Wine 1.1.30 was release September 25 and is now available in Ubuntu. Still same
old issues. Display of the library bar at the bottom does not show the library.

I've had it installed about a week, just behind on posting.

Glad to help.

Just wish I had the money to pay for a wine bounty on our issues, like Google
did a year or two ago for some issues for specific apps.

Maybe we could take donations, but I don't have time to coordinate that.

I took advantage of a computer purchase program at work. Buy up to X dollars
worth of computer, get approval from manager, submit receipt, sign payroll
deduction contract for amount from each check to pay off in 24 months, and get
check to cover the purchase.

I finally got tired of my computer hardware being the limiting factor on using
my DSL. We have DSL at work, and last year, I got a new laptop with 2 GB RAM to
replace the old one with 512 MB RAM. I did not expect a new computer with a
bigger CPU and more RAM to be so much faster when surfing using the same
internet connection.

I bought an ASUS CM Series Desktop, 64-bit with 64-bit Vista & free upgrade to
Win 7, the only reason I own computers with Vista! It is a quad core with 6 GB
RAM, and all kinds of bells and whistles. It is only about $150 more than what I
paid for the seven year old eMachine it will replace. The eMachine has 256 MB
RAM, and all the optimizations with Linux are not overcoming its limitations.
Also a 20 inch flat panel monitor is a treat compared to the 15 inch CRT it
replaces.

I also got an ASUS UX50 notebook. Other than Vista being stupid for getting it
to work with my wireless router, which I changed a setting and my work laptop
will not connect now!, it is great. Once I get my wireless working again, and
copy all her files to it, my wife will be busy with the laptop.

I have heard good things about ASUS, and so far I am impressed with the speed of
these systems. Vista, however, continues to be a frustration. Windows 7 better
be as good as I heard it is.

I also bought a 1.5 TB External USB drive.

I am in the process of using the free, open source program Clonezilla, which is
a Live CD like Norton's ghost, to save each partition and drive from my
eMachine, so I can run them in a virtual machine using Virtual Box to get files
and settings without having to burn a ton of CDs. I have read that since the
emulated hardware is different, that I will have to call Microsoft to activate
it, but I can also just install WinXP to a new Virtual Box Image, so I can get
at the stuff that is Windows only. My Linux partitions should work without any
issues.

On the old PC, I only booted into Windows to apply patches. My wife quit using
that PC.

We also have an old white-box PC that was my dad's old computer, it is newer
than the eMachine, and is WinXP. I plan to make an image of it, wipe it and
re-install a fresh Windows, or maybe install Linux and use VirtualBox to run
Windows.

I had not used VirtualBox until now, and figured out how to use a CD iso image
to run. I also found instructions for installing ReactOS in a VirtualBox image.

ReactOS is a project to re-create the functionality of Windows in its own
stand-alone operating system. React OS works closely with Wine. ReactOS is not
yet ready for prime time as the main OS on a PC, but it is solid enough, that it
can show you what it can do. I downloaded NoteTab Light and installed it into my
ReactOS image. It works ok, but it has some quirks similar to what we have seen
on Wine. I did not try NoteTab Standard or Pro yet.

In ReactOS NoteTab Light won't minimize, and the trick to click on the library
bar and drag to select a library is needed. I did not try everything, but it is
another option to try.

I plan to do a dual-boot option on the new desktop, but want to wait until I get
the Windows 7 CD, since I have read that I may have to install from scratch, and
don't want to have to re-do this whole PC in a few weeks.

With the capabilities of this new PC, I can easily create a VirtualBox virtual
machine running Linux. I also plan to wipe the old eMachine and install Linux
only. That should help its speed. I am considering making it a server.

I just got all this new hardware home about 1:30 PM Saturday, and it's now 1:30
AM Sunday, so things are still a work in progress.

I did not start the Clonezilla process of making images of the old eMachine
until about 10:00. That old PC is only USB 1.0, so it's taking awhile.
Thankfully, the first drive is "only" 20 GB, and the other 80 GB. I copied just
the Windows partition off the first disk, and am now copying the entire disk 1,
so that it will boot as an image in VirtualBox. Once the images are done, I can
use Clonezilla again to write them to the VirtualBox images.

