Good morning everybody!
I think I've finally got the new RSS-based updating method worked out
and ready for "brave souls" to try it out.
Before you try anything new like this, especially something that could
potentially change any part of your OPML Editor system (like the
updating code) please MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF THE OPML FOLDER.
I put that last part IN CAPS because I didn't want you to miss it. ;-)
Okay, assuming you have a backup copy...
1. Download the following script to your desktop computer.
http://tinyurl.com/2ymjvp
2. Launch the OPML Editor.
3. Choose Open from the File menu, select the file downloaded in step 1.
4. Click on OK to all confirmation prompts.
5. A window should open with a script called workspace.installer.
6. Feeling brave? Have a backup copy of your OPML Folder?
7. Click Run.
That's it. If the script ran without error, you now have the new
updating code installed, and all your OPML Editor roots will be
updated using the new method.
For most people that will mean these three files:
1. opml.root
2. dotOpml.root
3. newsRiver.root
The first two are updated when you choose the Update opml.root command
from the File menu. newsRiver.root is automatically updated every time
you do a news scan, which happens once an hour if it's enabled.
After I get a sense that this change has worked for a few people, I'll
post some tests you can do to be sure that it's REALLY working. Once
that happens, I'll prepare new downloads that incorporate this code,
and also fix the crashing bug on Vista and IE7, and then recommend the
update for non-brave souls.
Please, post problems in 1-2-3 format. 1. I did this. 2. I expected
this to happen. 3. This is what actually happened. That keeps the
process brisk and results-oriented.
Hope it all works! ;-)
