THE INTERNET TURNS 35
Belated birthday wishes to the Internet that turned 35 on October 29th. That marks the day that UCLA attempted to connect host-to-host with the Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park. The UCLA team was supposed to type in “log” and Stanford would reply “in” to link the two computers. Although the system crashed after just “LO”, it is still considered first message sent over a network. We’ve come a long way.

Tiffany Shlain, Webby Founder, will speak on a panel at The California Governor's Conference titled: Women and Technology: How to Master It Before It Masters You. Moderated by Sheryl Sandberg, VP Global Online Sales Marketing at Google, Tiffany joins distinguished female executives from Yahoo, Apple, and AOL in this discussion.
She offers the following tips:
1. Let Technology Simplify Your Life. Look at your to-do list. What can you do faster and more efficiently online? Shop, make restaurant reservations, keep your schedule, pay bills, print stamps. The list is long.
2. Be Efficient with Email. Read your email in batches, rather than every time one comes in. Use an email program that allows you to mark important emails so you can sort by priority. Invest in a spam filter program.
3. Have a Day Without Technology each week. Turn-off email and cell phone, PDA and pagers. It will remind you the importance of uninterrupted quality time with your family, friends or just your self.

11.29.04 Art, Technology Culture Presents Sonya Rapoport, Leonardo/ISAST
“From Homunculus to Golem: Tracking an Alter-Avatar”
Berkeley-based media artist Sonya Rapoport draws
on alchemy and mysticism to illuminate contemporary controversies at
the intersection of sex and science.
A practicing artist for 40 years, Rapoport will describe her evolution
from abstract expressionist painting in the 1960's to net art
installations currently under development. Rapoport will presents
slides, video, and two new interactive webworks: Redeeming the Gene,
and Kabbalah/Kabul, that address the constitution of artificial
beings.
