Jim, VAG began switching to its extension of KW2000 in the early 00s. You can encounter VAG "mixed" vehicles with some ECUs supporting KW1281 and some KW2000....

Jim, I can't know for sure what he meant, but I read it as the physical layer is the same as KWP1281. The signaling (voltage levels and timing) is the same...

ELM327 is a multistandard OBDII interface chip , wich is able to read KWP200 data, your problem may be in the software not suitable for certain...
