Of course, those are not quick questions. :) You might want to take a look at
the archives here, because there has been a lot of information posted over the
years on these topics!
I have a question for you...how on earth did the group get 5000 members without
doing something right already? One of the problems you might be having is that
the sheer number of members is too large for people to have a real feeling of
community. Research shows that a group of about 200 is about the maximum who
will participate actively in any group.
Have you considered creating sub-groups based on special interests? I was in a
very effective association community that did that, and the participation picked
up immediately. People were able to find the discussions or other members they
were interested in participating with and ignore the rest. Something for you to
consider. :)
