Gordon,

I have installed Mailbag on Wine and it ran. That was using 32-bit linux, I
believe both Slacker and Ubuntu, if I recall correctly, I even installed it on
Wine with Fedora 3 & 4, way back.

I do not have a PC with Linux currently running, long story.

I have had lots of personal interruptions in getting Linux running on my new PC,
which is 64-bit. I suspect your issue is something with 64-bit.

I have been diagnosed with mono, so my energy level is extremely low when I get
done with work, so I can't commit to when I can look into this. I have a backlog
of things I need to do with Wine.

We also have a group ntb-linux for getting NoteTab and other Fookes software
running on Wine and other methods. I have Cc'd this to that list.

Hello all!

Wine 1.2-rc7 Released on Friday, July 9, 2010. It will be the final release
unless there are any new issues found.

I finally got the free Windows 7 update installed on my new PC - that I got in
October, and then configured to dual-boot Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid).

I also just got the latest release candidate of Ubuntu installed.

My new PC is 64-bit, but I used the 32-bit version of Ubuntu, as it said the
64-bit was not ready for daily use.

The Wine install was fine, as it was a clean install. I was also impressed that
it changed the icon on the install files to show the typical wineglass icon of a
Windows installer.

I then installed NoteTab Light from a fresh download from NoteTab.com.

It installed and started up in a flash!

The flashing that occurs with CTRL+Tab and CTL+SHIFT+Tab is fixed.

The issue of the disappearing buttons when minimize and restore is fixed.

I then installed NoteTab Pro and confirmed the above two are fixed, but our
third most common issue still exists.

The issue of the appearance of the cursor not advancing when pressing enter is
still an issue. It happens on both outlines and regular text files.

I will review the other reported issues and update the NoteTab pages on the Wine
products list. I will report back any other issues that I run into.

Please advise the rest of us of any new issues with NoteTab and the current beta
of Wine.

Gordon,

I have configured Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit to run on my 64-bit system. I am using the
latest release candidate of Wine 1.2 RC7. This will be the new version of Wine,
unless there are major issues found before tomorrow.

I have installed the latest version of Mailbag Assistant - 4.01 and it runs.

I do get an error about "Access violation at address 7E8B3C43 in module
'comctl32.dll'. Read of address 0000007B." When I click Cancel on the E-mail
Wizard screen. It did lock up on me when clicking Next on the E-Mail Wizard
screen for Sample Messages.

I did not have to delete Wine or uninstall Wine, and no other Wine apps or
Windows programs, NoteTab Light and Pro, had any issues.

To close the locked program, I opened a command prompt and ran ps ax and found
the pid of the "[Mailbag.exe] <defunct>" and did the command kill <pid>, in my
case "kill 3783", and it closed the hung MailBag Assistant.

I found that MailBag is looking for email files under
C:\users\username\Application Data\Mailbag Assistant\mailboxes. However, there
are no sample mailboxes in this location, so I had to navigate to C:\Program
Files\Mailbag Assistant\Samples. I was able to open the sample files and work
with them. I did turn off the open E-Mail Wizard by default.

When I tried to open the E-Mail Wizard via Tools > E-Mail Wizard it started a
loop of errors, and I had to kill the process again. Still no major issues with
Wine or other Windows apps in Wine.

It appears that the E-Mail Wizard has issues under Wine 1.2 RC 7.

Wine is designed to emulate WinXP by default, and can be configured to emulate
older versions. The dll, comctl32.dll is the common controls dialog, which
controls things like buttons and so forth, in Windows applications. However,
Wine does run and I used the installation of Mailbag on my Windows partition to
run Mailbag under Wine and download it again, so that I could install it under
Wine.

More specific error messages would also help. Also what version of Wine? The
command "wine --version" at the command prompt will give you the exact version
of Wine that you have.

If you error is like the one I received, it could either be a nuisance error, or
require other tweaking, but again, more information is needed. This dll is
emulated by Wine, but sometimes we need to copy the native Windows dll.

It is possible that your issue is something to do with 64-bit Linux. Ubuntu
64-bit is still on the experimental side, so I am not ready to take the plunge
on that yet.

Give us more information and join the ntb-linux group and we will be able to
assist you.

It is actually simple.

Right-Click a text file
Left-Click Properties
Go to the Open With tab
Click the Add button
Click the plus sign next to "Use a custom command"
This will open a command line with a browse button.
Click brows and navigate to the desired editor.

For NoteTab Pro, for example, the path will be (Case Sensitive!!):

NOTE: Directories starting with a period (.) are hidden, so you will either need
to type the full path or tell the system browser (Nautilus) to show hidden files
by Right-Clicking a blank area in the window, then click Show hidden files.

