Copy, right?

July 22, 2005

Dear Dilek,

Like a lot of artists who have been around for a while, there
are people out there doing fairly commendable copies of my
work. Some copy "in the manner of"--the general themes and
ideas. Others copy part of the style or as much as they can get
of the style. Some take images from the Internet or other
publications and copy verbatim. Some almost "get it" and apart
from turgid brushwork, the only real difference is the
signature.

Over the past few years there has been a growth industry in
copying the work of the recently deceased French painter
Bernard Cathelin. Perhaps somebody painted like that even
before him. His images and their variations, much in popular
demand for current home decor, have become commonplace under
many signatures. This has occurred because his is pretty basic
stuff and easy to clone--simple flat patterns, minimal drawing,
no light and shade. The work gives few problems to unskilled
painters with an eye for cash flow.

Right now at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia,
PA, there's a forty-year retrospective of the work of Richard
Pettibone. He's the guy who makes meticulous, postcard-size
copies of some of the late and recent art icons--Warhol,
Stella, Lichtenstein, Duchamp, Mondrian, etc. The critics of
course love it because they think the work challenges the
popular notions of originality, size, and banality. Think of
it: Warhol's soup cans, which were copied from soup cans, are
copied by Pettibone. Critics also like his fun-poking mix and
match--Dali-ized Warhol Marilyns, etc. Again, Pettibone has
always been careful to copy the stuff he can copy. For the
copyist, Pop is a piece of cake. To my knowledge, he hasn't
made a decent copy of, let's say, a John Singer Sargent
watercolour, because he can't. In this sense, the copyist
Pettibone is being forthright and honest.

The prevalence of cloners may account for why a lot of
brilliant and deft artists are guarded and devious about their
ways and means. Sargent, a private, secretive guy, was known to
labour over work in order to keep it fresh, and to finish with
a flourish to make it look easy. This "speedy" look has defied
his would-be copyists for years. "Mine is the horny hand of
toil," said Sargent. Secretly, I've always felt that Sargent's
attitude was something worth cloning.

Best regards,

Robert

PS: "This show...is a solid one that establishes Mr.
Pettibone's role in the land rush of cloning, borrowing and
recycling known as postmodernism. In the process, he has made
art that he can call his own. Its emotional wisdom for the
artistically inclined is bracingly clear: love art, love
yourself, do what you have to do and what only you can do.
Utter honesty is the only path to originality." (Roberta Smith)

Esoterica: In your daily toil, be on the edge of pride with
your unique touch and your devious methods. Take joy in the
maneuvers that might be just a bit tricky to copy. Your "look"
is your look, you own it, and you should know that when it's
appropriated, it has been taken because it's valuable. You have
the goods to change and modify at your pleasure--and to have
sport with your cloners. "Those who follow are always behind."
(A. Y. Jackson)

Auguste Rodin

June 13, 2005

Dear Dilek,

Artists of all stripes can learn something from Auguste Rodin.
As in the work of Michelangelo, to whom he was indebted,
Rodin's sculptural material is often cut away only to the
degree that it's creatively needed. This unfinished and rough
aspect is a virtue--the hand of the artisan allows viewer
participation in the art process. Also, simplifying shapes and
means of expression increases an artist's opportunity for
direct emotional impact.

It's this "in one" contrast that makes figures like "The
Thinker" so viable. The athletic physique is transfixed by the
intense capability of the inner man. It's a brilliant example
of body language. In another exemplary piece, "The Kiss," the
female figure is submissive and yet delicately responsive. The
male, in contrast, is powerful yet gentle, his fingertips
resting tentatively on her thigh.

Rodin used caricature and exaggeration to emphasize and bring
life to his ideas. Brutality is depicted with outsize hands,
veins, stressed musculature, distressed sinews. Age is shown
with the weary slump of the material--sag, bloat and
disfigurement. Youth with simplicity and innocence of finish.
Love with palpable eagerness made more so by the absence of
distracting detail.

In the tragic "Burghers of Calais" a state of confusion is
implied by the irregular arrangement of the figures. These are
people in an extreme emotional crisis, their faces perplexed by
immanent doom. Rodin's is an intense personal expression of
elemental power--even the hasty modeling of the clothing seems
to show anguish and stress. Through all this an observant
student should note the very height of the action and the most
telling gestures. It's as if the sculptor took multiple photos
of acting models and selected one as the quintessential. In
order to get an idea of what I'm talking about, I've asked
Andrew to illustrate these ideas at the top of the current
clickback. See URL below.

Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) rose from disadvantaged circumstances
and spent his first years designing tiles and masonry. In later
life his sculpture and drawings were in high demand. Much has
been made of the early rejection of his work by the French
Academy and his liaison with Camille Claudel, and others.
Whatever one might think of his life, Rodin was a master. "Work
lovingly done," he said, "is the secret of all order and all
happiness."

