Does UML help?

Some people are UML skeptics, and believe that it doesn't help in any
practical sense. I met one chap a couple of nights ago who said to me
"yeah, but you believe in UML" like he was accusing me of being a
Scientologist.

How do other people feel about this? Does UML add value in the
software development process? Could we all get by quite happily
without it?
