Lithium Acquires Community Moderation Know-how from Keibi Technologies
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/community_platform_creator_lithium_acquires\
_moderation.php

"Today, Lithium Technologies, a major provider of enterprise community
platforms, announced their acquisition of Keibi Technologies,
developer of automated content discovery, analysis, and moderation for
online communities. While Keibi may not be a particularly large
addition to Lithium, the melding of the two is something of a match
made in heaven.

When trying to develop healthy communities, such as the official
Barnes & Noble book clubs or SalesForce developer community it built,
Lithium should find Keibi's tools for wrangling user generated content
useful indeed.

The foremost use of Keibi's technology to date is in AOL-owned Bebo.
Since being founded in 2006, it received $5 million in series A
funding from Hunt Ventures and Catamount Ventures. Lithium is
considerably older, with its own blog and forum-centric offering
having been in the market since 1999."

In the late 1990s, I co-wrote The Virtual Volunteering Guidebook with Susan
Ellis. It is a free manual to help organizations involve online volunteers, as
well as to use online tools to support all volunteers. I am currently revising
this Guidebook, and as part of my efforts, I've created an online survey I hope
you will consider completing:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=8qNBlAysAcLk8JcRLjk5zg_3d_3d

I'm inviting anyone who has ever have been a volunteer, OR anyone who has ever
worked with volunteers in *any* capacity -- side-by-side or as a manager/primary
staff contact -- to complete this survey regarding the use of online tools to
support volunteers, to help me in my efforts to revise this guidebook.

By "volunteer", I mean someone who has provided some kind of work support
without pay to a nonprofit organization, community-based group (such as a
school), or government initiative focused on the community (such as a
city-sponsored park cleanup).

When talking about your experience, you can talk about more than one
organization. But remember that most questions relate to your experience only
regarding volunteering or working with volunteers.

Please note that this survey is NOT limited to any country or region.

I plan to share the results in the next edition of the Virtual Volunteering
Guidebook. To know when the guidebook is released, please subscribe to my blog
or to Tech4Impact (more details below).

Thank you for completing this survey! Feel free to forward this email to others
-- other staff members, volunteers you work with, colleagues outside your
organization, anyone!

My blog is here, and includes RSS subscription details:

Dear all,

I would like to contact you today about taking part in a research project on
learning processes and learning outcomes in online learning environments. I am
particularly interested how personal values (in terms of the value types of the
Schwartz Value Survey) influence these processes and outcomes, and how this
determines how effective the online learning activities and functions are for
the individual learner. These insights can then be used to improve online
learning, something from which you might benefit as well. Your participation in
this research is very valuable to me and to the outcomes of the research.

The survey is part of my PhD research conducted at the University of
Bedfordshire, UK. It should only take about 15 minutes to complete. Your name
will not be identified in the reporting of the results. Your responses will
remain confidential, and the data will only be used for research purposes.

As a 'thank you' for your participation, you can win one of two book vouchers
worth £25 each (€30) by submitting your e-mail address in the box at the end of
this survey.

You can access the survey here:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=b5GG62kCj5E_2fgGnwPkHIIw_3d_3d

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at
markus.haag@...

Thank you very much for your time and co-operation.

Kind regards,

hi im jason - all the way from new zealand, also known as middle earth by JRR
Tolkien fans.

i manage and moderate a forum of about 5000 members (many members arent very
active - one of the things id like to work on!)

im currently in the process of selecting some forum members to be moderators

my questions are:

1 - what sort of guidelines should i have for moderators
2 - what sort of things can we do to encourage participation in the forum

if you can point me in the right direction for any or all of this info that
would be great, thanks!

Hi Jason,

Of course, those are not quick questions. :) You might want to take a look at
the archives here, because there has been a lot of information posted over the
years on these topics!

I have a question for you...how on earth did the group get 5000 members without
doing something right already? One of the problems you might be having is that
the sheer number of members is too large for people to have a real feeling of
community. Research shows that a group of about 200 is about the maximum who
will participate actively in any group.

