One of our members passed this along. Under the circumstances I think
that it is appropriate to pass this on to our membership and let
folks do what is in their hearts to do.

Cincom's Web Tool Kit and Forward

James Robertson, Product Manager for Cincom Smalltalk will start the
presentation with a discussion of the 5i.4 release as well as plans
for the 5i.5 release.

As product manager for both the VisualWorks and ObjectStudio product
lines, Mr. Robertson is involved in all aspects of the business,
including pricing, licensing terms, product evolution, and partner
relations.

Alan Knight will follow with an in depth discussion of the "Web Tool
Kit" which among other things provides a compliant implementaton of
Sun's JSP and Servlet specs but which exhibits some clear advantages
with respects to debugging and ease of use. The Web Tool Kit also
allows for an ASP based approach to web development.

Alan Knight works at Cincom Systems on VisualWorks web development
and is the lead architect on the soon to be released Web Tool Kit.
Prior to that he was with The Object People for many years, most
recently as lead architect for the TOPLink family of object-
relational mapping products. He was instrumental in creating a
version of TOPLink to do container-managed persistence in the
WebLogic server, and was a member of the expert group for the EJB 2.0
specification. He has been a columnist for The Smalltalk Report, and
has spoken at many conferences, including Smalltalk Solutions,
OOPSLA, the European Smalltalk User Group's Summer School, the
Borland/Inprise User Conference, and Java One. Alan is also an editor
of
Smalltalk Chronicles (http://www.smalltalkchronicles.net), is leads
the
open-source project "GLORP" for doing object-relational mapping
(http://www.glorp.org), and is co-author of the book "Mastering

Reminder:

The next meeting of the NYC Smalltalk Developer's Group will be held
next Thursday June 21st , 2001 at the IBM building on Madison and 57th
in Manhattan. The general meeting will start at 6:45pm and the main
presentation will start at 7pm and close at 8pm.

Topic:

Distributed Pluggable Services with OpenTalk

Speaker:

Charles A. Monteiro

Abstract:

This presentation will demonstrate a simple but flexible pluggable
services framework which leverages off VisualWorks distributed
computing framework OpenTalk. Said framework will allow for:

Registration of a service with a specified service interface

Binding of a service provider to a specified service with ensuring of
interface adherence by the service provider

capability of dynamic discovery and bind of services

capability of dynamically switching the service provider of a given
service

One of the demo examples will illustrate the notion of distributed MVC
i.e. exposing the model in a MVC triad as a distributed service which
can then be accessed by other V-C pairs on different nodes on the
network. This is accomplished without "hacking" the standard widget
setup in VW.

The presentation will also consist of the use of two networked
notebooks in order to make things more fun.

This meeting is open to the general public.

Hi folks,

What's the current domain hosting NY STUG's Web site?
I tried nysmalltalk.org this afternoon and the browser
(and, of course, associated infrastructure) couldn't find
it.  Is the server down?  Are you between hosting companies?

I ask in part because I was looking for a link to place to
it this afternoon, in part because if it fit, I could
host the site on some spare space I rent?  At least I'd
be willing to host some pages.  I've got a 200 MB deal
with my hosting company and I don't use it all.

Let me know,

The NYC Smalltalk Developer's Group will hold its next meeting on
thursday May 17th at the IBM Building on Madison and 57th.

Agenda

6:30 to 7:30

Extending NamingService

Charles A. Monteiro will demonstrate extensions to NamingService
which allow for enforcement of the service "interface" during
binding, dynamic handling of the regitered service, lookup of a
service by interface and the general usefulness of a "service
registry" even if not in a distributed environment.
This is not meant to be just a "demo" but rather a means of
generating discussion on the subject of "loosely coupled
services" "service oriented architectures" etc.

7:30 to 8:30
IBM Web Services

Tim Bedard and Mark Weitzel of the IBM Smalltalk Product Team will
discuss IBM Smalltalk's implementation of Web Services as well as
discuss future product direction including the future of ENVY.

Out meetings are opened to the general public.

Presenter: Charles A. Monteiro/ OCIT

I will be presenting WaveTags an extension to my ST tag framework
(TagWorks) . WaveTags comprise a set of xml based custom tags (a la
jsp
spec) which along with extensions to the VisualWave framework/IDE
allow for
the design of the user interface to a VisualWave app to be done in
standard
html editors and IDE's such as Homesite , Dreamweaver etc. The
designer
instead of using the customary html tags for the various form
entities specifies
the appropriate custom wave tag.
for example instead of:
<input  type="text" name="customerAge" >
use:
<wave:inputField model="customerAge"  isReadOnly="true" />

The html document in essence becomes the "windowSpec".

The marriage of custom tags and a rich presentation framework such as
VisualWorks along with the robust web management functionality
provided by
VisualWave entail clear advantages over the current JSP/ EJB
technologies
available.

If anybody cares to discuss the above assertion please let us know
your
thoughts by posting to the thread started in comp.lang.smalltalk with
the same
subject line as this post and please do stop by at our meeting
January 18th if in
the NYC area.

thanks

David Hasegawa who is spearheading the Ernst & Yound involvement in
Smalltalk Solutions 2001 has requested for input from our membership.
Please provide input on issues such as:

tutorials
workshops
demos
birds of a feather sessions

Keep in mind that the conference should also be considered as an
opportunity for Smalltalkers do discuss how we can promote Smalltalk
better i.e. Smalltalk Solutions should not just be technical in
nature.

I'll start the ball rolling by the following suggestion:

Invite at least 3 journalist from the IT trade press to come to
Smalltalk Solutions. Pay for their travel and accomodations. Create a
well thought out press kit which points out ST advantages, success
stories etc, the financial stability of players like Cincom, the
commitment of players like Ernst & Young etc. Provide them with the
press kits so that they can take them home and think. Arrange for a
guided tour at the conference and then of course let them roam freely.
Obviously, this assumes an oustanding content at the conference. Use
monies from the STIC budget. The expense is well worth it.

Any input for David should be sent to the following address:

david.x.hasegawa@...

Please take the time from your busy schedules to at least provide one
suggestion.

thanks

Charles
