Salam

Pakistan is in pressing need for such technological deployments. Our country is facing acute energy crisis. IBM is also working on such projects under a platform called 'Green Planet'. I wonder if any HEC scholar working on such projects, I also published some research papers in IEC61850 substation automation standard. I really want to continue my research on Smart grid, if anyone want to join or provide some help

5th International Workshop on
Content Delivery Networks (CDN 2010)
to take place during
10th IEEE/ACM International Symposium on
Cluster, Cloud and Grid Computing (CCGrid 2010)

*** Papers Due: 5th December 2009 ***

We are in the midst of an Internet computing revolution. One vision of
21st century computing is that users will access
Internet services and ?resource-hungry" applications (e.g., gaming,
streaming media etc.) over lightweight portable devices
rather than through some descendant of the traditional desktop PCs. In
this context, distributing and processing
Internet-based data in an efficient and cost-effective manner is a
challenging issue in Internet technology.
Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) have emerged to address this challenge
by offering infrastructure and mechanisms
to deliver content and services in a scalable manner. Nevertheless,
modern applications do not just perform retrieval
or access operation on content, but also create, modify and manage
content, and actively place them at appropriate locations.
To deal with such new requirements, more general Content Networks (CNs)
are being introduced. Design and implementation of
robust and efficient CNs in large-scale computing environments demand
for the use of emerging paradigms and software
technologies, such as Peer-to-Peer, Grid and the latest IT trend?Cloud
computing. The integration of these emerging
technologies in content delivery opens new perspectives in Internet
technologies, raising new issues in the architecture,
design and implementation of existing CDNs.

Areas of interest
CDN 2010 is intended as a forum for lively discussion of aggressively
innovative and potentially disruptive ideas
in all aspects of CDNs. The main theme of this full day workshop is
"Content Delivery in the Cloud".
CDN 2010 will capture new research trends and results in terms of
design, architecture,
and applications for content and service delivery in the Internet and
Clouds;
optimization for Cloud-based content delivery; and performance
measurement methodologies.
Position papers will be strongly favored.
Specifically, the areas of interest are the following (but are not limited):

* Cloud/Grid/P2P/Agent-based Content delivery and management on the
Internet
* Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications
* Service-Level Agreements (SLAs), business models and service pricing
* Content distribution internetworking scenarios, architectures and
methodologies
* Cross-platform interoperability
* Performance of application and service delivery in the Cloud
* Scalable, self-managing and autonomic Content Delivery Clouds
* Privacy, security, ownership and reliability issues

Respected All, AoA.

Plz see following about latest available in market:

Intel

Today in Servers latest (Nehalem) Quad core Xeon 55xx (DP/ for dual socket boards) and Xeon 35xx ( UP/ for single socket boards) are alive.
Today in Servers Quad core Xeon 54xx (DP/ for dual socket boards) are not good.
And Xeon 53xx (DP/ for dual socket boards) are dead.
And Xeon 33xx/32xx ( UP/ for single socket boards) are not so good.

AMD

http://products.amd.com/en-us/OpteronCPUResult.aspx?f1=Third-Generation+AMD+Opteron%E2%84%A2

Today in Servers latest Quad core and Six Core Opteron 83xx and 84xx (Shanghai -- 3rd generation) are alive.
Today in Servers Opterons 13xx/23xx/24xx (Barcelona --- 2nd generation) are not so good.

Intel's specialty is QPI (quick path interconnect) --- removed Front Side Bus (FSB), in Nehalem CPUs, as an effort to over come the bottleneck of memory bandwidth. This bottleneck arises when more number of cpu cores, each performing floating point oprations in HPC applications, strive to get access to main memory simultaneously. Infact today CPU cores are fast and scalable but not the memory bandwidth. Also Intel introduced QPI to compete with the AMD's speciality Direct Connect Architecture (DMA) in its latest CPUs.

Please have a look on the websites above for numbering schemes, code names, specs and prices.

With best regards,
Amjad Ali.

SC09 redux

Last week, about 11,000 people flooded Portland, Oregon to discuss the latest developments in supercomputing at SC09.

For the opening keynote, Intel Chief Technology Officer Justin Rattner introduced attendees to the 3D web. “It’s time to apply all of our High Performance Computing skills to the development, standardization and use of the 3D web,” said Rattner. “Nothing is more important to the long-term health of the HPC industry.”