Best regards,

Robert

PS: "The Third Republic consumed art like nobody's business.
There was a perceived need for public iconic imagery to
celebrate the secular spirit of the new bourgeois order in a
style running on the fumes of Romanticism." (David Duke)

Esoterica: Rodin indeed engaged a professional photographer,
Gaudenzio Marconi. As well as photographing finished work,
Marconi took multiple shots of models for Rodin to use at his
leisure. Most notable is the attention to light and shadow,
both soft and hard. Rotated sculpture, like rotated life, when
lit consistently, picks up a moving montage of ever-changing
patterns. Rodin was highly conscious of the "circumambulation
factor." Sculpture, unlike "wall art," was meant to be circled.

well as examples and commentary on Rodin's work, please go to:

Michael Chapman, ASC Enters 'House of D'

By Bob Fisher

For Oscar Award-winning cinematographer Michael Chapman, ASC ("Raging Bull," "Taxi Driver"), "House of D" harkened back to a nostalgic time in his own life - one he was excited to bring to the big screen.

Chuy Ch‡vez on 'Me and You and Everyone We Know'

By Staff

It was clear early on that film-35mm or even 16mm-would be out of the question for "Me and You and Everyone We Know;" the story called for a number of long scenes with children, and July didn't want to have to be stingy with the stock.

From the Editor's Desk
This week on CGNetworks, CG Supervisor Dariush Derakhshani takes Alias Maya 6.5 for a test drive. In his review, Dariush looks at the improvements Maya 6.5 has to offer including Mental Ray enhancements. Is it worth the upgrade? Read more here.

We're also pleased to showcase 'The Plumber', a CG animated short by Redrover Animation Studios. We speak to Richard Rosenman about the making of the short film, which just completed its festival circuit and is now available to view on CGNetworks.

Two new Reader Projects from CG Choice Award winners are also in this week. Jesus Sanchez takes us through the making of 'Solitude' with his use of subtle colors to light a sombre, lonely scene. Sung-Gyu Jeon of Webzen Inc., gathers fighters, weapons, models, lights and major CG effort for the 'Battle'.

CG Challenge XVII - Master and Servant
The Master and Servant Challenge explores and exposes the motives, emotions and expressions evoked in a myriad of unequal relationships that pervade the human condition. The theme can be taken to encompass an entire spectrum from benevolent leader and adoring followers to maniacal dictator and abused slaves. Whatever you choose to depict, the image must convey the relationship; the attitude and action; and the emotions of the Master and Servant archetypes.

Coffee With Colin :: Ma'am could you please restrain your webpage?

I remember the early days of web design when the world united in an uprising against the villainous Blinking text. This was so successful that the <blink> tag was actually removed from HTML. I am totally serious about this. This weapon has been removed from the hands of the dangerous, however there are other annoying things within reach of children.

The successor of blinking text is the animated gif. This harmless looking character can become a menace in the hands of the "ohh this is so cool" crowd. Imagine reading a book that is crawling with ants and little characters hitting the pages with hammers, perhaps dinosaurs running across the pages only to disappear in a puff of smoke? And just when you get to the final part of the story, a Vegas style marquee jumps up and shouts "Hit the monkey to win!" Would you read this book? Then why do we do this to our web pages?

I think part of it is the misconception of more is more. Or as they said on Deep Purple's classic "Made In Japan," can we have everything louder than everything else." If you really want to get attention on your web page, a yelling carnival of activity will not achieve this. More than likely the viewer will scream and then breath a deep sign of relief as they click away for the site as fast as possible.

When you design your web page, think about content first. (The actual meat of the site) Then think about navigation (The way to get to the content). Animation, imagery and color are there to enhance and augment the content, not to replace it. Animations are not wrong in themselves, however try to slow them down a little and avoid fast jerky movements or sudden flashes. Please. I want to read your page and enjoy your wonderful content, not use your site as a tool to trigger a seizure.

Web tip: Make sure that you use descriptive titles in your page titles. These are one of your main tools for getting a good page ranking in search engines. "Untitled doc" won't get you much traffic.

New book out now! How to Wow - Photoshop for the Web

Author of the Photoshop WOW books - Jack Davis invited myself and Jan Kabili to write a book in the new "How to Wow " series.

This book is full of cool designs and techniques to make your sites pop with mouth-watering eye candy. Included CD with project files.

Ctrl/Cmd + Shift[ ] Move the layer to the top/bottom

New book out now! Photoshop/ Dreamweaver Integration

If you are familiar with the hugely popular Super Tutorial on building a web site with Photoshop and Dreamweaver, or my book "From Photoshop to Dreamweaver", you will LOVE this book. This is not an update, this is a COMPLETELY NEW BOOK! This is all the stuff I wish I had put in the previous book such as Expanded explanation of slices and tables, frames and iframes, liquid sites, e-commerce, drop down menus and more. This is a FULL COLOR simple to follow guide that will take you through concept to upload of the DreamweaverCAFE site. It is also flexible enough that you can apply the lessons to any site! I wrote this as the book I wish I had when I started designing web sites.

See more here

Tip: When creating an animated gif, lower the colors and use dithering to smoothen out the images. This will produce a smaller file size.

