if you ./start-plugin it starts both sides of the server for you. but please
note that if you host your media from a dedicated web server on port 80 it runs
MUCH MUCH faster.

I got a linux version of the server up on PCLinuxOS. What I'm having a
problem with is getting the httpd to start by using the command ./start-httpd

I get this error as either user or root. It doesn't matter.

error:

/usr/local/palace/ bin/httpd: No such file or directory

However there is a file there. It appears with the same icon as palace does.

./start-palace works

./start-httpd does not.

Anyone with ideas?

What kind of idea did you have for the writeup, and I'm sure a couple of us
could do a writeup and you could see what you liked. Great thing with different
people is there could be 2 completely different styles of a write up, and one
may be a lot easier for most than the other.

I have noticed that ./start will do both sides, but am debating on removing the
server side of the info from the palace directory as I do have a local apache
server up and running, and will be setting it up to be the media server for
palace.

In case it got lost in everything here are my specs:
Home network using a DLink Router
Cable Internet with 8Mbit/s down, 1 Mbit/s up
Pentium 4 3.2 ghz with 2 Gigs ram
PCLinuxOS distribution of linux

will keep everyone updated on how well rooms load in palace after I get media
moved over and settings in palace redirected for media server.

Would be great if sourceforge would take the palace project and maintain it
along with some of the now dead tools.

When you self host, be it a Win or Linux server .. your up is the guest's down
:(
You may find placing your media on a backbone 'media host' to be of value,
easily done in pserver.prefs.
My comments may well be dated, I only have one I host these days, it's squeezed
into a Centos LAMP server I maintain for OpenSim work.
The polish a Linux server offers is the wealth of Plugins available that were
developed over the years.

That is very true. I'm just doing mine as a hobby to be able to play around with
it and get to know the ins and outs. Luckily by using the standalone apache
server, rooms load properly and fast for myself as well as others.

On my new computer, i don't have Photoshop - and i'm using a freebie program
called Paint.net - which is a very good stand-in - no complaints.

One little snag, tho. i have downloaded Palace Palette, just like i did for
Photoshop. Paint.net sees it, but can't apparently use it.

It seems Palace palette comes in as a whole lot of numbers, from 0 to 255, while
Paint.net palettes are expressed in hex (0 to 9, a to f).

Any idea how i can get Palace palette into a form that Paint.net can use,
please?

Well if this paint supports color table, you can open one of the old
mansion pictures (or any GIf converted properly with the Palace
palette)
and save a Paint compatible color table from this GIF.

If you do get one that works I would love to put it up on Palaceplanet
so please let us know if you get it to work?

hope this helps

Somethig simple people can use like the other quick guides on the

Thanks, Maarten - with your help, i've got stage 1 acomplished. As you said, i
opened one of the old Mansion gifs in paint.net, and saved a colour palette from
it. That worked.

Now all i have to do is to find how to make paint.net apply the palette to a
gif! - and that's not a Palace matter, so i guess i'll have to look elsewhere
for that help.

But - thanks again, you're a star!

On a second look, it doesn't seem to have worked. Looking at the two files
(paint.net's default palette, and my 'PalacePalette' with a text editor - they
are the same! :((

So although i told it to save a paletter from the Mansion gif, it seems not to
have done it. Head scratching time!!

If you do get one that works I would love to put it up on Palaceplanet

That is some very good news. :3 I'll be taking a look soon.

I'm currently learning to create 3D scenes with the Bryce software, to use as
room backgrounds for my Palace. But I would also like to create some freebies
to share with the Palace builders community. Since I'm just getting started, I
can't promise anything at this time. But once I have something to share, I'll
let you know and send some for you to add to the resource pages. :D

***

By the way, I'd like to make a couple of serious suggestions for the website.

To be honest, the website is very hard to navigate. Mainly because almost every
link I click on is forced on me on a new window or tab. This is truly, very
annoying. Especially when you have many windows already open and your computer
is getting slower and slower. So I'd really, really suggest that you change
this.
I believe that many visitors will be glad of that change as well. The website
will be easier to browse and I'll be encouraged to visit it more often. As of
right now, I haven't given the place a closer look because of this problem. And
I'd like to explore everything it has to offer.

Something else that would benefit the website is a change of the layout.
Another reason why I find it hard to browse is because of the colors. They hurt
my eyes a little. All the text has the exact same colors, including links,
which only differ from the rest for being underlined. The links could also be
organized a little better.

Again, these are the honest opinions of a visitor.

Either way, thank you for sharing and for the hard work!

I thank everybody who replied for the information. :)

I am still doing my research and learning some Iptscrae. However, that plugin
would be truly fantastic. I know there is a plugin called IptStats (or
something similar), but I've barely found any information about it. I know it's
installed in my server, but I don't understand how to use it. There is just not
enough information for a beginner like me to get going.

A true database system plugin, or whatever is the closest to that you can get
with the Palace software's limitations, would be truly, truly helpful and
appreciated. So if any of you manage to do this, let me know. This is
something I really want.

I don't intend to create an MMORPG or anything complex like Balamb Garden
offers. But I do wish to have the ability to create, read, update and delete
(CRUD) a few statistics for the visitors of my Palace, which I can reuse every
time they come; and perhaps even be able to display at the website.

Sorry if that is too much to ask. XD

Again, thank you!

It is always a nuisance, when re-entering a room, to bring my av to the front,
that it repositions itself, and i have to bring it back to it's original place.

i've had the idea of writing a borg which would a) store my avatar position
(WHOME WHOPOS), store the current room ID similarly, jump to another room,
(GOTOROOM), jump back, reposition my av, and that's that.

i've written a prototype, and it doesn't give me any error messages. However,
as soon as my av arrives in a room after the first GOTOROOM, the borg seems to
stop working.

