Wine 1.1.23 was released yesterday and the Ubuntu package is available this
morning.

Still the same usual issues.

I will submit the fixme logs from starting the various versions from the
commandline. Hopefully, that will see some action.

I have not tried it on Linux with Wine for a while. I am the one who
tested all the Fookes products and reported back to Eric that they all
work on Linux with Wine. I am one of the regular beta testers, and
Fooke's software are one of the few programs keeping my foot in the
Windows world on my personal computers.

To make sure, I just now downloaded and installed EZThumbs to my Ubuntu
Jaunty system and it runs just like one expects it to and correctly
created a test thumbnail.

All Fookes Software runs on Linux and Mac with Wine, or CodeWeavers
fee-based version, which has a Mac port. Parallels should also work, as
should using VM (Virtual Machine) software.

The EZThumbs download page,
http://www.fookes.com/downloads.php?product=ezthumbs, also mentions that
it is supported on Linux and Mac via Wine.

I suggest trying the Mac version of Wine, since it is free, and see if
that will meet your needs without a dual-boot option. I also believe
that many of the free VM products run well on Wine. This would allow you
to install your version of Windows to a Virtual computer that you would
run just like any other program on your Mac, and avoid the dual-boot
scenario. If you have a license to an unused copy of Windows, running it
in a virtual environment is the one way it will run without any
unexpected issues, although it will use the most disk space and use the
more resources than using it via Wine.

I moderate the NoteTab on Linux list on YahooGroups,
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ntb-linux/. We mostly discuss
NoteTab, but the list is for any Fookes software. We mostly focus on
Wine, but also discuss other means of running Windows programs on other
operating systems. I believe we have a few users who have Macs. I have
not worked with a Mac since the early 90's, when I used a friends. I
hope to get one someday, but they are outside the price I can justify to
my wife right now. ;-)

I know that we would like to get input from users of all non-Windows
operating systems and how Fookes Software works for you. We want to help
Eric expand his product base so he can continue to update all the
software so many of us use everyday.

Please let us know how things work out, so we all know.

I am CC'ing this to the ntb-linux list.

Wine 1.1.26 was released Friday, July 17, and the Ubuntu package was available
on the 18th.

I updated my version of Wine and still the usual minor issues.

I started NTP from a bash script from bash. I got some messages that were not
just the usual ones. There were lots of fixes in Wine (none that helps the minor
issues with NoteTab), so something is happening that did not before. It does not
appear to affect how NoteTab functions in Wine.

Hopefully this will get addressed fairly soon. We have had these same issues for
over a year.

One way to get attention to the issues is to go to Winehq.org and sign up for
the AppDB and leave votes on the bugs. The more votes, the more likely they are
to fix it.

The other way, is for the independently wealthy among us to put up a bounty for
a bug.

  Using NoteTab Pro
I was wondering if anybody else was using NoteTab Pro under Wine and having the
same problem I am. I am running NoteTab Pro v.5.0 and, for the most part, it
works pretty good. However, there is one annoying thing that happens. When the
cursor is at the bottom line, pressing the arrow key down causes the cursor to
move up two lines (to the third line from the bottom). Each successive pressing
of the down arrow causes the cursor to move up one more line. However, when I
then press the up arrow key, the cursor moves down to the next to last line. (It
happens at the top of the screen also, in reverse.) It's a bit annoying when I'm
editing quickly and not watching too close.

Any ideas how to fix this?

This post on the Ubuntu forums is by Lee, one of the members of this group.

I run Ubuntu now (Jaunty) and NoteTab Pro 6.12 and I only have an issue at the
bottom of the screen where the apparent position of the cursor display is not in
sync with where it actually is, after one presses ENTER. If you start typing,
the cursor display moves to the actual cursor position. I also have seen this on
Debian and Slackware.

This is one of the persistent issues that we have reported to the folks at the
Wine project. Earlier versions of Wine did not have it.

This is also one of the issues that prompted me to write the clip for gathering
information about our systems, to get more information for the Wine project.

Signing up for the Wine bug list and voting on bugs highlights them to get more
attention from the Wine developers. See the NoteTab pages in the Wine product
list, they are on the main ntb-linux yahoo page
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ntb-linux, and the bugs are listed at the
bottom of the NoteTab product pages.

