composite or compositing is probably yet towards new in Linux.

And since Ubuntu likes to advance on the latest, I'd put money on it
that Ubuntu has composite enabled by default.

Not that it is your problem for I do not know. But some specific video
hardwares/video drivers do not get along so well with compositing. And,
thus, some people turn off the compositing which in these cases
sometimes gives them better video than, say, "just a bit of an
accident/oops" which is what they had for video before they turned off
the compositing.

Use at your own risk.

Thanks, Alan.

Is anyone else having a problem with Yahoo Groups this morning? It is acting
like I am not a member of my groups. I am the administrator of ntb-linux, and it
asks if I want to join.

ARG!

The ntb-linux Clip Library I mentioned for gathering information is in File
Area.

It is called:

ntb-linux.zip
ntb-linux Clip Library Version 1.0.1

Put this in your NoteTab Libraries under Wine.

The clip "Get Wine & *nix Info" is what we need. I need to update it to capture
information on Monitors and Video drivers, if possible. Until then, you will
need to gather that information manually, as suggested by Alan's posts.

It also has a clip for getting Windows information, that will work in both Wine
and Windows.

It has a few other clips that you might find helpful.

If there are suggestions for additions or improvements, please let me know.

Odd, my work laptop using FireFox my Yahoo Groups don't work right, but they are
fine with Internet Explorer. I was worried for a minute, but now have a new

Well, since it was all my Yahoo Groups, but only on Firefox, I deleted my login
for Yahoo from Firefox.

It still somehow remembered me as logged in in Yahoo Groups. I had to log out.

I found when I modded my router to go to DD-WRT last month, the how-to mentioned
Firefox would pull an old password out of the ether, and recommended using IE if
on Windows. Now I have seen it, in case anyone else runs into it.

An older Firefox on Slackware 12.2 it took me 15 minutes late last night
to get logged on to my yahoogroups.

it rejected my correct user and correct password as invalid

it then brought up graphic with alpha numeric string for me to enter

repeat times 6

Then clicked on lost my password whereby it told me I incorrectly
entered the alpha numeric string is the problem not my password (after
it rejected that password times 6 or more).

Finally it took and logged me on. But I'd changed nothing.

Power flickers, motherboard conductivity problems, overloaded, glitch in
the sql of its database records, hard drive didn't write correctly to
one spot on disk -- IOW it looks to me like yahoo's server(s) were
having reality alteration things going on. Otherwise known as whacko

No problems on my home PC using Firefox on Ubuntu.

When I have weird unexplained problems helping clients with the various software
I support in my day job (accounting & payroll) I call it a "Twighlight Zone
Issue". I like to have answers and clients often demand them, but if you can't
find the circumstances that led to the cause, then the answer is, "I don't
know".

I hate that answer.

I spent 6 hours on an "issue" over several days because totals were changing for
a client. Pulled in a copy of their data so I could play with it, and finally
narrowed it down to they changed the way they had some things configured, but
did not change their process to match how it now works. I like how "nothing has
changed", leads to something wrong with the software. They can keep their old
procedure if they don't change their configuration, or keep the configuration if
they change their procedures.

Now if I could just make that border thing appear to help those affected, but it
seems to be a display/video related issue.

I like puzzles, but need all the pieces to hope to figure out this one.

Since his desktop machine does not have the issue whilst his laptop
does. And, any video in Wine has to access down through (or on top of)
the Linux video driver.

If it were mine I'd check any and all to do with Linux video ie what
hardware, which driver being used by the kernel, the refresh rates being
used, the dpi

sometimes you have to blacklist a driver in your udev config (it
sometimes auto thinks it needs a driver too many)

When all that known to be fully up to needed spec. and if still the
prob. then I'd try disable composite

If still the prob then I'd leave composite off then begin further as
formerly above but perhaps (I would do so) try an older version and/or a
newer version/edition of the correct Linux video driver needed.

Linux chrome vid driver (hardly anybody has that vid hardware anymore)
doesn't fully auto detect in Slackware -- you have to manually enter in
some ie the refresh rates and some others then you get real nice video
otherwise you will be stuck with very grainy and not pretty 800 x 600 or
even 600 x 450 resolution (yuck).

The all of video is like a unit that all of its various pieces must be
correct or else the whole thing is thrown off even if just only very
slightly so due to, for example, a slightly off refresh rate (config.
problem).

You need to look at your X server's log file, Xorg.0.log it resides
under /var/log on Slackware.

BTW the video drivers are loaded by the X server (vid drivers do not
show with the lsmod command - at least it's this way on slackware).
Above log file tells you which vid driver(s) loaded successfully or not.

BTW, FWIW, in the slackware forum (I regularly follow this forum for
years and years) at linuxquestions.org for longer than the last 7 or 8
months, many (unhappy) posts about Intel video driver. Such driver been
under heavy development (generally impacts stability ie covers many
models Intel vid hardware - the challenge to not break other Intel
hardware models while improving for some models). Some those posts,
they get it to working alright.

if that is the problem it seems like it should be a LOT
more common, shouldn't it?

