Re: [oregongrapes] Welcome to OregonGrapes!

Oregon actually has a warmer, drier climate, at least during the
growing season, than Germany. Humidity during the growing season is
quite low, so that there are no major fungal diseases, and only powdery
mildew. In the wet, cool fall weather botrytis can be a problem on
vinifera grapes, but most hybrids either ripen early enough to miss the
wet weather, or can resist the disease. Saturday through next
Tuesday, maybe longer, we are being told to expect temperatures in the
middle to high 90's, with the possibility of 100 to 104 possible on one
or two of the days.

Be sure to go sample some muscadines while you are in Atlanta. You'll
either love or hate them.

Welcome to this new oregon grape growing group!

or so in Germany.
Oregon growing is probably quite a bit like the cool wet German
weather but a bit warmer.

I'm now growing grapes in Atlanta and currently have Long John,
Munson and Delicatessen in pots and have a few Champanel cuttings
hopefully on the way. Next year I hope to be able to get many more
varieties that have a chance to make it in Georgia or in states a
bit further north from here. I have areas of full sun as well as
partially shaded and completely shaded areas to keep the vines in
pots until I have a permanent place to start a small vineyard of
hopefully 100 to 400 vines again as I had in Germany.(perfect
example of one of my run-on sentences....teachers used to nail me
about these!)

I hope to at least be able to hang around and try to help any new
growers here with basic questions until a few more experienced grape
growers from Oregon join us.

State groups tend to start out slowly but after a group reaches
about 10 members or so, it tends to grow rapidly.

Hope to hear a bit about your grape growing experience in Oregon and
to meet other vitoregonians here!
Mike