There is a product pages for each type of NoteTab: Light, Standard, and Pro.

I suspect that some of the issues we have with NoteTab on Linux are the way
Delphi code interacts with Wine.

I can do most of the things I normally do with NoteTab on Wine, and am so used
to the minor annoyances we have reported, that I just keep working.

HTH,

~ Larry

I use have both of the following and they work fine (I can't remember which one
actually does it):

View --> Options --> Internet --> Main browser/Other browser
firefox %u

And in the same directory as where NoteTab is located, there is a file called
"Browers.dat". In it I have:

[Firefox]
;Command=C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -browser
z:\usr\lib\firefox\firefox %u

Hope it works for you.

MarkH,

Did the suggestions from the others help?

It is possible and NoteTab can either interact with the Linux version of these
programs, or the Windows versions running in Wine.

Depending on which way you are using it, the setup is different. With the
Windows versions, you just set the path as normal in Windows.

I have been away from the PC for a few days, so have not been able to review
this. I only have Linux at home.

If you have any problems, please let us know.

Hi all,

I've only tried Lee's solution - it looks a lot simpler!

Again, I'm using Linux Mint.

Not sure if Lee meant to comment out the word Command=

I'm a novice here, and don't know significance of the %u

With settings below, I've not been able to instantiate Firefox.

But Opera does come up, with error, and doesn't show the page.

I just seem annoyingly close to getting this working.

Just wish I had the money to pay for a wine bounty on our issues, like Google

I took advantage of a computer purchase program at work. Buy up to X dollars
worth of computer, get approval from manager, submit receipt, sign payroll
deduction contract for amount from each check to pay off in 24 months, and get
check to cover the purchase.

I finally got tired of my computer hardware being the limiting factor on using
my DSL. We have DSL at work, and last year, I got a new laptop with 2 GB RAM to
replace the old one with 512 MB RAM. I did not expect a new computer with a
bigger CPU and more RAM to be so much faster when surfing using the same
internet connection.

I bought an ASUS CM Series Desktop, 64-bit with 64-bit Vista & free upgrade to
Win 7, the only reason I own computers with Vista! It is a quad core with 6 GB
RAM, and all kinds of bells and whistles. It is only about $150 more than what I
paid for the seven year old eMachine it will replace. The eMachine has 256 MB
RAM, and all the optimizations with Linux are not overcoming its limitations.
Also a 20 inch flat panel monitor is a treat compared to the 15 inch CRT it
replaces.

I also got an ASUS UX50 notebook. Other than Vista being stupid for getting it
to work with my wireless router, which I changed a setting and my work laptop
will not connect now!, it is great. Once I get my wireless working again, and
copy all her files to it, my wife will be busy with the laptop.

I have heard good things about ASUS, and so far I am impressed with the speed of
these systems. Vista, however, continues to be a frustration. Windows 7 better
be as good as I heard it is.

I also bought a 1.5 TB External USB drive.

I am in the process of using the free, open source program Clonezilla, which is
a Live CD like Norton's ghost, to save each partition and drive from my
eMachine, so I can run them in a virtual machine using Virtual Box to get files
and settings without having to burn a ton of CDs. I have read that since the
emulated hardware is different, that I will have to call Microsoft to activate
it, but I can also just install WinXP to a new Virtual Box Image, so I can get
at the stuff that is Windows only. My Linux partitions should work without any
issues.

On the old PC, I only booted into Windows to apply patches. My wife quit using
that PC.

We also have an old white-box PC that was my dad's old computer, it is newer
than the eMachine, and is WinXP. I plan to make an image of it, wipe it and
re-install a fresh Windows, or maybe install Linux and use VirtualBox to run
Windows.

I had not used VirtualBox until now, and figured out how to use a CD iso image
to run. I also found instructions for installing ReactOS in a VirtualBox image.

ReactOS is a project to re-create the functionality of Windows in its own
stand-alone operating system. React OS works closely with Wine. ReactOS is not
yet ready for prime time as the main OS on a PC, but it is solid enough, that it
can show you what it can do. I downloaded NoteTab Light and installed it into my
ReactOS image. It works ok, but it has some quirks similar to what we have seen
on Wine. I did not try NoteTab Standard or Pro yet.