Have you considered creating sub-groups based on special interests? I was in a
very effective association community that did that, and the participation picked
up immediately. People were able to find the discussions or other members they
were interested in participating with and ignore the rest. Something for you to
consider. :)

Best wishes,
Kaye Vivian

Hi and welcome Jason

re guidelines for moderators it could be useful for you to read this article by
Patrick O'Keefe: Develop Effective Forum Leadership as it talks about managing
moderators including what sort of guidelines and guidance they need:
http://www.sitepoint.com/article/develop-forum-leadership/

It can also be useful to have a set of 'contact templates' - basically templates
for contacting members who break the rules, or who need to educated about
certain things. It's often easier to have pre-agreed messages so you don't
depend on moderators, especially new ones, finding the right 'tone'.

Hope this helps
Monika

It is great to see a barcamp/unconference event make a real attempt at
virtual participation. Now all they need are virtual participants -
it is free, so you should join us and pass this along to others.

Go here and register as a virtual participant:
http://pcamp.eventbrite.com (this will get you into their Skype network
too)

Watch the "virtual room" session video webcasts (folks will be able to
use the Net to chat questions/comment in real-time) from here:
http://www.livestream.com/pcamp

Here is the schedule of webcast sessions and their leaders:

     http://mudball.net/pcamp09/schedule
Times are Eastern US. To convert use: http://tinyurl.com/pcamptimes

My Saturday session exploring ideas related to online participation in
neighborhoods is at 5 p.m. Eastern/10 p.m. UK/7 a.m. Sydney (Sun). We
will talk about these projects -
http://pages.e-democracy.org/Social_media_in_local_public_life - and
I'll disclose publicly for the first time some of my local
"Participation 3.0" ideas.

Most of the spontaneous session will be "open space style" and likely
generate lots of tweets you can watch here:
http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23pcamp09

Here are some of virtual presenters to check out:

MARK ELLIOTT, COLLABFORGE

At CollabForge, Dr. Elliott has led several successful public
engagement projects for government agencies and NGOs in Australia.
These include 2008’s Future Melbourne project, the world’s first city
plan to be developed in a wiki. His methods are based on his
pathbreaking doctoral research, in which he developed a comprehensive
framework for understanding mass collaboration. More about Mark
Elliott.

Mark will lead a presentation on engaging citizens in collaborative
planning and policy-making using participatory tools and methods.

STEVEN CLIFT, e-DEMOCRACY.ORG – {virtual presenter}

Steven Clift, founder of e-democracy.org, is a pioneer of online
participation in democracy. Starting with the world’s first election
information website in 1994 in Minnesota, today e-democracy hosts
local issues forums in 15 communities across three countries.

Steven will host two virtual sessions at PCamp. The first is an open
brainstorm on building online participation at the neighborhood level.
The second is an extended Q&A e-democracy’s 15 years of experience,
tailored to participants who are new to the field.

MARY JOYCE, DIGIACTIVE

Mary Joyce is the co-founder of DigiActive, an all-volunteer
organization facilitating grassroots digital activism, and was the
Manager of New Media Operations for Obama’s 2008 presidential
campaign. Her session, entitled “Citizen Participation in a Networked
World”, will explore the ways that citizens can influence policy based
on the collaborative powers of social media, working from
international examples. She will also join Gaurav Mishra in a session
discussing the efficacy of social media activism.

GAURAV MISHRA, VOTEREPORT.IN – {virtual presenter}

Gaurav Mishra is the founder of 20:20 Web Tech, Votereport.in, and a
leader in India’s Gov2.0 scene. Joining us all the way from India, he
and his partner Selvam Velmurugam (joining from Seattle), will give an
in-depth look at both the votereport.in project and the gov2.0
ecosystem in India. She will also join Mary Joyce in a session
discussing the efficacy of social media activism.

TIM HWANG, THE COOPERATION PROJECT

From 4Chan to Facebook, Tim is an expert on the intricate mechanics of
online participation. He now works as a researcher at the Cooperation
Project at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society. Tim is
also hilarious. He organizes ROFLcon.

He plans to speak about the potential for gaming open government data.

