According to an article cited in Dieneke's Anthropology blog,, Neandertals were always an "endangered species".  Well, I think some of us knew that already. . . .

I suspect most mammalian predators heavier than about 50kg are "endangered species"; the prey really canīt support many of them. 7 billion large mammals...

Paul: Up to a point, this is true, and it probably explains why many mammalian predators "specialize" in herd animals. There are lots of those!...