Highlights of Rattner’s talk included an introduction to OpenSimulator and ScienceSim. OpenSimulator is an application server for 3D environments, and ScienceSim is a grid running OpenSimulator, dedicated to scientific applications. To demonstrate how these Second Life-like simulations could be scientifically useful, Rattner showed the audience FernLand. Conceived by Utah State University graduate student Aaron Duffy, FernLand is an attempt to simulate both the lifecycle and population genetics of ferns.

Other demos during Rattner’s keynote included a discussion of 3D fashion simulations, accurate simulations of the draping of cloth, and an audiovisual simulation of a babbling brook, generated using computational physics.

Although Rattner put on a good show, audience reaction was mixed. Twitter user simonmcs’ question, “Am I the only one who’s not convinced the ‘3D web’ is the next HPC killer app?” prompted several audience members to pipe up with their own doubts.

The Wednesday plenary was given by Lee Hood from the Institute for Systems Biology, who spoke on the emergence of predictive, personalized, preventive and participatory (P4) medicine, which is closely coupled with high-performance and high-throughput computing.

In spite of Hood’s status as a plenary speaker, his talk was somewhat anticlimactic in the face of the previous days’ Masterworks session, which featured Deepak Singh of Amazon and David Haussler from the University of California at Santa Cruz. Singh gave a summary of the computing needs of biology – and what they could mean for the future of medicine. Haussler addressed the potential of high-performance computing to reconstruct our evolutionary history.

The final keynote was given by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, on the topic of computing, energy and climate change. Audience response was largely positive. Cameron Kiddle, from the University of Calgary, the Grid Research Center, and WestGrid, wrote on Twitter, “Enjoyed the keynote by Al Gore at #SC09. He is a very good speaker – humorous at times and serious at times.”

There were, inevitably, a few naysayers. Twitter user Supercomputin09 wrote, “Whew. So, Al gives us a one and a half hour advertisement for his business mixed with weak jokes and vague aphorisms.”

As always, the exhibition floor was a colorful display of the latest in supercomputing and related fields -- more than we can tell in this space. If you want more on SuperComputing, then check out our SC09 event page, or visit the SC10 page to get a head start on planning for next year’s conference.

Saarland University and IMPRS are not much popular in Pakistan but it is one of the best universities in Germany for "Computer Science" education. All education is in English for Masters and PhD students in computer science and one does not need German language at all to study. I am here for few months and found no problem without German language.

Max Plank Institute and DFKI are the world renowned research organizations inside Saarland University giving a lot of opportunities to do research in different fields of Computer Science.

In recent CHE German Computer science university ranking Saarland stands in top three universities.
Use Google translate to read in English.

There are also many more opportunities to do "Research Assistant" (hiwi) jobs at this university compared to other popular universities of the Germany.

For completeness purpose, let me know you that the top three universities in Germany for Computer Science research are Munich, Karlsruhe and Saarland (listed here in no particular order).

First requirement to get admission is to read all the instructions on the webpage of the university. Second requirement is the ability to understand everything written on that webpage. Third requirement is the ability to use common sense in case of confusion. If any information in my email is contradicting to the information on the website of university then obviously the information on the website is the authority.

Hi all,

I need/request some help from those who have some experience in debugging/profiling/tuning parallel scientific codes, specially for PDEs/CFD.

I have parallelized a Fortran CFD code to run on Ethernet-based-Linux-Cluster. Regarding MPI communication what I do is that:

Suppose that the grid/mesh is decomposed for n number of processors, such that each processors has a number of elements that share their side/face with different processors. What I do is that I start non blocking MPI communication at the partition boundary faces (faces shared between any two processors) , and then start computing values on the internal/non-shared faces. When I complete this computation, I put WAITALL to ensure MPI communication completion. Then I do computation on the partition boundary faces (shared-ones). This way I try to hide the communication behind computation. Is it correct?

IMPORTANT: Secondly, if processor A shares 50 faces (on 50 or less elements) with an another processor B then it sends/recvs 50 different messages. So in general if a processors has X number of faces sharing with any number of other processors it sends/recvs that much messages. Is this way has "very much reduced" performance in comparison to the possibility that processor A will send/recv a single-bundle message (containg all 50-faces-data) to process B. Means that in general a processor will only send/recv that much messages as the number of processors neighbour to it.  It will send a single bundle/pack of messages to each neighbouring processor.
Is their "quite a much difference" between these two approaches?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
AMJAD.
