Vernal Pools are temporary wetlands that are critical habitats for specialized wildlife in Ontario, including the nationally threatened Jefferson Salamander (Ambystoma jeffersonianum). In Ontario, significant vernal pools are being lost as a result of urban sprawl, wetland loss, and deforestation. The Ontario Vernal Pool Association is an organization that promotes the education, study, conservation and protection of vernal pools and their associated flora and fauna in Ontario, Canada.