I also have an Epson all in one printer/scanner/FAX that was part of a package
deal with the desktop that I have not even had time to take out of the box. I'm
hoping it works with Linux....

Locations of the programs I have mentioned:

Clonezilla: http://clonezilla.org/

VirtualBox: http://www.virtualbox.org/

ReactOS: http://www.reactos.org/en/index.html

I hope I haven't lost you in my rambling, and that this information is helpful.

How do I go about finding a file/directory beginning with a period, i.e., "."? I
have tried adding ".*" to the File Filters in the Options but it doesn't seem to
work. Any ideas (I'm sure it's simple ...)?

In Konqueror file manager its in the options/settings

"Show hidden folders/files" yes / no

(default is no)

In a terminal, xterm:

(ls -la command)

bash-3.1$ ls -la

If this is Ntab file dialog (using Wine) then it's likely in the wine config
settings

The beginning with . scheme constitutes "hidden" in Linux and AFAIK not
Ntab.

But if Wine keeps 'em hidden then Ntab (likely will not see 'em) takes what
come from upstream

I know how to find them in Linux; it's NoteTab I was looking for, as it doesn't
show in the "open file" box.

Under Unix, files starting with a dot, are considered hidden, and should
not be shown in directory listing (unless explicitly asked for), just
like DOS-style hidden files. If you want them treated as regular files,
set this value to 1.

http://linux.die.net/man/5/wine.conf

The default wine config (in wine.conf file) setting makes dotfiles so
they're like they have the DOS hidden attribute to windows app. Win app
(Notetab) cannot see files that are with the DOS hidden attribute.

The default of zero above in the wine config needs changed to a 1 to let
wine pass them on as see-able instead of as hidden.

Wine no longer has a config file, it was phased out in 2005
<http://wiki.jswindle.com/index.php/Wine_Config_File>. Using the arguments shown
here http://wiki.winehq.org/ChristianDannieStorgaard , I tried the "-d,
--show-dot-files" but it doesn't work. Here is the way that Wine set-up the way
it calls my program:

env WINEPREFIX="/home/lee/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\NoteTab Pro
5\NotePro.exe"

I have tried all these combinations

env WINEPREFIX="/home/lee/.wine" wine -d, --show-dot-files "C:\Program
Files\NoteTab Pro 5\NotePro.exe"
env WINEPREFIX="/home/lee/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\NoteTab Pro
5\NotePro.exe" -d, --show-dot-files
env WINEPREFIX="/home/lee/.wine" -d, --show-dot-files wine "C:\Program
Files\NoteTab Pro 5\NotePro.exe"

but to no avail. Any other ideas?

I haven't used Wine, but a comma between the options looks quite unusual.
Did you try it without?

Yes, it's supposed to be two different commands, which I tried in different
configurations to no avail.

I guess there is no way to do it, using Wine.

Sorry for the lack of a reply until now. Been down with the crud that's going
around. Finally, feel almost normal, but still tired, and not blowing my nose
every 30 seconds.

I don't have my linux box running at the moment. I got my new PC set up in its
place now.

Will get Wine & NoteTab on a linux VM later today to check. I already have the
Ubuntu VM ready.

I seem to remember that NoteTab could see the dotfiles without too much trouble.
As I recall, setting a linux directory to be a drive letter handled it. I am
sure I had dotfiles that I edited regularly in NoteTab.

Okay, I got it. In the Wine configuration window (winecfg), under the Drives
tab, there's a checkbox for "Show dot files" (You'll find it waaaaay down at the
bottom.)

Then, when trying to open a file in NoteTabe, select "Open" or "Open Document",
then, in the "Look in" dropdown box, go to "My Computer" and select the Linux
drive (NOT the "C:" drive), e.g., "z:" Then "home", and your home directory.
From there you should be able to see all the directories and files beginning
with "."!

I knew I had did it before on another system but it was just too easy ;->

Lee,

Thanks for your perseverance!

I am not sure why, but running NoteTab Light via wine in and Ubuntu Jaunty
Virtual Machine in Virtual Box is VERY slow. This virtual machine has 4 times
the RAM as my old PC, so it should not be slow. It may be that I am running too
many other apps in Windows, but the VM should be separate from that.

