Hi all
I'm Andrew, otherwise known as the man with the cat [See my picture],
and I'm back.
I posted a few entries last year, then found myself too busy with a
newborn baby, work pressure ..etc..etc.. to participate.
Well, the baby is older, but even more troublesome, if that's
possible. Nevertheless, I realise the need to become more conversant
with ICT, so I'll try to spare some time to peruse and contribute to
this Group. I hope to learn a lot more.
I wanted to share with you my first atempts in introducing
Voicethread to my classes.
Voicethread, is a slideshow which anybody can create with images from
own camera or images from the Internet or even screen captures saved
in Paint (that is how I did the title slides from PPoint).
You can keep Voicethreads public (anybody can read it) and private.
I made mine public and allowed anybody to add a comment. Comments can
be made in text and voice. Voice was not working for me at MUELC so I
a will be working with IT to have set ups changed.
This Voicethread is from DEP2A and follows on on our lesson on the
importance of the knowledge of culture in listening and reading
comprehension (we looked than closely ant Waltzing Matilda).
http://voicethread.com/view.php?b=3275
And here is the Waltzing Matilda link with exercises
http://members.optushome.com.au/renatachylinski/matilda/index.htm
There are also cool versions of Matilda on You tube.
Cheers

Guys
Check out:
http://splendidspeaking.podomatic.com/
Those interested in podcasting:Podomatic is a free tool for that,as you
may remeber from my presentation last year.
I could not play these podcasts, though - are you experiencing the same?
Renata
One of Webheads suggested
http://voicethread.com/view.php?b=409>
which is a"an online media album that allows people to make comments,
either audio or text, and share them with anyone they wish. A
VoiceThread allows an entire group's story to be told and
collected in one place. "Creating VoiceThreads will always be free for
educators and the students that fill their classrooms. This includes
publishing them on the web, and sharing them with the child's friends
and family. It's really important to us that there are no barriers; no
cost to fully participate, no software to buy or download, and no
contracts to manage."
I am going to explore it soon and compare with other tools for digital
storytelling. Will let you know how I go.

Just as we are unfurling the OZCALL wiki here is a document which
should help us in our understanding of this medium:

(Thanks evonline members for posting it to your group :)

Just to let you know that an OZCALL wiki has been created at:
http://ozcall.wikispaces.com/
You are welcome to join wikispaces and begin exploring what wikis are
all about. Wikispaces are infinetly easier to manage than pbwiki and
uses an interface similar to those used in web-basaed e-mails. I also
noted simple embedding of media file, pictures and documents - it all
seems a breeze.
Irecommend taking a quick "tour" of the features.

You must listen to this one!
Found it on Michael Coghlan's website (a very important "face of CALL"

Hi guys,
I just wanted to thank Viktoria for her work with the Clarity's Author
Plus software on creating materials for iLearn Plus. She has done an
amazing job and I would like to encourage you to make use of this
software for creating your own online exercises. You can create your
own "COURSE" and within it have modules on grammar, reading comp etc
etc.
Just ask Mellisa Pink for an account:
http://www.clarityenglish.com/AuthorPlus/index.asp
and you can author any language exercises you want!

Hi guys
Just wanted to share with you the IAP wiki - this is for the group we
finished teaching but they are coming back to it and contribute.
Please have a look and explore:
http://iap2006.pbwiki.com/
This and the Yahoo Portal was really enjoyed by students. The student
representative during her speech at the Certificate Presentations
said: We came here and we thought we were good at computers but what
Renata and John showed us was amazing... It was like... black magic"
When you find out that the speaker was actually a BLACK person you
will understand the humour and the roaring laughter that followed... :)

Hello,
Just to let you know that I am biting the bullet and experiment with
pbwiki with IAPs (advanced group)
Please have a look at our site:
http://iap2006.pbwiki.com/Wikis%20for%20academic%20purposes
If you could, please, create a page for yourself or "edit" existing
pages it would be fun.
To edit, you need a password, which is "iap2006"
to see all pages go to :Wiki Information" at the bottom and go to:
view all pages"
Some pages are of individuals and some are "collaborative"
See your edits there:)
Renata
Hi Renata
Thanks. I actually found it sometime later with the help of another
teacher. One of the problems was that I was unfamiliar with Jenni's
computer, where I was stationed at the time.
Cheers

Dear Sigs
Happy Easter to you all: here is Renata's family enjoying Easter
Sunday at the Fenrntree Gully park - lovely walk along the Kokoda
track was a good idea after a morning spent on eating herrings,
salads, cold meats with horseradish sauce and tonnes of cakes!
The kids enjoyed the egg hunt no matter what their ages - some 22 year
olds didn't mind being egg hunters for a day :)

