== Advanced TDI Samples for Windows NT & Windows 2000 ==

April 26, 2000 - As a WinHEC Special, PCAUSA has enhanced the Advanced TDI
Samples for Windows NT and Windows 2000 by adding a PassThru TDI Filter
driver sample to the already extensive TDI Client samples.

A TDI Filter is a Windows NT filter driver layered above the TCP and UDP
kernel mode TCP/IP devices and below Winsock. A TDI Filter driver intercepts
calls from Winsock as well as from most kernel mode TDI clients.

For more information about this new product for Advanced TDI Programming on
the Windows NT and Windows 2000 platforms see:

     <http://www.pcausa.com/tdisamp/default.htm>

Inquire about Advanced Windows 9X TDI Samples, which are also under
development.

Warm Regards,

Thomas F. Divine

Subject: FYI: Windows ME NDIS Implementation May Break Some Specialty Network Products
tdivine@...
Send Email Send Email

PCAUSA does not have hands-on experience with Windows Millennium yet. One
reason for the delay is that Microsoft typically introduces radical new
chances to network components very late in the review cycle. On Windows
2000, software that ran well through B3 was totally broken on RC1.

However, it appears that Windows ME introduces a new "hybrid" NDIS
architecture which is partly VxD/9X-like and partly NT/W2K-like.

This architecture may break some specialty network products.

In particular, it has been reported that under Windows ME MSTCP does not
call the NdisRegisterProtocol NDIS VxD service. This means that NDIS filters
bases on hooking this service will not work on Windows ME.

     >>This means that products based on the PCAUSA NDIS PIM sample,
     as well as NDIS hooking filters developed by others,
     will fail on Windows ME.<<

It also appears that there are some new adapter naming conventions.

There may be other enhancments...

Regards,

Thomas F. Divine

The currently shipping version of WinDis 32 (V5.00.13.36 - October 29, 1999)
seems to be holding up fairly well. It has survived both Windows 2000 SP1
and Millennium.

However, there are a handful of bug fixes and improvements requested by
customers. None of these seem earth-shaking (unless you really needed the
improvement).

In you are interested in Beta Testing the next WinDis 32 release, you can
find additional information at: <http://www.rawether.net>.

If you have any difficulty reaching the RAWETHER site, please let us know.
The RAWETHER site is currently hosted in-house on a Windows 2000 server for
experimental purposes.

Beta testing for the next release of WinDis 32 will begin September 25,
2000.

Warm regards to each of you,

== PCAUSA Newsletter And Discussion List ==

As you know, the PCAUSA Newsletter and PCAUSA Discussion List are mailing
lists that are hosted by eGroups. So far this service has proven to be very
satisfactory for PCAUSA. We hope it has been for you as well.

For your information, eGroups has been acquired by Yahoo!. Eventually
eGroups will merge with Yahoo! and will then be known as Yahoo! Groups.

The information that PCAUSA has received indicates that there will be an
orderly transition to Yahoo! Groups. You will continue to access the PCAUSA
groups exactly as you have been doing. In addition, we are hopeful that the
new Yahoo! Groups will not become intrusive. We have been told that members
will not have to join Yahoo! to use the existing PCAUSA lists.

== PCAUSA Products And Whistler ==

PCAUSA has just begun testing of PCAUSA products on the Whistler Beta 1
release.

So far we have tested Rawether for Windows (a.k.a WinDis 32) on Whistler
Beta 1.The currently shipping version, V5.00.13.49, was downloaded from the
FTP site and installed. The limited testing so far has not shown any
problems.

However, PCAUSA does plan two phases of updates to Rawether for Windows for
Whistler. The first phase will add support for simple 64-bit variables that
are available even when running in 32-bit mode. The second phase will, of
course, be a 64-bit clean version that may include other Whistler-specific
support.

We will be testing other PCAUSA products on Whistler in the near future.

Stay tuned...

== PCAUSA Products And Windows CE/PocketPC ==

PCAUSA has received a few inquiries concerning providing support for PCAUSA
products on Windows CE/PocketPC. So far we have no plans in this area.
However, we are interested in soliciting our customer's input.

