You cannot really separate this work into English linguistics and computer
science
exclusive of one another. The field of NLP is a hybrid of both areas and has a
number
of specialized branches of knowledge associated with it (computational
linguistics,
artificial intelligence, and so on)

So you need to come at the topic from both directions at the same time. Try to
find that part of it that is the most interesting to work on for you and you
will
get better results overall.
