Below you will find a formal invite from Cincom. Sorry that I did not pass
this on sooner but I just moved. Anyhow, I have been promoting this event
for awhile and I'm sure everybody on this list is aware of it.
Even if one can't make it for the entire day attending one of the
presentations will be more than worth the while.

I have been asked to notify people in our group regarding a Smalltalk position
in Connecticut. I apologize to
any who may feel that this may be an inappropriate use of this eGroup. However,
as a Smalltalk advocacy group
I feel that it is appropriate to help customers fulfill their project staffing
needs. After all , we need
Smalltalkers to complete Smalltalk projects or else customers will staff
projects with the other "type" if you
know what I mean.
Anyhow below is the position in question. Please refer any questions to the
contact person below .

BTW -- Below in James Robertson post to comp.lang.smalltalk he states
that the Smalltalk event in question is in replacement of ObjectExpo's
cancelled Smalltalk Solutions. I just wanted to point out that SIGS
cancelled the entire ObjectExpo conference whose content by far was
largely Java i.e. essentially both the Java and Smalltalk content were
cancelled. This is then our attempt to provide our user group and
customer community with Smalltalk content on what is new and upcoming in
the Smalltalk space.

The big mystery is over. I would like to thank everybody for their
patience. Here it is , we
have organized an event with Cincom to be held March 23rd at the Crowne
Plaze in the heart
of Times Square. Currently our two main presenters are Penn State and
Lockheed Martin. We
are looking to setup some bof sessions or panel discussions on pressing
Smalltalk issues
etc. The time table will be very tight but we hope to perhaps squeeze a
short presentation
on PocketSmalltalk for the Palm Pilot and/ or Squeak.
The presentations deal with the use of Smalltalk in the Internet arena
for some large scale
applications. Should be very interesting. Pass the news to your
colleagues. The event will
probably run thru lunch. However, Cincom will be providing for a light
lunch.
Below you will find what was recently posted to comp.lang.smalltalk by

First of all , it would not be my place to make the announcement since we are
not directly
funding it. Also it may be more appropriate to make announcements when dates and
details are
finalized. I probably should have kept quiet but could not resist. It apparently
has peek
the interest of some since they have inquired as to how they could participate
from an
exhibitor or presenters perspective. All I can tell you is that I have been told
that it
will happen and I do have an idea on who maybe there exhibiting/presenting but I
will once
again refrain until things are more solid.

There are a few things happening with ObjectExpo and the NYC Smalltalk
Developer's group.
ObjectExpo is offering NYC ST Developer's meeting a discount on the
registration fee. Even though the content is very light on Smalltalk there
are a few things happening. There will be a presentation sponsored by Cincom
discussing a case study on the use of VisualWorks in the Internet space. The
candidates for the presentation are all impressive. Object Expo has provided
us with the space to hold our meeting and we would like to thank them for
their cooperation. Cincom and STIC as previously announced in this forum
will also be providing receptions and there will also be two birds of a
feather session on Smalltalk.
Any New York City Smalltalkers that have not been active lately but would
like to avail themselves of the discount being offered by Object Expo only
need to attend our upcoming meeting this thursday January 20th, 2000.
For further info on the discount offer visit our site and follow thru to our
ObjectExpo link.

******************************************************
eXtreme Programming, a light-weight software development methodology,
and other flexible processes have recently emerged as alternative
approaches to the typically heavier approaches currently advocated by
many software engineering organizations. Organizations have reported
important successes, yet there is a need to more formally communicate
and understand the values and best practices common to flexible
processes. The conference will consist of technical presentations,
plenary sessions, and tutorials.

NYC Smalltalk Developer's Group
There will be a presentation by Mission Software of their new Smalltalk
Java compiler. This technology allows among other things to develop in
Smalltalk yet generate 100% Sun Java compliant byte code and thus run
anywhere Java runs. A developer can actually co-develop both in
Smalltalk and Java at the same time i.e. ST classes can subclass Java
classes and vice versa and more. The presentation will be given by Allen
Davis who was one of the primary developer's for IBM VisualAge project
for the Olympics.
The presentation will be held this upcoming Thursday 16th of December.

NY Smalltalk Developers Group September General Meeting
Thursday, September 16, 1999 - 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
IBM headquarters in Manhattan
590 Madison Avenue at 57th St
--------------
Main Presentation: Introduction to Ultra Light Client and
'Serverization'.
Abstract:
As Smalltalk becomes more focused on the server, new technical
challenges face
developers. IBM's new Ultra Light Client framework is one path to help
manage
this complexity. ULC applications remove many of the headaches you face
in
building server applications while still giving you incredibly rich
GUI's.
Building a ULC application is for the most part the same as building a
fat
client application. However, certain 'serverization' issues need to be
addressed. These include concurrency, scalability and distribution.
This lecture will give you a good introduction to ULC and
'serverization'.

Date: Thu May 20, 1999
Time: 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Location: IBM headquarters in Manhattan 590 Madison Avenue at 57th St
Agenda: Intro to Squeak by Tansel Ersavas and PocketSmalltalk Tutorial by Steve
Harris
Steve Harris will be presenting a tutorial on PocketSmalltalk which
will incorporate the use of PilotMag. His tutorial will run from 6:30
to 7:00.
Tansel Ersavas will be presenting on Squeak from 7:00 pm to approx
8:00 pm.
Abstract of Tansel's presentation -
In this talk I will talk about Squeak, the latest flavor of Smalltalk
that is open source and free. The talk will emphasize the following with
examples.
There is a growing excitement around Squeak since its debut at OOPSLA
'97 with Alan Kay's memorable opening speech and Squeak Central's famous
"Back to the Future" paper. There have been more than 40,000 downloads
of Squeak and many universities including the UK Open University with
its 5000 strong computer science student population chose Squeak as the
main programming language for teaching object-oriented concepts.
Squeak is the ideal tool to complement free software movements such as
Linux. Since application development can be much faster with Squeak, it
may be used to close the gap between systems such as Linux and Windows.
Squeak has become one of the most powerful development tools around with
an impressive class library. It has built-in network support,
multi-paradigm user interface (UI) support, bit and vector based 2D and
3D graphics and sound. There are a remarkable number of utilities in the
Squeak distribution including web servers, a web browser, an ICQ client,
an email client, file import support for popular formats like Flash and
3D Studio and ports and rewrites of popular programs such as the Alice 3D
authoring environment.
Squeak has an open virtual machine (VM) written in a subset of
Smalltalk. This VM can be automatically translated to C for generation
of new VMs. This feature makes Squeak the ideal VM study platform, and
very easy to port to other systems.
Squeak can run anywhere from bare board chips without operating systems
to big systems, and it is easier to port to new systems than Java. And
unlike Java it is both freeware and totally open. This should make
Squeak very appealing to developers and users of new and emerging
systems.