CGProShop Opens!
Today we're excited to announce the launch of our CGProShop, the new online store for the creative computer graphics community! The mission of the CGProShop is to provide the best outlet for creative computer graphic artists to purchase products directly related to their craft. Over the next few weeks, we will be adding many, many more products including software (electronic downloadable), model sets, DVD training and more.

www.cgproshop.com

To launch the store, we have a suite of Gnomon Workshop DVDs, CGTalk T-Shirts and Ballistic Publishing books. Next week, we will launch our Electronic Download service which will deliver the full set of Discreet Certified Plug-Ins and other software titles such as Shave and a Haircut. We will be aggressively adding products to the CGProShop.

By offering you the best value and service in all areas, we expect the CG Pro Shop will become the defacto standard online store for all things CG related. We hope that you'll enjoy the service we provide on the CGProShop, and that you'll help support CGTalk by making your purchases on the CGProShop!

D'artiste: Character Modelling - Call for Entries
Ballistic Publishing is proud to announce the second title in its d'artiste Digital Artists Master Class series. d'artiste: Character Modeling features three of the community's leading digital artists demonstrating their techniques and approaches - Pascal Blanche, Francisco A. Cortina and Steven Stahlberg. More than just tricks and techniques, d'artiste delves into each artist's overall approach, their choice of subject matter and what inspires them.

Leading artists Pascal Blanché, Francisco A. Cortina, and Steven Stahlberg each take you behind the scenes of their character development showing you the techniques that will take your character modeling skills to the next level. Step-by-step techniques show you how to improve your face modeling, skin shading, facial hair and body modeling among many other tutorials.

Call For Entries - 3D Character Images - We are now calling for artists to submit digital images for consideration to be included in d'artiste Character Modeling. Images can be created in any 3D application. We are interested in digitally created 3D characters whether it be for commercial use, or personal satisfaction.

Artist Profile - Stephan Martiniere
Stephan Martiniere is an internationally renowned science fiction and fantasy artist. He is the recipient of numerous awards including silver and a gold “Spectrum” Award, two Master awards and an Excellence “Expose” Award. In his varied career, Martiniere has worked in animation, video games, theme parks and book covers. He is also an accomplished concept artist who has worked on movies such as ‘I Robot', ‘Star Wars' (episodes Two & Three), ‘Virus', ‘Red Planet', ‘Sphere', and ‘The Time Machine'.

Stephan Martiniere is currently the visual design director for Midway games in Chicago. Midway is the company primarily responsible for games like Mortal Kombat. Stephan describes this as an unexpected situation that turned out to be the right one at the time. “I spoke with my wife about the possibility of working for another company', explains Stephan. “We made a decision that it had to be the right job in the right location. Midway came totally out of nowhere, I wasn't considering Chicago and it turns out to be a fabulous city."

Reader Project - Goblin Attack
CG Choice Award Winner Howard Lyon gives readers the scoop on how he created the Goblin Attack image which recently won acclaim on CGTalk.

This illustration was done for Paizo Publishing's Dragon magazine. The Art Director, Sean Glenn has always given me a lot of freedom with my ideas, and gives the kind of feedback that only enhances the painting and the process. The initial direction given was for a group of heroes to be in the middle of a dungeon, about to be swarmed by a horde of goblins. The attention should be primarily on the heroes, and then the goblins.

Reader Project: The Joker
Filipes Lopes takes CGNetworks readers through the process of creating the comic book villain 'The Joker' - recently awarded a CG Choice award.

I'm a big fan of comic book illustrations and always wanted to make a 3D version of my favorite characters. After seeing the Batman image that a friend, Ricardo "Zy" Thiele did, I had the idea to make a 3D version of The Joker, one of my favorite villains. The main task I had in mind was to capture in one image the very sinister and sarcastic atmosphere. To get this effect I would need a good light and a good facial expression to show his wild personality.

Alienware MJ-12 7750 Workstation Review
Joseph Tan looks at Alienware's top-of-the-line DCC workstation, the MJ-12 7750. Can Alienware successfully break into the workstation market from its gaming background?

Our configured MJ-12 is a real brute, weighing in at 22kg (excluding the Creative Labs Audigy's breakout box). That's quite heavy for a workstation; it might as well be the Battleship Galactica. The case is made from steel, although tough, makes for a significantly heavier machine than some of the competition's aluminium chassis.

R'Osity Weekly: A Renderosity Art Community Update

With great sadness of our collective artistic souls, we bid farewell to the King of Fantasy Art, Chuck Siebuhr.
A long time Renderosity resident, he was an inspiration, a dear friend, a mentor and one of our greatest supporters and generous contributors. May he rest in peace knowing he shall live eternally through his artwork, and that we forever hold his memory gently within our hearts.

Fallen Art - Interview with Tomek Baginski
Fallen Art is the all new short film by Oscar nominated Tomek Baginski. We recently interviewed Tomek, who shared the challenges faced while making the short film, along with an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the film.

The biggest challenge during the production was time. While there was a tight deadline, there was an even tighter budget. “There were days and weeks, especially at the beginning when I was the only person working on the film. It was rather like a long race”, says Baginski. “I wasn't sure we would make the deadline until the last three weeks. The people who participated in the project did a great job. Most of them did it in their free time which is much more important. The project could have fallen over dozens of times.