/home/username/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/NoteTab Pro 6/NotePro.exe

Larry,

This is great! I have been trying to figure this out for some time now. Also,
you have now added the "notetabe.exe" program to the list when you get to step
#3 below (" Open With tab").

However, I have a problem: it opens the program but not the file. Any
suggestions?

Operating System: Linux 2.6.24-28-rt #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Fri Jun 18 14:18:28 UTC
2010
Distribution: Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 (Yes, I know. I'm a bit behind in updating. I
use the LT packages but have been putting off updating)
   Window Manager: Gnome 2.22.3
   Wine: wine-1.0

Thanks!

Lee, that should work. Not sure what's up.

You may want to try Google for "default text editor ubuntu 8.04".

That may shed some light on your particular issue.

Subject: Wine 1.2 Released

Wine 1.2 was officially released today.

The builds for various platforms are in the process of being built.

Here's the quote from the WinHQ home page:

"This release represents two years of development effort and over 23,000
changes. The main highlights are the support for 64-bit applications, and the
new graphics based on the Tango standard.

It also contains a lot of improvements across the board, and over 3,000 bug
fixes. See the release notes <http://www.winehq.org/announce/1.2> below for a
summary of the major changes."

Source: http://www.winehq.org/

One of the main issues reported as fixed, that I can confirm:

"- The strange window management behavior used by Delphi-generated
   applications is better supported now."

With 64-bit support from this version, I suspect that it will resolve odd issues
that users on 64-bit OSes may have experience.

Bug 11956 - NoteTab All types & versions Select Clip Library from Library Bar

The bug where clicking the library name on the library bar closes the clipbook
window is still in issue in Wine 1.2 RC7.

I forgot about this one when I updated this list here yesterday.

The same work around still works - click the library name desired and move the
mouse over the document window before releasing the mouse button.

I have always had problems trying to get this working so gave up years ago. I
keep NoteTab in the Gnome panel and just work from there when I want to do
serious editing - html, php etc. For just everyday text files, I use gedit.
Part of the reason is that NoteTab requires an extension to save a text file
while Linux doesn't and I like to keep all my text files with the name only.
But then I don't have to use them on Windows because I am 99.9% Linux only . . .

Lee, I am also on Hardy (just finally upgraded a few weeks ago) and running Wine
1.0 because some of the newer versions weren't working quite right. Ya know . .
. if it works . . .

I tested Lucid but the boot/splash/login really suck and are not very
customizable at this point. Since Gutsy the whole boot/login process has been
harmonized with my desktop wallpaper and it is a thing of beauty! That ugly
sequence in Lucid may drive me to another distro!! Well that and Grub2 also . .
.

What exactly was wrong with it? I have seen others say that Lucid is fantastic.
(Of course, some people think anything new is fantastic, hence the inquiry ...)

The boot/login sequence is U - G - L - Y!!! And can't yet be customized to my

I was just notified via PM of a new tutorial on GRUB2 theming. You can download
the pdf here:

Now if someone can do the same for the login, I just might consider Lucid at
some point.

FWIW, NoteTab will allow me to create a file with no extension if I
enclose the name in quotes.

I'm guess that that uses the Gnome desktop which would use the GDM (or)
Gnome login manager/screen/dialog. Grub2 hasn't been out that long
yet. But I do hear lots of good about it.

Me, I'm a simple Slackware user. I set up my friend's Slackware so as
to auto login to the KDE desktop. This uses KDM (kde login manager)
They are ok with it (not ugly).

BTW, XDM is the generic, an X Windows login manager which may be used
for a variety of the different desktops.

GDM, KDM, XDM

But I use none of those three. Instead, I login on a terminal:

al@P5Q:~$ Welcome to Linux 2.6.28.8-smp (tty1)

al@P5Q:~$ startx

and then I start X

which I have configured so as to load the KDE desktop.

I'm on 12.2 Slackware. I skipped the 13.0 release of Slackware.

I'm soon to install 13.1 Slackware.

When I do, I may use KDM. But I might not.

It's Slackware. Do what you want to do.

BTW Slackware defaults to Lilo but has a option to use Grub instead.
Grub2 might be a Slackware /extra package by now (available for those
who want to use it).

Alan.

You're both welcome.

Is there an advantage to doing this or is it just a personal preference?
I realize that extensions are meaningless to Linux but it's convenient
for me and I retain the habit.

I think it is more personal preference. I like to use extensions so I can tell
at a glance what a file is. Habit from 25+ years of DOS & Windows.

