What does Hoist Do, Exactly?   Message List

RE: [opml-newbies] What does Hoist Do, Exactly?

Hi Lisa,

You use Hoist to reduce the outline view (number of levels) of what you are looking at.

If you have an outline with several levels, you can hoist a lower level and only view that level on down. This helps to view a portion of an outline without all the levels which can be distracting to the eye.

However, there is a caution:

If you save an outline while it is hoisted, it will not save any of the hidden portions of the outline.

OUCH!!!

To make sure that everything in the outline is retained when it is saved to disk, you should use the Outline, De-Hoist All command before saving it.

Hope this helps,

The Wilk

Subject: [opml-newbies] What does Hoist Do, Exactly?

Hi, All,

I'm hacking away with my text machete on the OPML editor manual today
(and I want to thank Tom Simpson for de-breaking my outline, which made
it possible to get a lot of work done today! Thank you, Tom!).

Anyway, I'm going through each command on the Outliner menu and messing
around with test outline to see exactly how each command works.  I must
admit I'm completely puzzled by Hoist.  What do you use it for?

Lisa

David, that's a bug, and should be treated as such. I just investigated, and the fix is going to require a kernel modification, and not a small one. (Basically...

Dave -- I vote for anything that protects the data, including a possible back up when an outline is hoisted (with luck, not on its own petard). Staci...

Good news -- I found a way to save the state of a the hoist over a save and get all the data out, without any kernel mods. Is that enough jargon for you? Is...