I could not get the latest available wine for Ubuntu to install directly. I had
to install 1.0 that is the latest stable in the normal Ubuntu repository. I then
installed NoteTab Light right away, and it took forever. Still waiting on the
Wine configuration to come up, as I was going to check that. Glad you found it
Lee, should be a big help to others.

I am sure I had dotfiles that I edited regularly in NoteTab.

FWIW I have to open the files in htdocs (in xampp) using this method too.
That's the only way NT can find them.

Yeah, that's generally the way I'm using it also (XAMPP).

I've been away from the list for a few weeks now. I have not been able to check
the last couple of Wine updates.

My Dad went into the hospital in October. He was there a week, when I went out
to help my sister who was getting the run around.

Long story short, he only had one kidney and it failed. There was nothing more
that could be done. He passed on the 10th. I just got back home last night. The
good news is that he is no longer in pain, and is finally with Mom, who he has
missed so terribly the last four years. He was in bad health the last 39 years,
since I was six, and was almost 74. We said goodbye to him many times over the
years. We always thought he would go before Mom. Losing him was tough, but
nowhere near as wrenching as when we lost Mom.

I have a lot that has backed up on the home front over the last couple of weeks,
so will not have time to try the latest version of Wine for a while. Probably
not until the next update or so.

I am doing fine, just tired and run down from a couple overnights in the waiting
room, and too much junk food, and two 12 hour drives. I just don't bounce back
like I used to.

I was wondering why things have been so quiet. From your most recent post, it
seems that you're jumping right back in! Hope you're back %100 soon. :)

(I've been pretty quiet myself - shower then kitchen remodel currently in
process. Besides I'm still running Gutsy and Wine 1.0 so hardly cutting edge!)

Hello
I am an old user of NTB in Windows. Half a year ago I switched to a Macintosh.
After suffering severely from NTB abstinence, I finally managed to bumble
through an installation via Wine and Winebottle, although I have to confess that
I didn't grasp half of what I was doing.

One surprising issue turned out to be that none of the existing clipbook
libraries were available. Even more surprising however, was that it was quite
possible to create new clipbook libraries, and I have laboriously, but
successfully recreated the clipbooks that I need.

But most surprising is that I am completely unable to find where these newly
created clipbook libraries are placed. I have tried searching the whole computer
for the created .clb-files, and even searched for unique strings placed inside
the clips, but to no avail.

This is not a serious issue, NTB is running fine, but it is irritating, not
least since I have this feeling that it is simply a stupid oversight. I am aware
that this group mainly deals with Linux installations, but Mac OSX is also
mentioned, so I am taking a chance that there might be someone who can give me a
hint.

Hi

In Wine in Linux maybe the wine folder name begins with a dot.

Such (any folder name begins with a dot) is a hidden folder in Linux

ls -la

the above is a Linux command that displays the hidden folders too
(command for use in a terminal).

I don't know Mac. But in linux you'd (likely may) need to see the
hidden folders in order to find where the .clb are kept.

If you drill down to NTB Libraries via /home/<user>/.wine/ you will find
an empty (NTB) Libraries folder in the end.

Drilling down your mounted windows partition, however, will find you
your *.clb files.

If I launch NTB with wine (under Fedora 12), NoteTab loads all the Clips
in the Program Files\NoteTab\Libraries folder.

The location of the Clips may be a pointer.

If the Clips are stored in C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\,
or C:\Users etc in Windows 7, you may have to do some extra configuring
of wine or possibly copying the Clips to the NTB program
folder\libraries will be enough.

But this is all Linux talk and I wonder/doubt if the original poster
with the MAC OS problem can do anything with this info.

Cheers
Gerard

Linux is a Unix like OS and Mac OS X is based on BSD Unix, so it should be very
close.

Hi again

Thanks for your suggestions. You encouraged me to keep on digging. And lo and
behold, I did find it! The path had fourteen levels, with a structural logic
that was beyond my feeble mind, so it took some ferreting. Evidently the whole
branch where this (and lots of other stuff) is placed is outside the scope of
file searches, making it the Mac equivalent of dot-files I guess.

Again thank you all. This was quite satisfying.
