Re: [palace-client] Palace on Linux

This reply is a little late in coming, but hopefully not too late to be of
help.

As CS said, a Palace client for Linux was never made, although I seem to
remember that at one point (very long ago) there was supposed to be one "in
the works." It obviously never came about. You *can*, however, run the
Windows version of the Palace client in Linux, using Wine. (So you're
already on the right track.) I've done it myself, but it's been a while so
I'm not sure if the current version of Wine has better or worse support for
Palace than when I tried it. I'm guessing it would be better, but you never
know. For reference, by the way, the Wine AppDB page for The Palace is
located at http://appdb.winehq.com/appview.php?appId=1132 The original
poster mentions a problem with small fonts. I experienced that as well, and
was never sure what to do about it. Maybe someone on this list with more
experience using Linux and Wine together could suggest how to fix this?

Anyway, to get Palace running, you have to have it installed somewhere. I
had it installed on a separate Windows partition on my computer, and then
got it to run by typing the following into a terminal: wine c:\\Program
Files\\ThePalace\\Palace32.exe
Change that to match the path where you installed Palace, if you didn't use
the default installation directory. Also, note that where you would
ordinarily type one backslash in the path when using Windows, you have to
"escape" the character with another backslash. So c:\ becomes c:\\ and so on.

Now, if you're trying to install Palace and get it to run without using
Windows at all, i.e., you want to actually install Palace onto your Linux
partition and run it from there... that's a whole different story, and one
I've no experience in telling, so to speak. For this situation I would
recommend you check out the "Installing Wine Without Windows" subsection (
http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wine-user/config-drive-main#CONFIG-NO-WINDOWS
) of the Wine User Guide. And actually, even though you've apparently
already managed to install Wine, the rest of the User Guide (
http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wine-user/index ) has a lot of good
information that could help you out as well.

Let us know if you get it working, and good luck!
