Wine 1.3.4 was released today.

I will post updates once it is ready for Ubuntu.

So far 1.3.3 is good, except for the couple of issues we still have from a while
back...

Wow that was fast, this is now available for Ubuntu.

It still has the issues of prior variations of 1.3.x.

Wine 1.2.1 is an update to the Stable Release of Wine.

I am using the 1.3.x releases, so I will not be going backwards to try it out.

If anyone has any new issues, beyond the ones we already know about with
NoteTab, please let us know.

Please include your OS and its version.

Wine 1.3.6 was released yesterday.

It is actually available for Ubuntu now. NOTE: If you don't know this already,
you have to go to the WineHQ.org site and get to the updates page and enable the
beta updates, if you are interested in the latest changes.Different OSes and
flavors of Linux have different distribution methods for the latest Wine.

I know most of us like to stay with what works. I always update to the latest as
soon as I can to report back, not everyone is comfortable with that.

Still usual remaining NoteTab issues.

Have a safe Halloween!

Hope you are all well.

Thanks Larry for keeping up with this for us. Actually, i don't think I could
use it if it was "fixed'. I have grown so used to using it the way it is.

The stable branch, now 1.2.1, has fixed a few of the issues.

I would suggest that all new users go to the most current stable version
available.

The issues of clicking on the library tabs at the bottom, and the cursor at the
bottom of the page are the two that remain. I believe there is a third, but as
with the first two, we have documented how to get around them as they are minor.

Still, the benefit of open source, is that it takes a lot for your preferred
version to quit working, unlike Microsoft.

One thing that I would like to see is NoteTab's pasteboard function work with
the native OS's clipboard. The Notepad that is installed with Wine, and other
apps installed via Wine work. I was testing this and stumbled across something,
just now. The pasteboard can capture information from the native OS clipboard if
you immediately copy something from a Wine-based app. That means it is very close
to being able to work. I wish I had time to look into this further today. Not
sure when I'll have time to do so.

Alright, this may be old hat to some people but I just found out a cool thing in
NoteTab Pro.

When writing content or developing Web pages I generally work with PHP-based
files, which means I need my Linux machine running under my XAMPP-based
development or Firefox just spins. However, the other day I had a *.htm file in
NoteTab Pro and I tried displaying it in Firefox (which I have never seemed to
get it to do). But, looking under the "Tools" menu, I selected the "Other
Browser" and, surprisingly, it brought up the "Wine Internet Explorer" -- which
I never knew I had! (And I don't mean the "IE 6.0 implementation" one) While the
Wine Internet Explorer is not the greatest (it's missing the menu bar, I wasn't
able to view the source etc., access new windows or popup windows -- anyone know
how?), it does display the file for a quick view. I was even able to click on a
link and access the Internet. Then I also figured out that, unlike Firefox
without the XAMPP system running, I can display .php files in the Wine Internet
Explorer with no problems. (I can also get a v-e-r-y general idea of what pages
look like in those other guys.)

Anyone know how to directly enter URLs to view other pages on the Web?

As I said, this may be old hat to many of you but I feel like a kid in a candy
store. Now, if I need to do a quick check, I don't need to start up the XAMPP
system; I only need to change the file extension from .php to .htm. Oh my gosh!
This is the first time I have been excited about some Windows-based/related
product in years. (Please don't hold it against it ... heh, heh.)

Sean,

I have not tried running NoteTab on a USB with Wine. I do have it where I can
use it with Windows.

If you can place the graphic in the files section of the group, so we can see

Sean, Larry,

I don't use USB, but I'm annoyed by this same black border around the text area.
Have to fill the top line or two with a space/newline so I can see what I'm
doing.

Also when I make a text selection that goes to a line end, then the selection is
followed by black for the rest of the line and the whole of the following line.
Don't know if this is related.

Me on Linux Mint 10 with NoteTab 6.2 and Wine 1.2.2 from repository.

MarkH

Geez, Larry, very sorry to hear it! We have a history of back trouble in my
family, so I know first hand what a discomfort & inconvenience that can be.

I'm going to search for this issue more generally in connection with Wine. I
suspect it's something folks might have seen with other programs.