If you have a requirement for a PCAUSA product variation on Windows
CE/PocketPC, please drop a note at:

== Rawether for Windows Support For Wireless Adapters ==

The current Rawether for Windows HookPeek application does not work properly
with Wireless Adapters - even if they report their Medium as 802.3.

The reason for this is that the call to set the NDIS packet filter to
NDIS_PACKET_TYPE_PROMISCUOUS fails.

The solution to this problem is to fallback to selecting
NDIS_PACKET_TYPE_ALL_LOCAL if the call to set NDIS_PACKET_TYPE_PROMISCUOUS
fails.

If you have the Rawether for Windows SDK, then you can make a simple
modification in the HP_StartPromiscuousOperation function to eliminate this
problem.

The HP_StartPromiscuousOperation is found in the HPCtrl.c module in the
Apps\Common directory. Copy the code for setting the NDIS packet type for
NdisMedium802_5 (which already includes the fallback logic) and use it for
setting the NDIS packet type for NdisMedium802_3. Recompile your
applications, and you should be all set.

This modification has been tested by PCAUSA on the LinkSys WPC11 Wireless PC
Card. If you have problems with other Wireless Adapters after making this
modification, please let us know.

===   PRODUCT UPDATE NOTICE - NDIS PIM V2.01.01.09 ===

February 1, 2001 - PCAUSA (finally) releases update V2.01.02.09 to the NDIS
Pseudo-Intermediate (PIM) driver samples for Windows 9X and Windows
Millennium.

= Major Enhancement - Support For Windows Millennium =

The major enhancement provided by this update is support for the Windows
Millennium platform.

NDIS PIM now offers a NDIS packet filtering solution on Windows 95, Windows
98 and Windows Millennium. This solution includes the capability to filter
IP on the Dialup Adapter.

= Incidental Enhancement =

The PCAIMLCE VxD can now be built under the Windows 98 DDK instead of the
Windows 95 DDK.

Understand that PCAUSA does NOT offer support for the general topic of how
to develop and debug VxDs using the Windows 98 DDK.

= More Information =

The basic description of the NDIS PIM samples can be found at:

<http://www.pcausa.com/ndispim9x/Default.htm>

The details of the NDIS PIM V2.01.02.09 update (and prior updates) can be
found at:

     <http://www.pcausa.com/ndispim9x/releasenotes.htm>

If you have a product pased on the previous V1.00.01.08 NDIS PIM release,

===   PRODUCT UPDATE NOTICE - RAWETHER V5.00.13.50 ===

April 23, 2001 - PCAUSA releases update V5.00.13.50 to the Rawether for
Windows product.

Here is a quick summary of the changes:

     * Fixed bug in the BPF filter concatenation implementation.

     * Minor enhancement that allows HookPeek to operate on some
         Wireless adapters (e.g., 3Com AirConnect).

     * A modification related to use of the W32N50 DLL concurrently by
         both a Service and a Win32 application.

     * A fix related to Power Broadcast handling on Windows ME.

     * Fixes to several bugs exposed by the Windows XP Beta 2
         Driver Verifier.

     * Other minor fixes.

For more details see the Rawther for Windows Release Notes at:

<http://www.rawether.net/support/re-releasenotes.htm>

These fixes are not "urgent" unless you are specifically interested in a fix

=== PRODUCT INFORMATION NOTICE - NEW NDIS IM SAMPLES ===

June 7, 2001 - PCAUSA has completed Beta testing of a new suite of NDIS
Intermediate (IM) driver samples that support Windows 2000 and Windows XP as
well as Windows NT.

The test period for these samples has been longer then for any other PCAUSA
product. The basic samples were "99.99-percent" functional in December,
2000. However, a number of fairly difficult problems related to specific
adapters were encountered that took a fair amount of work to accomodate.

The new samples allow single-source build of NDIS IM drivers for:

   * Windows 2000
   * Windows XP
   * Windows NT 4.0

They include three samples at the end of the test period:

Active PassThru
===========
Although it is a "passthru" driver, this sample is capable of selectively
"cloning" packets instead of simply re-wrapping them. The cloned packets
include a flattened packet data array that can be easily modified, etc.

