Hello well I really don't see the need for converting text to mp3 but to
transfer to the roadrunner the protocol it uses seems to be a secret so
you need to use the software that comes with the roadrunner but it's very
easy to use anyway. with th enew windisk program transferring data to the
Blazie units should be easy even for th enevice.

I think that the ability to convert text to MP3 would be a valuable
utility or option for a reading system to have. I don't know if I
would use iut every day if at all, but it does have it's uses.
personally I would also like to see openbook directly interface with
a portable text reader like road runner or clone there of to transfer
text directly to other units. or even to directly send text to the
blazie note takers.

Claus,
All bugs reported prior to the "FINAL" release of OPENBook 5 during the beta
cycle do not need to be reported again. We always have a specific email
address during beta cycles for obvious reasons. The way that you report bugs
hasn't really changed is just that we had that specific email address to
report bugs during beta and now that it is no longer a beta and it's a final
release, we handle those through our technical support email address

be reported again to HJ? or are the bugs already beeing worked at

Hi,
I most definately would not want any minute of Freedom Technical support beeing
wasted on a feature like taking a file into mp3. mp3 has no real usage neither
for music not if you consider quality and not at all for reading out of text
because of the lack of any kind of structured reading!!

You can do that with a hadicassette and a patch cord. Adding MP3 player
support would be just another junk feature and would make things even worse
than they are now. There are a lot of us who have been waiting for note
taking ability and that should have come ahead of email and vibrating game
mouse support. So I certainly hope MP3 does not show up next in this
program.

Hi Claus,
The bug report email address used during the beta cycle doesn't apply any
longer.
Bugs or "suspected" bugs can be reported to support@... and they are
handled via an escalations procedure that we have in place. These
escalations go to our test and development department for review. Part of
the procedure includes receipt and status notification from the escalations

Subject: [users] Openbook 5 postrelease bugfixes
Hi,
From mails on this list about the bugs that has survived Openbook
5, I would like to add or rathre repeat the statement made by Jim
Fruchtermann early in the public beta, was that there would be a
another round of bugfixes after the release of Openbook 5 . And
that this fix would be free, like the 4.02 patch was free for all
Ruby users. What I would like to know is if we have to report bugs
that is not on the list of closed issues that was posted about a
week ago. I would also like to know if the bug report email address
that was announced with the public beta is still in use, or if we
should use other technical support mail addresses provided by
Freedom Scientific.

I even received this very same message twice. Could it be possible that
it's also coming from the old list as well? I don't really think so,
because I went into the properties of the message and it has just the new

I downloaded the demo of scan & read. Yuk, the ocr is porr and if you don't
like via voice, you will despise ms text to speech.
The very kewel feature of Scan & Read is the ability to convert to mp3, not
available in the demo though.
Arkenstone, any thoughts about adding this feature to openbook? It would be
very nice to be able to scan text books for students or business materials
for professionals and then dump them into your mp3 player for portible
listening.

Subject: [users] Openbook VS off the shelf ocr packages
Well, I'm throwing in the towel in my attempts to find another ocr
package. I'm still very irritated with some of the problems with Openbook
5. I will continue to push for bug fixes in a patch before we get charged
for another upgrade.
However, after comparing the usability and accuracy of Text Cloner, (and
Scan and Read from the Text Cloner folks) and Textbridge Pro Millennium
Version, with Openbook 5.0; I have to say that Openbook is the most
accurate and the most user friendly--not to mention the fastest (at least
on my system).
I'm a bit hesitant to send this because I'm still waiting on an answer as
to why I got the error message "An unnamed file has a bad format" which
has rendered a 181 page book that I scanned totally inaccessible. I
hesitate to do any more scanning until that is resolved. But, assuming it
gets resolved, Openbook does a much better job than the other software I
mentioned. Not only is it better for blind users, but my sighted wife
said it looks a whole lot better from a visual perspective than do the
others.
I hope the problems get resolved soon. I have lots of reading that has
been on hold for far too long.