DEVENDRA KUMAR PUNIA, FORE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT – {virtual presenter}

Dr. Punia is an associate professor at the Fore School of Management
in New Delhi, India. He has been involved with e-government research
and practice for the last ten years. Recently, he led an e-governance
project in the revenue sector for the district administration. The
question of using open source versus proprietary software was dealt
with in a peculiar manner. Similar efforts in other states have
yielded varying results, and the feasibility and use of open source is
a big question mark for the citizen-oriented projects. Dr. Punia will
share his experience of leading an e-governance project using open
source software.

STEF VAN GRIEKEN, NEW VOTING FOUNDATION – {virtual presenter}

Picture 86Stef will give a presentation about the use of electoral
compasses to identify key candidates for parliament in the
Netherlands. The application matches candidates to voters based on the
party program’s and individual political views. The success of these
tools have been enormous in the Netherlands. Currently, for the
parliament elections about 65% of the Dutch used a tool to find their
favorite political party/candidate.

.
ED PASTORE, METAGOVERNMENT – {virtual presenter}
Picture 88Ed will deliver a talk entitled “Making Direct Democracy
Practical”. This presentation outlines the drawbacks of
representative democracy in various contexts; and explores the
historical criticisms of direct democracy, which has proven incapable
of supplanting representative systems. It then details several
emerging projects which are actively working to overcome the
limitations of direct (or otherwise more inclusive) democracy by
applying sophisticated web technologies. The finding is that
massively-participatory democracy is not only practical but most
likely inevitable.

JOHN DUMBRILLE, GREENSANDBOX – {virtual presenter}

Picture 89A former Greenpeace activist, John Dumbrille writes
technical documentation and presentation materials for MonkeyMedia
Software. This spring he co-founded bowegover.ning, a project for
transparent governance in his local community. In his talk,
“Unbundling Governance”, he will discuss the concept of
self-governance, and why an independent, grassroots approach is
important.

Hello all, and apologies for cross-posting and language-mixing :-).

This is a message for the Spanish complement that either lurks or participates
over here. I know there's several of us :-).

I'm running a survey to find out the way in which Spanish organizations are
making use of online communities. It's a bit of a first in this market,
especially with this focus, and I think the results should be quite relevant. So
I'd like to make sure that the survey participants comprise most of the Spanish
community facilitators or managers I can get a hold of :-).

Of course, I expect to write an English version of the main survey results.

And now let's get into the matter...

-----

http://emekaeme.wordpress.com/estudio-comunidades-online-2009/

partir de ahora, el interés de los resultados depende del número y calidad de
los participantes. Y creo que merece la pena.

Un saludo, y muchas gracias por vuestra ayuda,

Miguel

Greetings Everyone:

Jobs get posted here, so I thought I'd let you all know that I'm
looking for work.

I'm an experienced Community Moderator and Community Manager. I
describe myself as Community Evangelist & Social Media Enthusiast.
Like a lot of people doing this, I started as a volunteer, and I've
been doing it for 15+ years, possibly longer. I started getting paid
to do it about 7 years ago. I've been involved with forums, wikis,
live chat, etc.

I was laid off from a terrific gig in the UK where I was not only the
Community Manager, but also the Chief Blogger. I'm an experienced
journalist and web developer and actually suggested, birthed and
nursed their blog to life. It was especially fun because they make
animation software, and I'm a multi-award-winning filmmaker. After 18
months, they decided that they didn't need the position of Community
Manager (GO FIGURE!) and would have one of the co-founders handle my
duties in addition to his own. There was no problem with my work, in
fact, that was highly praised several times in writing. The decision
was purely an economic one. Their former CEO - they decided they
didn't need him either - is one of my references.

I live in Canada, and worked remotely, but was I really looking
forward to the start of my 'translantic commute' (happening more often
than people realize. I was born in UK, and can work in the EU. I've
also worked for remotely several companies in the States.

I have been keeping my eye on the various boards and lists, but if you
hear of anything, or have an opportunity for me, I'd be delighted to
hear from you.

Thank you!

>>But how are you supposed to write a job description for that? Doesn't it
sort of sound like you're hiring someone to goof off online all day? The
ReadWriteWeb report has a price tag, but it's well worth it if you're really
considering these issues.<<

This quote is what I hear time and time again, and it never ceases to
infuriate me. It sounds like the voice of the ignorant. I mean, every
profession that I can think of has someone that spends time DOING exactly
what it is that they are meant to represent. Is it the entire job? No. but
it should definitely be part of the job. How else will the professional know
what it is that is needed by their audience?