How many people are using Notetab in Wine on your version of Ubuntu with
the same Intel vid hardw as yours?

How many members are there on this ntb-linux emailing list?

If that other poster who is also with the same prob could do lspci as
you did and then post the results.

1.2.3, and NoteTab Pro 6.0. I then copied over the NoteTab Pro directory from
the previous drive so that I would have the same set-up, etc. All seems to work
fine except for one problem:

When NTP starts, the cursor has focus on the page; however, when I switch to
another program and back it loses focus (except for the first time I do it). I
then have to click the cursor on the page to regain focus or press "ESC". Also,
when I switch back to NTP the "File" menu is highlighted (pressing "ESC" takes
the focus off it and back to the cursor as mentioned above), however the title
bar in the program itself shows as if the program does not have focus (it is
grayed-out). In fact, I am typing this in NTP right now and it is still
grayed-out, as if it didn't have focus. Yet I can click on the title bar and it
then shows the color.

I thought someone had a problem like this a while back but I checked my mailing

then have to click the cursor on the page to regain focus or press "ESC". Also,
when I switch back to NTP the "File" menu is highlighted (pressing "ESC" takes
the focus off it and back to the cursor as mentioned above), however the title
bar in the program itself shows as if the program does not have focus (it is
grayed-out). In fact, I am typing this in NTP right now and it is still
grayed-out, as if it didn't have focus. Yet I can click on the title bar and it
then shows the color.

I thought someone had a problem like this a while back but I checked my mailing
list files and couldn't find anything. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks to both of you. I'll give that a try. (I forgot that Ubuntu is several
versions of Wine behind, although I don't know why.)

I'll let you know what happens.

It does not make aense that Ubuntu updates fior the beta 5x series is hard to
find. I have not been able to test to see if there is anything new to report. I
may have to find time to compile from source.
It isn't hard, but takes more atrention to detail than just installing an
update.

Well, that didn't go well. The program was s-----l-----o-----w I had to revert
back to Wine v 1.2.2. I'll just live with this minor inconvenience for now.
(Actually, v.1.0 worked much better. I just might switch back to that.)

Thanks anyway.

You know I was just thinking of you the other day and that you probably are
still using v 1.0. I just might revert back to that so I don't have these other,
new problems. If something works, why change?

Thanks,

Any idea where I can get a binary copy of v.1 so i don't have to figure out how
to "build" one?

With the current version, I am also having a problem with losing NoteTab Pro
when I switch to other programs and then switch back, I can't see it in the
alt-tab window or on the toolbar with the other programs. Any one else have this
problem?

I thought I might have an old .deb stashed but no luck. I upgraded to Squeeze
about a year ago but can't remember how I got wine installed. Once I did, I
just dropped my old .wane folder into Home and was good to go. Try here for
older versions:

Thanks but I already tried there. Those have to be "built" and I'm not sure how
to do it, plus the Wine site talks about "installing build dependencies" and I
have no idea what that means. Think I'll just stick with what I have until I can
find an old .deb file or work out the current problem.

BTW, the problem I mention in my last e-mail ("losing NoteTab Pro when I switch
to other programs and then switch back") only happens intermittently. I'll see
how it works.

Does anyone know how to restore access to NoteTab once it does get "dropped"
from the program panel and the ALT-TAB switcher? It's really getting old now
having to keep killing NoteTab and then re-start it.

Do you mean current version of Ubuntu or Wine?

With Ubuntu 11.x and up, the new interface makes alt+tab a little off for me. I
have to try a couple of times to get it to go to the program I want. This is
whether I have a program running in Wine or not.

It doesn't happen to any program not running under Wine so it must be related to
Wine (v.1.2.2), although it could be a combination of both (I'm running Ubuntu
10.04 - I like the LTS versions) because it didn't happen when I was running
Ubuntu 8.04 and an earlier version of Wine. I am "trying" to see what makes it
happen but I usually am working away and (sometimes) ... poof ... it's gone. It
doesn't happen all the time but it is frustrating when it does. I don't know if
it makes a difference but when I ran NoteTab Pro 6.2 using the terminal I got
the follow errors (there not dups, it printed out all three errors):

fixme:font:load_VDMX No suitable ratio found
fixme:font:load_VDMX No suitable ratio found
fixme:font:load_VDMX No suitable ratio found

I can't seem to find what this means and if it is related to the "missing
program" problem (although I doubt it seeing as it mentions the font). As was
previously mentioned, it ran fine (with the known problems of the cursor) under
Wine v.1.

BTW, does anyone know who to "bring the program back" so I can switch to it?
It's still running -- I can see it in the System Monitor.

Hi Lee

Perhaps this will point you in the right direction

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/56942

Since I can't lose my NoteTab I don't know if it will work but it works on a
background NoteTab using Gnome 2.30 on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from a command prompt
type

wmctrl -R Notetab

Just had a thought . . . have you tried to force the version back to 1.0?

Well, that was a bust. It will only allow me to use either v.1.2.2 or v.1.1.42.
Anyone have any other suggestions? Meanwhile, I'm going to try the Wine site and
the Ubuntu forum.
