this group is one of the many flowering around Auckland,In this group one has red fruit on it at present.Wether seed is viable i dont know as the ones i have picked up in past have failed to germinate
this was planted in memory of Noel Scotting. Its trunk is getting very fat.The grower who supplied this one has some of the same vintage still in pb95 bags
Lots of people want to get rid of their palm(s) when they get over
head height because it looks too big or it's touching the house. If
they would just leave it and maybe trim the ends of the fronds for a
few years they would have a magnificent established specimen they can
walk under and which gives their property a bit of mature presence.

about 12yrs back I brought 8 of these in pb2 off Bryan Laughland. These were a rare find them days and was about the time trade me appeared but i wasnt online myself. This year the first one has flowered but it was not the biggest one.The biggest is in more shade and 1.5m of trunk but the flowering one has only a few rings of trunk but in high light so it would seem light is more important to flowering than trunk size
while having a look round today I came across this pot of kentiopsis which is dated August 08.These wouldbe the remainer of what didnt get sent out of seedbank so guess wouldbe 50 of the 100seed.They are still germinating near 4yrs after recieving
Looks like between $5,000 and $10,000 down the drain. Ron Dykman
specialised in these, and has paid this sort of money. He was driving
past the Devonport Naval Base when a contractor was cutting down the
large one they had on Calliope Rd about seven years ago and
enlightened the poor fellow what he had just thrown away.
this one is opp Craigavon park and has been struggling to survive for 6plus months now

Out and about today I saw some Majestic palms flowering. Has anybody on this group seen viable seed set in NZ?? I have seen Ravenea glauca set seed in NZ. Just curious as these have been commercially available for much longer.
It takes two to Tango with this genus.....

Actually it got sick some years ago, a few trunks started looking
ropey, there was no spray at that time as far as I could tell, maybe
they had covered up the trunks a bit when making that sportsfield or
screwed up the drainage some other way. Normally these can take a bit
of rough treatment.
I use to collect seed off this clump for a number of years but in the last 6 months its gone like that but other things around it look ok.People retrieving balls from amongst it use to complain about the spines. There is a bit of a waterway down there. The phoenix 100m from that one still looks perfect

Not sure who will want an tonne of seed for sowing but I bought myself some
Caryota urens syrup from the Indian supermarket the other day and can report
that it is delicious. The proprietor told me that it's made from the seeds
which is surprising given their caustic qualities!

I have yet to find any fruit that has stung my skin from a Caryota, although I have only handled seed from a limited number of species. Colin said that the Wood Pigeons eat his, so they can't be too toxic.
