Re: [oil_from_algae] RE: the future of Fuel

They still have kept the formula to coca-cola secret. The formula for swiss chocolate is secret. Heck, the formula for sharpening swiss army knives is secret.

Why would Valcent show everything and make their investments worthless? There is an Interview with Dr. Kertz coming up on a new TV show called Brink on the Planet Green channel which is part of the Discovery Channel Network. They showed a teaser of it on Friday night at 7 and 10 pacific time. And you see Dr. Kertz drinking down a small beaker of his algae.

Without giving the farm away, what could he show us, that would convince us? A website where he was offering a gallon of algae oil available for sale a some price plus shipping and handling charges? Does anyone sell any fuel that way now?

I am going out on a limb here. but not very far, I think algae oil will be commercially available within five years. And I think the price will be around a US dollar a gallon. I also think all refiners will eventually switch to it because it is cleaner and cheaper to refine. We have OPEC over a barrel now. Yes they recently made a "symbolic" cut of a million barrels in output. That is not significant. I would be suprised if Valcent's biggest investors were'nt already in the oil business, since they already have the infrastructure and distribution networks.

Tony:
To be clear- I think oil from algae is a tremendously exciting concept.  However, my suspicions are raised by claims like Valcent's of 100,000 gallons of fuel-grade oil per year per acre with minimal water input.  To me, it does not make sense that they are searching for investors if they really had this technology functioning.  I just punched in "El Paso, acre" into ebay and found several plots available for less than $1000/acre.  Valcent presents their plastic serpentine algae grower thing as the star of their videos, but I've not seen any details on how to go from green water to useful fuel.  Growing algae by the ton may be useful for many purposes, but I am still scratching my head with respect to how to make an useful oil-equivalent fuel from it.

best regards,
