Name Creator
01 * WinAmp 5.6 -- free music & video media player
Music-file player, one of the best of its type overall. MP3, WAV, MOD, MPEG & more. Many skins, plug-ins, and visual effects are available; like SHOUTcast, it's provided by AOL. A paid version is available with extra features. Current: v5.6

02 * StreamRipper -- record MP3 or OGG music streams to HD
This cross-platform utility rips MP3 or OGG music streams to your hard drive. SR can act as a WinAMP plugin for Windows or with a command-line interface under Windows or Linux. Bonus: from the command-line interface it can rip multiple streams simultaneously, limited only by available bandwidth. Available in most distro repositories. Current: v1.64.6

03 * VLC -- open-source media player
A good alternative to WinAmp -- another EXCELLENT player for streaming audio from SHOUTcast, IceCast, and others -- as well as playing DVDs and many video formats. Listed here because of its cross-platform availability -- including MS Windows, Linux, BSD and Apple OSX. Current: v1.0.0 (at last)

04 * IrfanView -- graphic file viewer and MORE
Mentioned here because the plug-ins support a broad variety of video- & sound-file formats in addition to it's graphics-file handling -- and because of its low resource overhead. While not my default media player, it's useful for quick checks. Be SURE to get the separate plug-ins file. Current: v4.25

05 * Audacity -- sound editor, free & open source
A great sound-file utility. Record/play sounds, convert LPs and cassettes to CDs, import/export WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files (it can use the LAME encoder as an add-on), and more. It keeps getting better and more useful. Current: v1.2.6 (stable) and v1.3.7 (beta, but it has useful improvements).

06 * EAC (Exact Audio Copy) -- stand-alone CD ripper
Not always the fastest ripper, but it can read CDs and correct errors that most other rippers choke on. Can be integrated with MP3 or OGG encoders such as LAME. Don't let its beta status put you off. Current: v0.99 prebeta 5

07 * LAME -- MP3 encoder and other high quality codec tools
"LAME Ain't an MP3 Encoder." The best MP3-compatible encoder, and it's FREE. Used by many programs (including WinAmp) or runs stand-alone with a command-line interface. Current: v3.98 -- this site also has many other useful sound-file utilities.

08 * InfraRecorder
"InfraRecorder is a free CD/DVD burning solution for Microsoft Windows. It offers a wide range of powerful features; all through an easy to use application interface and Windows Explorer integration." Works well with ImgBurn. Get the LAME plug-in separately. Current: v0.46.2.0