CryptoPing
========
This sample extends the Active PassThru sample to illustrate simple
encryption and decryption of selected packets.

Packet Redirector
============
This sample illustrates interception of slected packets and passing them to
a Win32 application for inspection, modification and re-insertion back into
the kernel-mode packet flow. In the most intrusive sample ALL IP packets can
be looped through a Win32 application.

The Windows 2000 and Windows XP NDIS IM driver samples can operate on
NDISWANIP adapter.

If you have an interest, you can visit the NDIS IM Beta site to see a little
more about the samples that have been developed and tested so far - as well
as the bugs that were encountered during the process. See:

http://www.rawether.net/ndisim

We hope to have the documentation improved and the product "productionized"
soon.

===   PRODUCT UPDATE NOTICE - TDISAMP V2.00.03.11 ===

June 21, 2001 - PCAUSA releases update V2.00.03.11 to the Advanced TDI
Samples for Windows NT product.

The primary reason to make this release is to promulgate a fix for a Memory
Leak in the PassThru TDI Filter sample. This is a one-line change that can
actually be made in existing code instead of downloading the complete new
release. See the Release Notes for necessary information.

There is also a fix to the KS_in_chsum() function. If you have been using
this function, then you should incorporate the bug fix in this release.

This release includes the "PassThru Plus" (PTPlus) TDI Filter sample. Since
the PTPlus sample is so complex it has not been included in previous
standard releases of the Advanced TDI Samples.

See the Release Notes at the URL:

                 <http://www.pcausa.com/tdisamp/release.txt>

There are some outstanding problems that are not addressed in this release
but will be shortly.

In addition, several customers have asked for an "INF-style" installation
and/or a "WDM-style" driver. I will see what I can
do about making these enhancements.

Subject: Test Application For New Rawether Adalter Enumeration Routines
tdivine@...
Send Email Send Email

=== TEST APPLICATION FOR IMPROVED ADAPTER ENUMERATION ===

July 31, 2001- PCAUSA is developing various improvements to be included in
the next release of Rawether for Windows.

One of the areas the deserves attention is the adapter enumeration that
generates the list of available adapters for the NDIScope Adapter Chooser.

The current implementation uses registry mining to build the list. This
approach has several shortcomings.

In the process of developing adapter enumeration tools we have put together
a test application. We are providing this application to you to solicit your
feedback. If you are interested in improvements to Rawether in this area,
please take the time to download the "NewEnum" application and run it on
various systems.

The NewEnum test application can be downloaded as a ZIP file from the
following URL:

   <ftp://ftp.pcausa.com/downloads/newenum.zip>

The ZIP file includes a README.TXT file that provides additional
information.

The kind of observations that we are interested in include:

1.) Crashes (of course...)
2.) Adapters that are listed that shouldn't be.
3.) Adapters that should be listed but aren't.

The new enumeration method does make a call to W32N_OpenAdapter to attempt
to open candidate adapters. This step of he enumeration may not work
correctly if you are running Rawether V5.00.13.49 or earlier.

We are aware that the adapter enumeration lists PPP and NDISWAN adapters
that cannot be opened by the current Rawether for Windows. That limitation
may be at least partially removed in future versions of Rawether.

If you have an observation to make to PCAUSA concerning NewEnum, please
include redirected files that (hopefully) list the adapter your are
reporting about.

There is one remaining problem that NewEnum does not yet address. On the
Windows 98 and Windows ME platforms, if an adapter is disabled in using the
Device Manager then there is a window between that time and the next reboot
where W32N_OpenAdapter will cause a fault. Basically, NDIS allows the
disabled
adapter to be opened during that window of vunerability. If anyone has found
a fix to this problem, let me know.

=== WINDOWS XP RC2 DK DOCUMENTATION ONLINE ===

July 31, 2001 - Microsoft has released RC2 for Windows XP.

Of particular interest to this group is that the new DDK includes
DOCUMENTATION IMPROVEMENTS in the the NDIS Intermediate (IM) driver
sections - particularly in the area of instalation. For example, it finally
describes the use of the FilterClass entry as well as other INF entries.
This new information should at least partially apply to Windows 2000 as well
as Windows XP.

