Call for White Papers to NASA's Universe Roadmap Committee
The Universe Division of NASA's Science Mission Directorate is currently
developing its triannual Universe Roadmap, which documents the science
goals of the Division for the next 25 years and identifies the suites of
missions and technologies which are needed to reach these goals. In this
Call to the community we are soliciting 2-page white papers to provide
input to the Universe Division advisory subcommittees which are responsible
for the Universe Roadmap (the Origins Subcommittee and the Structure and
Evolution of the Universe Subcommittee, soon to be combined into a single
Universe Subcommittee).
The Universe Roadmap is just one of three roadmaps that will be completed
in the next several months for the Universe Division. The Universe Roadmap
will be a traditional (or "legacy") roadmap, informed and written in the
same manner as previous roadmaps of the old Office of Space
Science: Earlier roadmaps, NAS/NRC-sanctioned priorities, and community
input are integrated by the roadmap committee (composed of advisory
subcommittee members and additional community members) and approved by the
subcommittee(s) before being adopted by the Division. There are two
additional Strategic Roadmaps being directed by NASA that pertain to the
Universe Division: one focused on Advanced Telescope Searches for
Earth-like Planets, and the other focused on the Origin, Evolution,
Structure and Destiny of the Universe. These latter two are being
developed by a process distinct from that for the Universe Roadmap; a
community call for white papers to these latter roadmaps was issued in
November 2004 and is not being repeated here. This Call is for white
papers to inform the Universe Roadmap only.
The format of the white paper should be:
"Response to Call for White Papers for Universe Roadmap"
Title of Proposed Mission or Technology Development
Authors of the White Paper and their Institutions (the first author
will be considered the communicating author)
Science Goals of Mission or Technology Development
Description of Mission (if appropriate)
and/or Description of Required Technology Development Program
The text should be limited to two pages (no smaller than 11pt font) and
submitted by email to both Drs. Eric Smith and Michael Salamon of NASA's
Universe Division, at
Eric.P.Smith@... and
Michael.H.Salamon@.... The deadline for submission is February 17, 2005.