It is personal preference. I create a LOT of plain text files in the same
folder and it makes it easier to focus on the titles - just looks cleaner.
Almost all other files retain an extension. Only exception I can think of is
the editing file in Avidemux which is created without an extension and I have no
idea what it is so can't add it.

The new development version, 1.3.0, had it's first release today.

Don't go to this version if you are unsure of development/beta software.

I will be updating and verifying the various issues that we know NoteTab has
had, as well as the few bigger issues that remained as of 1.2.0.

I'll post results once I update.

If anyone else goes to the development version, keep us informed of your issues
and what OS & version you are running.

It is too new, so the Ubuntu version is not yet ready.

Will update when I get it, etc.

Ubuntu update was finally available a week or so ago, still have same issues
with last beta.

Now 1.3.1 is out, but waiting for it on Ubuntu.

I'm new here.

I downloaded and installed, via Wine, the TopStyle program.

I'm looking for how to set up either NTP or the TopStyle CSS editor so that they
work with each other. When I try to open the TopStyle clip bar I only see a
pop-up saying I need to install TopStyle, which I've done, but don't see, in
either program, or in searches of both program's web sites or doing numerous
Google searches any "how to" details for mating/integrating these programs.

Can anyone here point me to some help instructions to do this?

Thanks...........Ron

Ron,

If you install NoteTab Pro to the defaults in Wine and TopStyle to the defaults
in Wine, it should work.

I have not tried installing TopStyle in wine, so I will have to try that when I
get a moment.

It is possible that it won't work on Wine, or will require tweaking.

If any one else has anything to suggest, please let us know.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the response.

I'm not sure what you mean by "to the defaults in Wine", but I'll look
that up.

FEI (For Everybody's Information): Both programs work fine by themselves.

Ron,

As I recall, there is nothing the user needs to do to make TopStyle work in
NoteTab. That is what I meant by the install defaults.

Perhaps there is a manual change that might work. It could be that a dll is
needed, or something.

What version of Windows do you have Wine set to emulate? The default is WinXP.

I do not recall if the demo version of TopStyle will work with NoteTab, for us
to help figure this out. I see that it is $80 to purchase the full version. The
website is: http://svanas.dynip.com/topstyle/

I have a dual boot system with Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04. I also have VirtualBox
with a WinXP client. I can try installing to WinXP and see if that works.

If anyone else uses TopStyle, or has had a chance to check into this, please
chime in.

I downloaded the trial version of TopStyle 4. I think it may take the pro
version for automatic integration. However, I noticed that there is no mention
of NoteTab on the TopStyle website. Perhaps the new owners of TopStyle changed
how they want third party integration to work.

What version of TopStyle are you using? That might make a difference.

I used the Custom Launch option under View > Options Tools Tab, to get the trial
version of TopStyle 4 to work with NoteTab Pro (Trial) on WinXP in VirtualBox. I
have to get Virtual Box to let me see my other drives, so I can install the full
version of NoteTab.

This allows the currently focused document to be opened in TopStyle, using
either the menu: Tools > Launch Document or CTRL+T.

I will check with the NoteTab HTML group to see if anyone is using TopStyle with
NoteTab.

Ron,

I got the full version of NoteTab Pro 6.2/fv installed on my WinXP in VirtualBox
on Ubuntu. When I try to run any of the TopStyle clips, I get an "error"
message. This is with TopStyle 4.0.0.81 trial mode (unregistered).

The message I receive is the same as with the Trial version: "This Clip
require's Bradsoft's TopStyle CSS editor, version 1.51 or later. Click OK to
visit Bradsoft's web site for more information about TopStyle, or click Cancel
to abort."

Do you get this message or something different? I need to make sure I can make
it work in WinXP before I go too far. I also need to know what version of
NoteTab Pro, and TopStyle you are using.

While researching the issue of TopStyle integration with NoteTab, I decided to
be thorough and confirm that the integration of other apps works correctly on
Wine.

The list of apps that integrate with NoteTab are from the NoteTab Help file,
under Third Party Tools.

TopStyle -

CSEHTML Validator - Note: Both pro and lite versions support NoteTab
integration. I only tested the lite version on Wine, and it works.

Tidy - Tidy is an open source command line validator. I previously verified that
it works, and I verified that again today. Previously, I had pointed out that
the Linux version of Tidy could be used also, as the integration allows the user
to search for the Tidy program. Tidy for Windows is available here: 32-bit -
http://www.paehl.com/open_source/?HTML_Tidy_for_Windows; 64-bit
http://int64.org/projects/tidy-binaries.

Clip Writer - Works by itself, but some issues with integration. I need to dig
into this more.

FinePrint - I have not yet tested on Wine.

IntelliComplete Server - This appears to work just fine.

WordWeb - I have not yet tested on Wine.