PCAUSA, as well as others, are probably having problems installing NDIS IM
drivers on some systems (e.g., over teaming or FAILOVER filters) because
Microsoft has not provided adequate documentation.

The Windows XP RC2 documentation is definitly better. Only time will tell if
it is actually adequate.

On the downside, Microsoft does _NOT_ plan to ship RC2 on CD to common folks
like ourselves.

The new DDK _is_ available for download if you are on the XP Beta Test
program. If you are on the XP Beta Test program do take the time do download
least the Windows XP RC2 DDK to read the documentation.

If you aren't on the Windows XP Beta program, Microsoft has put the Windows
XP DDK documentation online as part of the MSDN Library. Go to:

http://msdn.microsoft.com

Click on "MSDN Library".

Drill down (expand):

   Windows Development
       Driver Development Kit
          Network Devices And Protocols.

    -OR-

Lookup something interesting like "FilterClass" to get in the correct area
of the documentation.

I bring this to your attention because any improvement in documentation is
bound to help us all.

=== PCAUSA NDIS Developer Tools ===

November 16, 2001 - PCAUSA has made the first release of "NDIS Developer
Tools", a collection of NDIS-related utilities that you may find useful.

At this time the tools collection includes:

    * "OID Scope" - User-Mode NDIS Query Tool
    * "OID Lookup" - OID Value/MACRO Name Lookup Tool

OID Scope
========
OID Scope is a tool that I have had on my "to do" list for years. It allows
you to select any NDIS adapter and then make a NDIS query on any of the OIDs
that it supports. OID Scope uses the IOCTL_NDIS_QUERY_GLOBAL_STATS
DeviceIoControl method to make the queries. Since this method does not
actually involve a NDIS protocol driver, not all results will "make sense"
when made this way.

OID Scope only supports the Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP
platforms.

Several of the features of OID Scope (such as the display mechanism for
selecting and displaying any OID query) were extracted from updated NDIScope
application being prepared for the next release of Rawether ofr Windows.

OID Lookup
=========
OID Lookup is a simple application is a database of OID values and their
MACRO names. You can search either way.

OID information is derived from the Windows XP Gold DDK NTDDNDIS.H header
file.

More Information
============
These tools are free, and are provided in executable form only. I hope to
add a few more tools when I get some time.

March 10, 2002 - There have been several reports of problems with NDIS

with faults in ProtocolReceive handler when operating on certain Realtek/SMC

non-PCAUSA drivers, and may occur on other adapters and OSs as well.

PCAUSA was never able to reproduce the problem in its lab. However, a fix
has finally been found.

Subject: Interium Fix For Rawether Problem Opening Disabled Adapter On Windows 98 SE
pcatom
Send Email Send Email

April 6, 2002

Several Rawether users have reported problems using Rawether on Windows 98
SE under two fairly special situations:

Opening A Disabled Adapter
====================
An adapter is initially operational in the current hardware profile. The
Device Manager applet of the Control Panel is used to Disable the adapter in
the current hardware profile.

If W32N_OpenAdapter is used to attempt to open the disabled adapter, then a
fault or hand occurs.

Polling For Adapter Insertion
====================
Software that sees this problem is polling using W32N_OpenAdapter to detect
when a previously-installed adapter (e.g., Wireless PC Card) is re-inserted.

The problem is that when the PC Card is inserted there is a brief period of
time when 1.) NdisOpenAdapter succeeds but 2.) the miniport hardware
initialization is not actually complete. If the adapter handle returned
during this "window of vunerability" is used, then a fault or hang occurs.

More
===
Both of these faults happen when NdisOpenAdapter is successful, but the
adapter hardware is either not actually present or is not fully initialized.

A potential fix for this problem has been developed, and is available for
testing. The fix makes additional tests to determine the validity of the
NdisAdapterHandle before attempting to use it.

If you are a Rawether customer who is effected by this problem, please
download the candidate fix from:

IE Click: <ftp://ftp.pcausa.net/devonly/windis5/w98bugfix.zip>

FTP Url: <ftp.pcausa.net/devonly/windis5/w98bugfix.zip>

The fix consists of a modified PCANDIS3.VXD with version V5.01.13.51.

