Just wanted to send out word to all alumni that the newest 'Online' version of
the National Youth Science Camp Alumni Association Newsletter is now ready for
viewing. You can access it via the following link:
http://www.nyscaa.org/news/2009/2009_07

We would also encourage you to just in general 'peruse' the NYSCAA Web site at:
http://www.nyscaa.org - and especially to take a few minutes to fill out a
biographical update form at:
http://www.nyscaa.org/bioupdate
(since we haven't heard from several of you in recent years). We especially want
updated information for the upcoming 'Online Alumni Directory' - something we
have been promised by the NYSCAA officers and board since 1998 - but which the
current group is finally making a reality (we will be 'testing' this
password-protected directory in the next few weeks - and should have it up and
running in a couple of months).

We also want to start planning now for the BIG '50th Anniversary' Reunion in
2013. The 2009 Reunion is August 20-23 in Portland, Oregon. More info at:
http://www.nyscaa.org/events/reunion2009
If you are in the area, stop by for an hour or two (or a day or two). The 2010
Reunion will be somewhere in the Northeast next August. We are currently looking
at the area around Boston or possibly Providence, Rhode Island.

There is also a growing NYSC presence on both Facebook (http://facebook.com) and
LinkedIn (http://www.linkedin.com). There are no fewer than 29 separate NYSC
'groups' (for individual alumni years) on Facebook (along with two general 'all
years' NYSCAA groups). We know, we know ... like most of you, we had the
impression that we were too old for Facebook ... but it really is a good tool
for connecting with old friends. Do a Facebook search for NYSC and your year, or
National Youth Science Camp to find these groups. And LinkedIn works in this
regard also.

Hope this finds everyone happy and healthy. Take care ...

Hello All,

The Foundation and the NYSC Alumni Association will jointly host the third
Regional Science Symposium in Atlanta, GA, to stimulate interest in youth
science education and social interaction among NYSC alumni and others from the
corporate and philanthropic community. The Symposium will start with a reception
at 6:00 PM followed by dinner and a lecture on sustainable energy by HP inventor
and professor Dr. David Hackleman (NYSC OR 1969). I will also provide a brief
report on the NYSC and the Foundation's other programs and plans, including the
development and construction of the National Center for Youth Science Education.

I hope that you will consider attending the Symposium, and if you know anyone
from the corporate or philanthropic communities who might be interested in the
important work of the Foundation, please consider inviting them as our guest. If
you are interested, please send a RSVP to Ms. Laine Lybeck at rsvp@... by
May 14th. Please include in the RSVP your name and the name of any guests that
will be attending with you.

The International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is also taking place this
week. If you would like to be a judge or volunteer please see the website at
http://www.intelisef2008.org. Dr. David Hackleman has been a judge before and
will be at the Fair for the week, if you have any questions about this, he would
be happy to answer any questions you may have. If you would just like to visit
the Fair there will be a public visitation on Thursday May 15 from around 10-2
pm! Let me know if you have any questions.

I hope that you are doing well. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Folks: I'm planning to leave the Linus Pauling Chair at OSU this next year.
When I accepted, I
said only 5 years, and that's my plan…I hope! As such, I'd be delighted to

are chemically

Greetings NYSC Alumni,

I invite you to send in nominations (for yourself or others) for NYSCAA
officer positions. The following positions are open:

President-Elect (3 year term; one year as President-Elect, one year as
President, one year as Past-President)

Treasurer (1 year term)

Secretary (1 year term; the incumbent and excellent Terran Lane has
already accepted a nomination)

Member of the Board of Advisors (2 spots available; 3 year term)

More information can be found at:
http://www.nyscaa.org/about/officer_duties.html

Also, I invite you to save the dates August 10-13, 2006 for our next
annual alumni reunion, in St. Louis Missouri. We will be staying at the
Parkway Hotel http://www.theparkwayhotel.com/ and have reserved two
sets of rooms -- "standard" rooms for $109 a night, or "executive" rooms
on their club floor which include breakfast for $119 a night. Rooms
have 2 queen beds and can easily sleep up to 4 people per room.

We will have registration information online at http://www.nyscaa.org/
as soon as possible. There will be a registration fee (hopefully $100
or less, especially for students - we're still working out the details)
that will include use of hang-out suite, conference rooms, and meeting
rooms; breakfast, sandwich lunch, and snack foods; admissions to most if
not all activities; and Saturday dinner (hopefully also Friday dinner).

Basic outline of the reunion:
Thursday - arrive midday, gather in suite, dinner unplanned or picnic
(TBD), probably an optional organized evening activity (such as
attending 7 Brides for 7 Brothers at the Muny).
Friday - visit area attractions, including the Zoo, Museums. Casual
dinner (hopefully included in package price).
Saturday - morning NYSCAA annual meeting, afternoon seminars, evening
banquet (or at least more formal dinner).
Sunday - Some optional organized morning activity, plan to depart in the
afternoon if possible.

Go ahead and start planning travel and hotel arrangements, and keep an
eye on http://www.nyscaa.org/ and your mailbox for more details! Feel
free to email me at jkl-nysc@... or IM me at jklGoDuke with
questions.

Regarding passing of the Rev. Stacy Grosscup:

Sorry to report to folks that the Reverend Stacy Grosscup - a longtime NYSC
presenter (famous for his aerial 'instinctive' archery show) passed away last
Sunday (Sept 18) while recovering from open-heart surgery - he was 84. Those
of you from the early and middle years of camp (1960's, 70's, 80's) and a few
years in late 1990's might remember his homespun humor and buckskin clothing
along with his displays of shooting targets out of the air with a bow and arrow
(including frisbees and an aspirin).
Stacy is one of 45 archers in the archery hall of fame, was a devoted
scholar of native americana, and a former Navy frogman.

Fair winds and following seas, Stacy

It's not to late to come to the National Youth Science Camp Alumni Reunion
in Washington, DC. Though the Reunion dates of August 11 - 14, 2005, are
approaching very quickly you can still join in.

We have some special events available - a Segway tour of town,
behind-the-scenes looks at Smithsonian facilities - and, of course, our
usual, unique brand of camaraderie.

I tend to be chronically late in committing to these things so I know that
there are probably several like me out there. C'mon! Visit the Alumni
website at http://www.nyscaa.org to register or you may drop us a note at
reunion2005@... to let us know you are coming, to ask questions, or
to look for new morning routines.

We have rooms available at the the Best Western Key Bridge
http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/productInfo.do?propertyCode=47096
for those coming in from out of town. We also hope that plenty of you
folks in the DC Metro area will come by to visit us.

We Look Forward to Seeing You at the Reunion!

- Doren Burrell, Staph 79-84, and the 2005 Reunion Team.

[Message from David Hackleman, Reunion 2003 Coordinator]

The 40th Reunion of the National Youth Science Camp is July 3-6, 2003
at Snowshoe, West Virginia. For more information, please go to the
Web site at http://www.nyscaa.com. So far, we've got a pretty good-sized
group on the way to West Virgina for this event ... but to make it even
more special, you need to attend! Friends and family are welcome!

Folks from both 1963 and 2002 have already registered, so we are
guaranteed of having the first and latest camp represented. We will be
visiting NYSC 2003 and other experiences while at the reunion. Don't
forget to bring your musical talent and instruments!

Mention the special code "STAPH" on your registration form to waive the
late registration fee; and while we could really use the late registration
surcharge, it is voluntary.

If you have any questions or are interested in coming, please email the
reunion organizers at reunion2003@... or call David Hackleman at
(541) 745-7121 in Oregon.

Hope to see you at the reunion!

David Hackleman (Oregon 1969 delegate)