Is it the case that a borg can only operate in the room in which it is
initiated? or is there a time limit, before another jump can happen? or what,
please?

All ideas welcome - i have so much to learn.

Hi,

Your borg should not stop working unless there's a problem in it or if
the room you enter disallows them.

the problem is a timing issue... if you leave the room, you lose any active
commands when you do. So you need to add something to your borg to be executed
when you enter a room, to check if you have stored your position.
You will have a coflict, as many borgs and many homes have something to move you
to a position not on someone (be sure to check your own borg in particular). A
time delay may get you around this as well (ALARMEXEC)

If your palace is on a PlugsAll enabled server
http://palaceplugins.com/
(Plugall 4.2.8 Updates, 20th March 2009 Martyn Gilbertson)
then you can also use a specific chatgoto in a say.
Or consider a 'come here' On Enter from that next room.

Add using this syntax to your plugsall dat file.
chatgoto <roomNumber>|currentroom <string>

Hello All!

***

An Official Palace announcement, sadly of bereavement,
arrives to our community; regarding one of our fellow,
pioneer Palace family members' ...

KellyJean, Owner of:
"Bridge of Dreams & Nightmares" Palace

The sudden & very sad (confirmed) notice, arrives after
an extended health battle; which is as follows, -

"KellyJean is, I'm sorry to inform you all; ... KellyJean
lost her battle with cancer. She passed away on the 25th
of May (Memorial Day) 2009."

***

A very dear & sweet Sister~Friend, KellyJean has always been!

Her cheery, bubbly sense of humor, creative drive, genuine
kindness, favorite activities, dedication, conviction, etc.
was infectious to say the least; rare qualities she possessed,
a true gem of a person, ... she's surely missed greatly!

-

An avid pioneer Palacer (owner & visitor), she spent countless
hours over the years; creating enormous amounts of - unique
graphics, specialized themed tours, whilst creating, incorporating
& implementing literary, music, & scripted effects for her - home
palace.

As well as participating her Palace - each year for the 24 Hop,
& with fellow Palaces each month; reflecting Holiday, Special
Occasion, Specialty Themed & Favorite Offline Activity tour
events, of which scores of Palacers visited year round.

Some of her absolute favorite pastimes & hobbies have been -
Everything Palace (lol), Graphics (creating all types), Ren Faire
(Everyone in Costume, lol), Travel (domestic) [particularly loved
cruises (caribbean), which she got to try once & wanted to go
again; & to eventually go international (Morocco & Ireland)]; as
well as enjoyed Autumn Solstice, Halloween, OldTime Horror Movies
(but Not too gory, as she'd always say, lol), Comedy TV Shows,
Music (70's, 80's, New Age, Celtic); spending time with family &
friends ... to mention a few.

-

She fought diligently to the end these last 2 years, upon being
diagnosed with breast cancer; ... of which her last words to me
just a few weeks ago were, that she was going to keep fighting
to the end, even though she'd been definitively told to simply
succumb, as there was nothing more that could be done, ... very
quickly after this she went into hospice.

She has fought hard & won though, ... not the outcome we'd hoped
& tried so hard for; ... but at least she's now safe, in a better
place, happy & at peace!

Yet another angel at heavens gate, taken way too soon at only 47;
... whom upon the bell's 3rd chime, has notably earned, been given
her wings & is now with her Mom, Dad & her Brandy baby (1st lil
pup) also taken way too soon! ... (And hopefully enjoying a cruise
in the caribbean, like she wanted to again, or in Morocco or Ireland;
... wishful thinking.)

She is survived by her husband, father-in-law, brother-in-law,
cousins, sisters, nieces, her Furbaby Buffy (2nd lil' pup, lol);
as well as countless online (particularly Palace) & offline family,
friends, colleagues, & clientele; of which she brought a genuine -
smile, laugh, warm heart & assistance, & much more to.

-

To visit her pally ...

KellyJean, Owner of:

For those who wish additional info; I will post updates, as soon as
they become definitive.

Sincerely,

*Io~
;-(

But, ... a ;-) & a ;-D for KJ, because; ... she would want
that most from all, & allow her to rest happy & peacefully!

If you have a sudden urge to pleasantly, smile &/or laugh for what
appears to be absolutely No reason at all; ... you never know, it
might just be KellyJean, sending some bubbly humor your way, to the
depths of your existence, from way up above!

Sadly, the time has come, after ten years, to close Griffin's Lair. Time runs
out for Griffins on August 26. I want to take this time to thank all those who
supported us, especially those that made us your home for a little while. My
other palace, Bob's Place, will remain open, and as time goes on I will move
some of the more innovative animated and interactive rooms from various holiday
tours and the prop rooms from Griffin's Lair to Bob's Place. Thank you all for
some wonderful friendships!

hey e,

i just got a new windows 7 and started using it wednesday ... so far, i havent
had an issue with palace.  At first it wouldnt accept a reg code, therefore
wouldnt recognize me as anything but a visitor so i couldnt god up.  However, i
right clicked on the palace icon, went to troubleshoot compatibility, and
followed the prompts, got a different reg code and have had no problem since.
Have had no other issues as of yet, including locating media and sound folders
(like vista had)    Hope that helps some.

oh glad i could help!!!  i avoided vista like the plague since the day it came
out, and was somewhat leary of windows 7, but, just from what i have seen so
far, its everything vista was supposed to be but never was lol.   If i find
anymore glitches, ill post them... the compatibility troubleshooting option just
seems like the answer to a lot of the misery.

However, if you want to go so far as to install the Windows XP virtual PC within
Windows 7, then you can install and run Palace in the XP virtual machine. This
may or may not be a suitable solution if you want to continue to use some other
ancient software on a Windows 7 PC.
