated sample clip library.

I goofed when I was updating my Slackware 12.1 to 12.2 and it would not boot.

I set aside plenty of time, but must have done something wrong, or it was just
time for the gremlins to play.

I found some helpful information and was able to get at my Linux partitions, but
nothing I tried would make it boot.

I ran out of time & patience, so I pulled out my Hardy Heron boot CD and
installed over my Slackware / partition.

Since my CD is Hardy, it had a lot of updates to pull, but still less than a
full boot CD for Jaunty.

I've got it back up and running, as you can see from this post.

I still have to run down a few programs and plan to upgrade to Hardy.

Wine 1.1.21 runs well, with the normal issues.

Only complaint about Ubuntu, is that it is not as easy on this 7-1/2 year old PC
as is Slackware.

I'll switch back to Slackware once I have time to do a clean install, but that
will probably be awhile.

By running Ubuntu on my main PC, which most others seem to run, I should be able
to identify the issues others have. I'm getting different messages in the
command window when launching NoteTab Pro from the prompt than I got in
Slackware. On Slackware I used XFCE for the window manager, instead of Gnome.
That may be part of the difference in messages. I'll just have to see.

Hope all is well. With the long weekend coming up, I may not have time to spend
at the computer, so until next time, have a great day!

I think most likely so. (at least some) but how much, I do not know. And,
how Ubuntu runs which version of the X server (versus Slackware). Also user
versus kernel space things in the two different O.S.

I suspect that XFCE leans towards "more generic" IOW less of its own
specific customizations (less of disturbance/impact to sys, X, kernel, user
space, things outside of XFCE) (I speak of the "hook" kind here) hooks into
sys things, affects how (XFCE) interacts with the X server and others.

A Gnome package for Slackware typically modifies near/upwards of 12 of the
official (KDE equipped Slackware whether or not KDE happens to be installed
is not relevant) Slackware packages.

According to Gnome, "this is how it is done."

According to KDE, "this is how it is done."

each of those 2 are different, how they hook into the sys, kernel, user
space, how they hook up with X server.

Alan.

The upside is that you will be more in sync with our observations. Obviously
there won't be any from me as I'm still on wine-1.0. If it works . . .

Yes, it was a tiring weekend. I think I finally have all my usual software in
place.

Having the apt repository available made for an interesting read, and a few new
packages to play with. It's too easy to waste time looking over all the goodies
that are available.

I have a PC with Ubuntu, but I only fire it up on occasion, so it will be much
more handy this way.

Hopefully we can make more progress this way.

FYI - This came through all the other NoteTab lists today. The first update to
NoteTab 6 was released today.

I am know that the beta versions of 6.1 work as they should on Wine.

The only problems I have had with updating on Wine, and not just with 6x, is
that the auto update will think it is using a download manager and not finish.
The workaround is to download the update to a Windows PC and copy it over, not
too hard if you dual boot, have a network, or a USB drive.

I just got back from a long weekend out of town in the wee hours, so have not
yet installed the new 6.1. There is also a new release of Wine, released Friday,
that I will report back on later.

NOTE: The NoteTab 6.x install will create a new 6.0 directory structure, unless
you install it over 5x. DO NOT install it over 4x, as is also the case with 5x.

<Announcement Follows>

Hi everyone,

We're pleased to announce the release of NoteTab 6.1 (all versions).
NoteTab Light is free as usual, and the retail versions are free for
registered users of version 5 and 6.

You'll find the update link in NoteTab's "Check for Updates" feature,
which is available from the Help menu. If you don't see the version 6.1
info in the News and Updates window, click on the "Get headlines" button
at the top-left of the screen to refresh the list.

http://www.fookes.com/get_free.php?nts

Improvements since version 6.0:
-------------------------------

* When opening files, NoteTab can now automatically detect in most cases
the appropriate code page to display Unicode and UTF-8 documents.

* When saving Web files (those listed in Options), NoteTab automatically
uses the appropriate encoding based on the defined charset value.

* Added the Code Page submenu to the Tab-bar shortcut menu. This feature
lets you reload a document using a different code page. Useful in cases
when NoteTab doesn't automatically select the most appropriate code page.