In ReactOS NoteTab Light won't minimize, and the trick to click on the library
bar and drag to select a library is needed. I did not try everything, but it is
another option to try.

I plan to do a dual-boot option on the new desktop, but want to wait until I get
the Windows 7 CD, since I have read that I may have to install from scratch, and
don't want to have to re-do this whole PC in a few weeks.

With the capabilities of this new PC, I can easily create a VirtualBox virtual
machine running Linux. I also plan to wipe the old eMachine and install Linux
only. That should help its speed. I am considering making it a server.

I just got all this new hardware home about 1:30 PM Saturday, and it's now 1:30
AM Sunday, so things are still a work in progress.

I did not start the Clonezilla process of making images of the old eMachine
until about 10:00. That old PC is only USB 1.0, so it's taking awhile.
Thankfully, the first drive is "only" 20 GB, and the other 80 GB. I copied just
the Windows partition off the first disk, and am now copying the entire disk 1,
so that it will boot as an image in VirtualBox. Once the images are done, I can
use Clonezilla again to write them to the VirtualBox images.

I also have an Epson all in one printer/scanner/FAX that was part of a package
deal with the desktop that I have not even had time to take out of the box. I'm
hoping it works with Linux....

Locations of the programs I have mentioned:

Clonezilla: http://clonezilla.org/

VirtualBox: http://www.virtualbox.org/

ReactOS: http://www.reactos.org/en/index.html

I hope I haven't lost you in my rambling, and that this information is helpful.

How do I go about finding a file/directory beginning with a period, i.e., "."? I
have tried adding ".*" to the File Filters in the Options but it doesn't seem to
work. Any ideas (I'm sure it's simple ...)?

Thanks,
Lee

In Konqueror file manager its in the options/settings

"Show hidden folders/files" yes / no

(default is no)
---

In a terminal, xterm:

(ls -la command)

bash-3.1$ ls -la
total 100
drwx--x--x 18 al users 4096 2009-10-07 13:37 .
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2009-09-30 22:55 ..
-rw------- 1 al users 306 2009-10-07 13:37 .ICEauthority
drwxrwxrwx 3 al users 4096 2009-10-01 23:10 .adobe
-rw------- 1 al users 1867 2009-10-07 02:20 .bash_history
drwxr-xr-x 5 al users 4096 2009-10-02 14:30 .cache
------

If this is Ntab file dialog (using Wine) then it's likely in the wine config
settings

The beginning with . scheme constitutes "hidden" in Linux and AFAIK not
Ntab.

But if Wine keeps 'em hidden then Ntab (likely will not see 'em) takes what
come from upstream

I know how to find them in Linux; it's NoteTab I was looking for, as it doesn't
show in the "open file" box.

default: "0"
Under Unix, files starting with a dot, are considered hidden, and should
not be shown in directory listing (unless explicitly asked for), just
like DOS-style hidden files. If you want them treated as regular files,
set this value to 1.

http://linux.die.net/man/5/wine.conf

The default wine config (in wine.conf file) setting makes dotfiles so
they're like they have the DOS hidden attribute to windows app. Win app
(Notetab) cannot see files that are with the DOS hidden attribute.

The default of zero above in the wine config needs changed to a 1 to let
wine pass them on as see-able instead of as hidden.

Wine no longer has a config file, it was phased out in 2005
<http://wiki.jswindle.com/index.php/Wine_Config_File>. Using the arguments shown
here http://wiki.winehq.org/ChristianDannieStorgaard , I tried the "-d,
--show-dot-files" but it doesn't work. Here is the way that Wine set-up the way
it calls my program:

env WINEPREFIX="/home/lee/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\NoteTab Pro
5\NotePro.exe"

I have tried all these combinations

env WINEPREFIX="/home/lee/.wine" wine -d, --show-dot-files "C:\Program
Files\NoteTab Pro 5\NotePro.exe"
env WINEPREFIX="/home/lee/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\NoteTab Pro
5\NotePro.exe" -d, --show-dot-files
env WINEPREFIX="/home/lee/.wine" -d, --show-dot-files wine "C:\Program
Files\NoteTab Pro 5\NotePro.exe"

but to no avail. Any other ideas?

I haven't used Wine, but a comma between the options looks quite unusual.
Did you try it without?

Alex.
