Folder 01 * Microsoft Office viewer utilities (free)
These are the free viewers for Microsoft Office formats. Install these after installing the LibreOffice or OpenOffice.org office suites for compatibility checking or reading files without the risk of accdentally editing them. After installation, be SURE to use "Microsoft Update" to get all the security patches and updates for these viewers, then install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats .

01c * Java Runtime Engine (JRE)
Java is a "glue" programming language, used by many programs, including LibreOffice, OpenOffice.org and Firefox. Current: v7.0.2 (1.7.0.2) and v6.30 (1.6u30). Note: v7 seems to be incompatible with the current releases of LibreOffice and OpenOffice.org due to application path issues.

02 * AbiWord word processor (GPL open source)
A stand-alone word processor. Lower resource usage than LibreOffice/OpenOffice.org, useful for older machines or less-demanding applications. Fast, flexible, reads and writes ODF and Microsoft formats. Now includes the Import-Export, Tools, and Dictionary plug-ins, as well. Cross-platform (Linux, Mac OS X). Current: v2.8.6 / beta v2.9.1

02a * LibreOffice — Office software suite (GPL open source)
An improved and preferred (in my opinion) fork of OpenOffice.org. It is a free replacement for MS Office--an integrated suite of applications consisting of a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation software, database, and a basic graphics application. It can read and write ODF and MS formats--and more, including the new "ends-in-x" OOXML formats. I recommend downloading the Java Runtime Engine separately (see item 01c). Cross-platform (Linux, Mac OS X). Current: v3.4.5

02b * OpenOffice.org — Office software suite (deprecated in favor of Libre Office)
A free replacement for MS Office--an integrated suite of applications consisting of a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation software, database, and a basic graphics application. It can read and write ODF and MS formats--and more, including the new "ends-in-x" OOXML formats. StarOffice is the commercial version. I recommend un-checking the JRE check-box and downloading the Java Runtime Engine separately (see next item). Cross-platform (Linux, Mac OS X). Current: v3.3.0

03 * EditPad Lite -- highly-configurable tabbed text-editor
"EditPad Lite is a general-purpose text editor, designed to be small and compact, yet offer all the functionality you expect from a basic text editor... EditPad Lite is free for non-commercial use." Useful. Beats "NotePad" by a mile; cut down from the "full" version, but NOT crippleware. v7.1.1