Since I bought Ruby in August, my upgrade was free therefore worth the
money!!!
Luckily I haven't had the problems that some others have had with OpenBook
5 but I can't say it was a resounding success either.
I think the OCR may be a bit better (general impression since Ruby isn't
installed any more). The speech (Viavoice) is most definitely of poorer
quality than the version Ruby used. It also seems that the OCR is somewhat
slower when using the same engine (Caere) although this isn't too annoying.
I'm not sure what the upgrade cost for those who had to pay but I don't
think you'd be missing much if you stay with Ruby 4.02.

Hi,
From mails on this list about the bugs that has survived Openbook 5, I would
like to add or rathre repeat the statement made by Jim Fruchtermann early in
the public beta, was that there would be a another round of bugfixes after the
release of Openbook 5 . And that this fix would be free, like the 4.02 patch was
free for all Ruby users. What I would like to know is if we have to report bugs
that is not on the list of closed issues that was posted about a week ago. I
would also like to know if the bug report email address that was announced with
the public beta is still in use, or if we should use other technical support
mail addresses provided by Freedom Scientific.

Hello Listers.
Here we are in our new home.
I was scanning with the 30-day trial of Open Book 5.0 this afternoon, and
right in the middle of a scan, my computer rebooted. I am using windows 95
and a Pentium 333 with 64 k of memory. This is not the first time this has
happened to me. I would like to know from the list members whether this
should be reported as a bug, or whether it is just a coincidence. Has this
happened to anyone else?
Also, when I got the computer up and running again, I scanned the same
piece of paper I had been scanning when the computer rebooted, and at the
end of the scan, Open Book said "access denied". I had a little trouble
shutting down Open Book 5.0, and it closed out my JFW 3.7. Any feedback
would be appreciated.

I just went back to Ruby 4.02 because of all the problems in 5.0. I don't
plan on loading 5.0 until I hear from the users that the program is working
properly. By the way I beleive there is a bug in the find feature. In Ruby
4.02 I can type in a word and go down through a document until I find what I
am looking for. But in 5.0 the word is constantly changed in the find box
depending what word the cursor is sitting on. Which means I have to
constantly retype in the word over and over. It drives me crazy.

I am looking on ebay and this scanner loooks tempting. But it looks like an
all in one scanner such as copier fax and all that. Would that be easy to
use with the arkenstone software and also which byt color should i get and
also what dpi or does it really matter.
thanks
Also does it matter ir its usb or just a parallel interface?
thanks

Hello;
I have made a few scripts that make OpenBook5.0 more compatible with the
Jaws normal reading key strokes on the number pad. You can down load these
scripts from Dennis brown's blind programing web site. The direct url is:
ftp://ftp.blindprogramming.com/pub/jfw/openbook.zip
These scripts can be placed into the Jaws37\settings\enu folder. Before you
do this be sure to copy your existing OBU.JCF file to another folder.
I hope these scripts work as well for you as they do for me. If you don't
like the results delete the scripts and replace the OBU.JCF file, which you
copied as instructed above.
OpenBook.txt
The scripts in this set were developed using JFW 3.7 and Open Book
5. Their purpose is to make Open book number pad read as it does in all
other windows applications. It is not perfect, but it is a definite
improvement. These scripts do the following:
1 Keep the Jaws synthesizer active.
2 Shut off the Open Book speech.
3 make the number pad keys available for use by JFW.
4 Make the following keys work, as you would expect them to with JFW in a
window application.
The Enter key on the number pad.
The Delete key on the number pad.
The Right arrow on both the number pad and the 4 pack.
The Left arrow on both the number pad and the 4 pack.
The F10 key opens the menu bar as in other applications.
These cripts work nearly perfect using Double Talk as the JFW synthesizer
and ViaVoice as the OpenBook default. When I use them with Eloquence as
the JFW synthesizer, I occasionally have to press control + F5 to stop
double speech. I have not tried them with "no speech" as the Open Book
default, but I can only assume they would work.
