01a * Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

02 * Comodo Firewall
Free and fully-functional. The firewall is recommended for a broadband connection (DSL/Cable) even if you have a router because it has EXCELLENT outbound filtering. The default WinXP firewall is not as secure due to having minimal outbound filtering (the default WinVista/Win7 firewall is SLIGHTLY better). The anti-virus works well too, though it is no longer free. Can be set up as bundled (installs both) or unbundled (installs firewall only).

03a * Avast Free Anti-Virus
A very effective free anti-virus package, good basic protection. Requires annual registration, but otherwise fully functional with minimal resource use. The paid version is worth it, too. Current: v6

03b * Avira Anti-Virus
Another very effective free anti-virus package, also good basic protection. A bit mor obtrusive than Avast!, but otherwise fully functional with minimal resource use. The paid version is worthy, too. Their freely-downloadable bootable-CD "Rescue System CD" is very powerful—and it's updated up to three times a day.

03c * Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows
"Use Microsoft Security Essentials to guard against viruses, spyware, and other evil software. It provides real-time protection for your home or small business PCs. MSE is free (but your PC must run genuine Windows to install Microsoft Security Essentials) and we designed it to be simple to install and easy to use. It runs quietly and efficiently in the background so you don't have to worry about interruptions or making updates." Effective and completely free.

03d * Grisoft AVG Anti-Virus (free edition)
Another EXCELLENT virus checker and removal tool. Lower system overhead than Norton, but higher than some others. Updated often. The "Free AVG" link is is on the left side. Now with integrated spyware blocking and anti-phishing technology. These days, I prefer Avast! Current: v2012

04 * ERUNT -- XP Registry backup tool
Does a FULL backup of the Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7 Registry. Note that ERUNT works just fine under Windows Vista and Windows 7--just right-click the program icon and select "Run as Administrator". You can make this change permanent by right-clicking on the program icon and selecting the "Compatibility" tab, then checking the "Run as Administrator" box. Also includes NTRegOpt, an excellent Registry optimizer. Current: v1.1j

05 * XP Anti-Spy -- turn off the Microsoft "phone home" functions, and more
Did you know that Windows, by default, monitors your computer usage and reports back to Microsoft? Slow it down, at least, with this tool that edits the Registry to control many aspects of system behavior. Works for Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7 (like ERUNT, set "Run as Administrator" for Vista or Win7). Current: v3.98-1

08 * CCleaner -- formerly Crap Cleaner
Performs two functions well -- removes trash files from the system's hard drive(s) AND removes invalid entries from the Windows Registry. A little more intrusive than the "Glary Utilities"--but this is sometimes useful. Current: v3.13

Ad-blocking HOSTS file
A HOSTS file is an optional list which tells Windows which numerical address is associated with which URL. This file is a very simple hack which intercepts ad-server URLs and redirects them to non-existent numerical addresses.
