Yes - we're wrapping up the Code Reading book at this meeting.

I suppose we should start making a formal decision on the next
book. I'm fine with Meszaros' "xUnit Test Patterns" but want to
hear if anyone else has any other suggestions. If we do decide
to cover "xUnit Test Patterns" we'll probably tackle parts 1 & 2
in depth, and then skim part 3.

I've been lurking on the sidelines for a long time, but would definitely bee interested in participating in discussing this book. Pre-ordered my copy back in January and just got it about 2 weeks ago. (Got it a week after Amazon said it would be delayed again till August.) Was planning to finish my current book and start in on it this weekend.

We're still a few meetings away from jumping to a new book but don't have one
lined up as yet. I think this title was floated earlier but Martin Fowler just
had an entry on his blog:

"Last week I got the newest book in my signature series: xUnit Test Patterns by
Gerard Meszaros. I've been working with Gerard with it on and off for a couple
of years, so I'm fairly familiar with its contents, but somehow seeing the
physical copy gave me quite a shock. Somehow it hadn't dawned on me how big the
book was - 883 pages, easily the biggest book in my series.

On the whole I'm not keen on big books, I was very proud of keeping UML
Distilled so small. A book this big scares me, how will I ever get time to read
it?

But xUnit Test Patters isn't as scary as it looks, because it's actually two
books in one set of covers. In this it follows a style I also used in P of EAA.
The first book is a narrative book, designed to be read "cover to cover". The
narrative book is something small enough to be digestible, in xUnit Test
Patterns it's 181 pages, 106 in P of EAA. The second book is reference material,
which is designed not be be read cover to cover (although some people do) but
instead to be dipped into when needed. The idea is that you read the narrative
book to get a good understanding of the field, then put it on your shelf so it's
handy to grab when you need to delve into the reference section."

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0131495054

Any interest in covering the first part of this one in detail and then skimming
the reference material portion?

maybe, but let me try.

problem: write a nice slide show/picture collection viewer/mangler
with the ability to add attributes to pictures (i.e. crop, zoom,
wife, kids, favorite, reject, etc.).

seems like there are at least two (2) basic types:

          1) just the image files in this here directory in their
normal sort order.
          2) an arbitrary ordered list of absolute path names.
          3) maybe something like all the favorite wife pictures or
combinations/filters of other stuff.

this was my n'th try at this, so i had: a slide show interface, and
abstract base class that implemented the interface and extended
observable with most of the work being done in the abc, two small
concrete guys that were basically FromADirctectory and
NotFromADirectory, and a factory

testing involved hitting the file system like file.exists() and
filndilesInThisDirThatLookLikeImages(). and since i had a hierarchy
of test classes to test the above, i was hitting the file system in
an @BeforeClass in *all* of these.

paul said something like: abstract the file system you dummy! (he
didn't say dummy, but maybe he should have).

turned out that adding a boolean isMock to the abc's ctor, adding a
extra ctor to the concretes for this, and guarding a few of the
if(!file.exists()) thow's with !isMock was easy and looks fairly
clean. so i will only have to rattle the disk in a very few cases.

thanks

paul, your suggestion tonight was very helpful. caused me to add a
boolean isMock to the ABC which extends observer and implements the
slide show interface. the ABC does most of the work in most cases.
moved some stuff that did i/o to the factory.

Let's face it, <http://www.junit.org/>JUnit is the most widely used
(unit-) testing tool in the Java world. There are other powerful test
frameworks out there, such as <http://testng.org/>TestNG (which is
very comprehensive), but they've never enjoyed the broad acceptance
JUnit has. With version 4, Kent Beck and Erich Gamma introduced the
first significant API changes in the last few years. When the first
release candidate was available back in 2005, you could hardly use it
in a productive working environment due to the lack of tool support
at that time. By now, most build tools and IDEs come with support for
JUnit 4, so it's about time to give it a try. This article describes
what's different compared to JUnit 3.8.x. ...