Yeah, I'm feeling better, got some muscle relaxants from the doctor and can move
without hurting. They knock me out so only take at night.

Anyway - Odd that this is not a more prevalent issue.

I wonder if it might be a Wine setting, or customisation, or running a
particular Windows program in Wine, or even a Linux setting or program.

Did you download the linux.clb I put in the files area. There is a clip that can
tell us about your linux & wine settings, and NoteTab information. It may prove
helpful to compare with other's settings with the same problem.

Hi all,

I'm wonder if a particular video driver . . .

1. Some computers have Intel video hardware. Others have Nvidia. Yet
others have ATI/Radeon. Yet others have Matrox video hardware. Each
requires a specific and distinct Linux video driver.
--

2. On another note: I've an Asus motherboard whereby Slackware 12.2
incorrectly detects the sound hardware as well as its one pata
controller. My sound works fine though (or at least good enough for me)
**with the wrong driver loaded**. I forget the specifics but it loads a
brand y driver even though it has brand x sound hardware.

So, (1) the drivers of some brands (some Linux users) experience
sometimes somewhat differing video results on one brand versus another
brand. Compositing and 3D can make a huge difference -- in fact I'd
look here first at this ie is it turned on or is it off? Sometimes
doing manual sys admin things like create an xorg.conf file and/or
tinker with the video config, edit the xorg.conf (can make better video,
can mess it up too).

As far as the (2) there are ways to check. As root (in Slackware) in a
terminal, the lspci command in Slackware lists the hardware. The (in
Slackware) lsmod command lists out the loaded modules (drivers) and what
hardware each module/driver is for. Other distro may not have the lspci
but most likely have a different hardware lister utility/app.

3. Sometimes for safety the best video driver goes unused. IOW
defaults to a more generic video driver due to when it probed, only so
much (not quite enough) data was returned from the probe (developers of
video drivers do not want to garner a reputation for damaging people's
video hardware). I don't use Ubuntu; I don't know how advanced Ubuntu
might be getting in this (plug and play) arena.

4. Rather very conservative settings/setup/config on the most correct
video driver (due to the same reason as #3) ie just not quite enough
returned on that auto probe (for plug and play)

I use Slackware which encourages the mechanic in me (get under the
hood). Conservative Slackware probably leans in a direction of being
one of the Linux distros with a tendency towards some of the least
amount of plug and play things (brings out the sys admin in me) -- but,
even Slackware is getting more and more of plug and play.

Linux is evolving ie all of the constant kernel development which keeps
including new features which often times link to what a certain video
driver needs to have. IOW the video driver can't do it if the needed
feature is not in the kernel. I've been following this some (kernel
changelogs, etc.) due to I have an ATI Radeon 5450 PCI-E video adapter
that continues to be better and better supported by the open source
video driver (the closed source driver had its problems too, one of them
choked on me and wouldn't work at all. I now have decent video using
one of the latest kernels I compiled myself with the open source driver
for that card.

Alan,

Go point. I did not think of that. I believe we earlier had a few who had some
issues a while back that seemed to be driver related.

I'm Running Ubuntu 10.10 and don't have a problem, but it is a desktop. Laptops
have different video hardware, etc. Ubuntu is usually good at supporting a broad
range of hardware, and should work fine on newer laptops.

Sean - Is this a newer laptop? As Alan suggests, trying a change of setting on
the video driver may help.

Apologies if I'm bringing up questions answered long ago, but I can't find
anything when I search the group.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10 on my Thinkpad T43, and then Wine and NoteTab
Light. NoteTab starts up quick, but I have a couple of issues:

(1) Very slow loading of large (400K) files
(2) When I search for text, the search text isn't highlighted as it usually is
under Windows, though the cursor does jump to the right place.

These problems aren't deal breakers, but they are kind of irritating. Just
wondering if anyone else has encountered these and managed to fix them?

Mike,

Welcome to the group.

I have not run into that myself.

I tend to run Pro however, so that may be why.

If anyone else has any experience with this, please let us know.

Larry,

I think I'll try an older version of Light and see what happens; the WineHQ
website only lists 5.5 and 5.7.

I don't think that will work. I am behind on updating the versions listed there.