How many times is a lawyer reprimanded for being in court, practicing law
instead of sitting behind their desk studying it? How many marketing
executives are punished for attending a focus group? Anyway, I do believe
that it is high time more hiring managers understand that if they expect
their staff to report back on their public, the staff need to understand,
analyze and research said public.

My .02 cents. I think i'm ready for this holiday weekend, eh?

Dear all,

Please let me take this opportunity to thank those of you who have
completed my Internet survey on personal values and learning processes
and learning outcomes in online learning environments. I am still
looking for further respondents and if you haven't participated in the
survey yet, it would be great if you could complete it as this would be
essential for the outcome of my research.

I am particularly interested how personal values influence these
processes and outcomes, and how this determines how effective the online
learning activities and functions are for the individual learner. These insights
can then be used to improve online learning, something from which you might
benefit as well. Your participation in this research is very valuable to me and
to the outcomes of the research.

The survey is part of my PhD research conducted at the University of
Bedfordshire, UK. It should only take about 15 minutes to complete. Your name
will not be identified in the reporting of the results. Your
responses will remain confidential, and the data will only be used for
research purposes.

You can access the survey here:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=b5GG62kCj5E_2fgGnwPkHIIw_3d_3d

As a 'thank you' for your participation, you can win one of two book
vouchers worth £25 each (€30) by submitting your e-mail address in the
box at the end of this survey.

Thank you very much.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at

Are you an Internet leader? Is building social
community second nature to you? Do you

topic? Are you ready to work in a small, creative startup in NYC?

We need your help creating a new Site for a new

Subject: 10th Anniversary of OnlineFacilitation Yahoo Group Aug 12th - share your story
choconancy
Send Email Send Email

Greetings fellow online facilitators

Somehow I usually forget to mention that August 12th is the birthday of
this group, formed in 1999. Yup, 10 years old.

This year I need to pay attention. Ten years seems like an important
milestone, even though our community is quieter than in past years. Much
of our activity is now flung across diverse online media in blogs,
tweets and social networks. But I'm feeling a wind blowing, a wind that
has carried more interest in, and value of online facilitation, but also
a wind that says change is coming...

In past years, when asked for ideas of how to celebrate our anniversary,
we've had a few ideas here and there, but little traction. This year I'm
going to be bold and more definitive. I'm proposing two actions:

First: share your stories
I'm looking for your stories of online facilitation. You can post them
here, blog them and leave a link. Tag them onfac10 if you are using a
web medium that allows tags. If you tweet them out #onfac10 I'll try and
compile them all in a free, sharable e-book, so it would be great if you
put a creative commons license on material NOT sent via this group.

What kind of stories?

     * When you first "got" what it meant to facilitate online
     * When you or something someone else did to facilitate online made a
difference - how and wy
     * How you learned your most useful online facilitation practices
     * or any online facilitation story you like.

Lets try and get them up by August 12th and see what happens. Spread
the word.

Second: clean house
Here is the radical thing. I've talked about closing the group, but that
has never felt right. So I'm going to house clean.

After 10 years there are old inactive emails, etc. After September 1st
I'm going to begin to purge all the bouncing emails and all the people
who are on "read only on the web." I don't know about you, but I rarely
look at my group subs that are "read only on the web" simply because
there is too much. Thus, I suspect much of our membership is not even
engaged a tiny bit.

I'm sending this notice out as a special notice so ALL subscribers will
get it - even those who choose to read the messages just on the web or
via RSS. If you want me to keep you on, send me a direct email and I'll
not delete you (make sure you give me the email you use for your Yahoo
subs so I can find you). Some of you may choose to resubscribe. I 'll
send out an "all clear notice" when I'm done purging so you can do that.

I realize this is risky for those who have moved to reading the group
via RSS, but I can't discern this from the membership list.

I presume I'll make some mistakes. Some of you might get angry and I
apologize in advance. If someone has a brilliant idea about how to do
this in a better way, I'm open to suggestions. I just read about yahoo
updates -- maybe that is something.

But that wind -- its blowing!

Thanks

Nancy