I am off to Tasmania tomorrow morning so won't be as active online -
hope you guys will take over in my absence.
Have you had a chance to look at the wiki place recommended ?
Please do so, we really need to explore it for the IAPs!
Renata
Hi,
*Issue 1:* I decided first to have a look at the specs of this tool
http://pbwiki.com/edu/ and analyse them a bit:
1. Space 5000MB (5 gigabytes) - is quite a lot!
Lets compare with
- standard memory sticks: 128MB,256MB or 512MB
- The standard CD-ROM holds 650 or 700 MB </wiki/Mebibyte> of data
this means that there is a lot of storage space for a long period of
time for text, images, audios and videos.
2. Choice: Make it public or private
This is also a welcome feature - as tutors, we can restrict wiki site to
our class only. Students can do the same, creating a group of
co-students collaborating with others within a restricted area.
3. Fully encrypted SSL access
*Secure Sockets Layer* (*SSL*) means, in short, that there is extra
security provided so hackers, spammers etc can't get in easily.
4. Custom domains (http://wiki.myschool.edu/)
Is another helpful feature. and the .edu suffix is especially nice for
the educational purposes.
5. Gorgeous pre-made designs - I haven't explored them yet so don't know
how "gorgeous" they are :)
6. Customizable CSS - Cascading Style Sheets refer to the look of the
pages: size of letters, headers, footers etc.
If you can customise aything it is generally good!
7. Unlimited comments on every page - tick!
8. Lockable pages - big tick!
9. RSS feeds - Really Simple Syndication, a form of web syndication used
by news websites and weblogs. What it means, I believe, is that you can
treat this wiki as a "newsreader" which means you can add RSS feeds from
different websites you are interested in and then you can use this wiki
as a one-stop check point for any new content on these sites. I must
explore this, because I was planning to introduce newsreaders (different
ones) to academic classes so maybe we can kill two birds with one stone
here!
10. Advanced permissions - don't know what is this about.
*Issue 2: *All in all this tool seems a very comprehensive one. I am
going to set up a "sandbox" wiki for us to play with:
What should we call it? I am waiting for your suggestions :)
Renata
Dear Sigs,
It doesn't look like we can organise a F2F meeting: we are on completely
different time tables this time round.
We need to look at the wikis though, because we might need to introduce
them to our CSS2 module for IAPs (more advanced IAP students who find
current CSS module too basic). I was asked to write the new module for
the 29th May course, so there is little time to explore:) Nothing new!
Thanks Andrew for this fantastic definition of wikis. Here is a tool we
are going to explore:
http://pbwiki.com/edu/
Perhaps the first thing we could do is to explore an existing wiki site
suggested at the bottom of the page: Kem Crimmins is an English
professor at Penn State University and uses wikis with his students.
Could you please explore his site and post your
thoughts/discoveries/comments to this list.
John, you are also receiving this e-mail: would you consider joining our
SIG online?

>
Andrew,
You have almost answered your question yourself :)
Yes, this lock is on a tollbar and the oolbar is called "Forms" and you can see
all toolbars for MSWORD in VIEW/TOOLBARS/
Hope it helps - if it doesn't - there is always Penny to hug!
Renata
Hi All
It seems that some of us are going to look at 'wiki'. Now I wasn't
sure what a wiki is. I know about wikipedia, and used it to bring up
this definition of wiki.
'A wiki is a type of website that allows anyone visiting the site to
add, remove, or otherwise edit all content, very quickly and easily,
sometimes without the need for registration. This ease of
interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for
collaborative writing. The term wiki is a shortened form of wiki
wiki which is from the native language of Hawaii (Hawaiian), where
it is commonly used as an adjective to denote something "quick"
or "fast" '
So there you go. It certainly sounds as if it has classroom
potential. It will be interesting to explore this issue.
Cheers
Andrew
This is my first entry - I've been really busy lately. Anyhow, first things first. The cat in my photo is called Penny, and she's the only female outside of work who doesn't drive me crazy.
Secondly, not a philosophical questions, but a trifling technical issue (from which we hopefully could all benefit). I've noticed when doing course reports here in the computer room that there's a small 'lock' symbol at the top of the screen which conveniently allows the user to unprotect/protect the course report, giving greater flexibility in formatting.
The trouble is that I can't find this symbol on my office computer. I know it's hiding in some toolbar, but I can't find where?
Cheers

I thought that being a bunch of people with international connections through families and friends we could have a look at creating our own personalised "world clock"
online.
http://www.timeanddate.com
I have set up one for myself with times for 4 countries/cities and it's just great - each time I click on the link I get all the places I am interested in and don't have to do the calculations in my head. Especially now with the daylight saving changes.
So have a go and click at Personal World Clock link and configure the settings:) Let me know how you are going

I think the first major collaboration/class assistant tool we are going to look at are wikis. I cannot wait to get my teeth into it as it sounds sooo promising and soo
student-engaging.
I would like to meet you F2F as soon as practical to discuss it as a possibility and maybe to set up a wiki for us to explore. What do you think would be the best time and place?
Hi Renata,
I may need some help. i have a CD of recent pics form New Zealand but am not
sure what to do.
thanks for your advice on this
Jill
Also great idea re world clock as I think the time for DC in US is 14 hours