If you download and test this candidate fix, please let me know the results.

Quick feedback shows that this does NOT fix the "Polling For Insertion"

Does seem to fix the "Opening Disabled Adapters" problem.

April 29, 2002 - The next release of Rawether for Windows is soon to be
released. The new release includes several features that have been requested
as well as a variety of enhancements and fixes.

The most "exciting" new feature is a new set of alternate NDIS drivers
designed for higher-performance (lower packet loss) on Gigabit networks.

Also included is an entirely new adapter enumeration API that is much more
sensible then the current "registry mining" method. The new adapter
enumeration API is also includes real UNICODE support.

A "Wireless LAN Detector" application is provided to illustrate automatic
detection of specific adapters without user intervention. The WLAN Detector
also addresses some anomalies specific to Windows 98.

Sample executables, as well as the preliminary documentation for the next
release, are available.

August 15, 2002 - If you are Windows device driver developer then you may
have interest in this information posted in the Microsoft DDK website:

"As of September 30, 2002, the Microsoft® Windows® 2000 DDK, the Microsoft
Windows 98 DDK, and the Microsoft Windows NT® 4.0 DDK will no longer be
available for purchase or download..."

If you have any intention to develop for these platforms I would recommend
that you download the original DDKs for these versions before they become
unavailable. Also, find and download the Windows 95 DDK if you have any
interest in it.

Although Microsoft's DDK products are continually improving, it is doubtful
that the "Unified DDK" will completely support the material provided in the
original DDKs. It would be too easy to overlook some documentation, header
or library that would make the "Unified DDK" inadequate for some purpose
unimportant to Microsoft.

Subject: FYI: Microsoft "Ask the Experts" NDIS Chat Sessions In September
pcatom
Send Email Send Email

August 21, 2002 - Here is an announcement from Microsoft about upcomming
online Chat sessions specifically oriented towards NDIS development.

First a few notes of my own, then the Microsoft announcement further on.

Some Chat Suggestions from PCAUSA
========================================
It has been my experiance that these chats are a little clumsy. If you do
decide to join one, prepare beforehand. Have an idea about what you really
want to ask about. Do ask questions SPECIFICALLY about NDIS. Asking
questions about general device driver programming concepts will waste
everyone's time.

Typing in a chat is clumsy also. You might consider using Notepad and
creating a text document beforehand that has brief paragraphs that describe
each question. When online, cut and paste into the chat.

It may very well be the case that your question cannot be answered online.
It may take some research, and the developers at Microsoft are trying to be
helpful. So, have a praragraph with your email address, etc. available in
case they say "I'll get back with you on that".

Don't make your questions to long or complex. Posting code snippets in a
chat would be useless.

Do include sufficient information, however. If you have a problem only on a
specific platform or with specific software or adapters installed, mention
them so folks can focus quickly on the real problem.

If it is your first time in a chat, it might be best just to snoop.
Franlkly, it will be one of my first times as well.

Thomas F. Divine

September 24, 2002 - PCAUSA will be introducing Rawether for Windows CE
(Pocket PC 2002) at the Microsoft Windows Embedded Developer's Conference
(DevCon) October 21-24, 2002, Las Vegas, Nevada.

PCAUSA has been considering providing support for the Windows CE platform
for a long time. Until recently there have been only occasional requests for
Windows CE support - not enough to warrant development of a "little Windows"
product.

However, in the past few months interest in Windows CE has "picked up", and
PCAUSA has commited to providing support for Windows CE.

Although the Rawether for Windows CE product is not yet ready for release, a
demonstration program for Windows CE is available for download. It is
the Pocket PC 2002 version of the OID Scope application.

OID Scope for allows you to select an adapter and then make any NDIS query
that
is listed in the adapter's supported OID list.

In addition to being a PCAUSA technology demonstration tool, OID Scope is a
useful utility to anyone who is interested in exploring the OIDs that are
implemented on their Pocket PC network adapters.

You can download OID Scope for Pocket PC 2002 by sending an empty email to:

ppcoidscope.dlr@...

Comments and feedback about OID Scope for Pocket PC 2002 as well as feedback
concerning your Windows CE NDIS needs are welcome.