* Improved Search Disk feature. It now correctly handles Unicode and
UTF-8 files, as well as files with non-Windows line breaks. During
find/replace operations, the searched file is loaded into memory and
temporarily converted to ANSI with Windows line breaks (CRLF). If a
replace operation has modified the data, NoteTab converts it back to its
original format before saving it to disk.

* Updated Export dialog box with UTF-8 and Unicode options.

* Added new "Format-Search Limit" setting on Advanced tab in Options
dialog box. See NoteTab Help for details.

* Included a new Clip-based Clip writing aid, "Clipcode Syntax"
(courtesy Sheri Pierce). See the Clip Help file for details.

* The "UTF-8 (no conversion)" code page option has been fixed and a new
"System Code Page" option added in the File Open dialog box.

* Fixed some issues with double-byte text and the rich-edit controls.

* Updated Help, documentation, and data files.

* Some other minor improvements and issues fixed.

* Clip-code additions:

^$GetCodePage$
Returns the default Windows ANSI Code page.

^$GetDocCodePage$
Returns the Code page of the active document.

^$GetDocCodePage(Index)$
Returns the Code page of the specified document.

Wine 1.1.23 was released yesterday and the Ubuntu package is available this
morning.

Still the same usual issues.

I will submit the fixme logs from starting the various versions from the
commandline. Hopefully, that will see some action.

Wine 1.1.24 was released on Friday, July 3.

The Ubuntu package is now ready.

It has the same issues as usual, that we have gotten used to and can live with.

I have not tried it on Linux with Wine for a while. I am the one who
tested all the Fookes products and reported back to Eric that they all
work on Linux with Wine. I am one of the regular beta testers, and
Fooke's software are one of the few programs keeping my foot in the
Windows world on my personal computers.

To make sure, I just now downloaded and installed EZThumbs to my Ubuntu
Jaunty system and it runs just like one expects it to and correctly
created a test thumbnail.

All Fookes Software runs on Linux and Mac with Wine, or CodeWeavers
fee-based version, which has a Mac port. Parallels should also work, as
should using VM (Virtual Machine) software.

The EZThumbs download page,
http://www.fookes.com/downloads.php?product=ezthumbs, also mentions that
it is supported on Linux and Mac via Wine.

I suggest trying the Mac version of Wine, since it is free, and see if
that will meet your needs without a dual-boot option. I also believe
that many of the free VM products run well on Wine. This would allow you
to install your version of Windows to a Virtual computer that you would
run just like any other program on your Mac, and avoid the dual-boot
scenario. If you have a license to an unused copy of Windows, running it
in a virtual environment is the one way it will run without any
unexpected issues, although it will use the most disk space and use the
more resources than using it via Wine.

I moderate the NoteTab on Linux list on YahooGroups,
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ntb-linux/. We mostly discuss
NoteTab, but the list is for any Fookes software. We mostly focus on
Wine, but also discuss other means of running Windows programs on other
operating systems. I believe we have a few users who have Macs. I have
not worked with a Mac since the early 90's, when I used a friends. I
hope to get one someday, but they are outside the price I can justify to
my wife right now. ;-)

I know that we would like to get input from users of all non-Windows
operating systems and how Fookes Software works for you. We want to help
Eric expand his product base so he can continue to update all the
software so many of us use everyday.

Please let us know how things work out, so we all know.

I am CC'ing this to the ntb-linux list.

Wine 1.1.26 was released Friday, July 17, and the Ubuntu package was available
on the 18th.

I updated my version of Wine and still the usual minor issues.

I started NTP from a bash script from bash. I got some messages that were not
just the usual ones. There were lots of fixes in Wine (none that helps the minor
issues with NoteTab), so something is happening that did not before. It does not
appear to affect how NoteTab functions in Wine.

Hopefully this will get addressed fairly soon. We have had these same issues for
over a year.

One way to get attention to the issues is to go to Winehq.org and sign up for
the AppDB and leave votes on the bugs. The more votes, the more likely they are
to fix it.

The other way, is for the independently wealthy among us to put up a bounty for
a bug.
