# It is frustrating and wondering if there is a solution.

Yes, write to the author - smiley.

BTW, Both pToolSet and pedit have some minor problems in the Tungsten C and I
am looking into it as we speak. I will report on the Tungsten C later. Best
regards, Paul

I know that Paul responded, but I have something to add (may or may not be
relevant).

I use Crony (Crony version 2.0 to be precise) to do a *lot*. I have
noticed something interesting. If I somehow manage a hard reset (more
often than I would like! ;-) ) and I restore my Visor Prism using my
Handspring Backup Module (works perfectly *every* time!), Crony will cause
the Prism to crash. On two occasions, the Prism *appeared* OK first think
in the morning, but the fingerprints of a crash were there: the Prism
thought that it was still the day before!

I have determined that this must be caused by the Crony database becoming
out of sync with the Prism contents---I'm *guessing* that it
address-related. If I *erase* all of the Crony entries, and *re-enter*
them exactly as they were before, then all is well! I am only guessing,
but it seems as if Crony must use an application's memory address as a jump
vector, and when the applications move slightly---for whatever reason
(restoring?)---then Crony sends the program pointer out into the
weeds. But, since I know nothing about the PalmOS, I may be *way* off!

So, if---when Crony is scheduled to run something---your machine is
crashing, try deleting all the Crony entries (and maybe disable then
re-enable Crony for completeness) and then re-enter them just as they were
before.

Bruce.

p.s. I have *six* Crony entries:

          1) Do a soft-reset daily at 02:00
          2) Run a ToDo-Memo-processing pScript (long!) daily at 02:10
          3) Run a pScript to backup my scriptPad (to a 'daily' category)
daily at 03:10
          4) Run a pScript to backup my scriptPad (to a 'weekly' category)
Mondays at 03:20
          5) Run a pScript to backup my scriptPad (to a 'monthly' category)
on the 1st-of-the-month at 03:30
             (shameless plug: http://www.peditors.com/pages/ScriptPadBackup)
          6) Start DateBk4 (run after a hotsync---see below---to reclaim
alarms) daily at 06:20

Also, I use a program called "AutoSync 1.5 (by RGPS) that
initiates a hotsync daily at 06:05

          Call me "Mr. Automation"! ;-)

Oh no. I can't deal with this now - I am doing Tungsten C stuff and pToolSet
- pReplace tool.

Fixing this is a major job. What about using macros to shorten your scripts?

No problem!

Some of my scripts are only used in certain situations. I will store
them in a separate memo, use Bruces backup script to backup the main
Scriptpad and make some "switch between scriptpads" scripts.

Hello all:

A fellow peditor was kind enough to write me a note asking:

>On the peditor's forum you mention "2) Run a ToDo-Memo-processing pScript
>(long!) daily at 02:10". Is this script interesting for other peditors? Is
>it worth posting on www.peditors.com?

Since I spent a while writing a response to that personal e-mail, I thought
I would get some mileage out of it, by posting it here to see if there is
any interest.

The problem is, the people who have been posting in
Crony-automation-with-pScripting thread are probably advanced pScripters
who wouldn't learn anything from my script. Posting it on peditors.com
would probably be a more efficient way of targeting the
pScripters-in-training, but that would take a few hours of my time---which
I should *not* spend right now! Oh well... :-/

  From my private e-mail response:

------------------------------------------------
          :
          :
I'm trying a new paradigm: use memos in place of ToDos. There are several
advantages to this, the most important being the ability to use
peditPro! I have a 'standardized' title line for these ToDo-memos
(including priority, subject, year+week, context, exact-due-date[if
applicable/known]). I then have several memo categories devoted to these
ToDo memos: today's-date (e.g. "2003-May-02"), this-week (e.g. "2003w18"),
"Overdue!", "Upcoming", and "Saved ToDos". I have a space at the beginning
of each of these category names, so that they sort to the *top* of the
category list---in a known order. This is necessary when using a pScript
to manipulate category names.

The job for my memo-ToDo processing program---sometime after midnight---is to:

1) Move any memos remaining in the today's-date category to the "Overdue!"
category.

2) If it is Sunday, then move any memos remaining in the this-week category
to the "Overdue!" category.

3) Loop through *every* memo, and look for the year+week tag in the
title-line. If it matches the *current* year+week, then move the memo into
the 'this-week' category.

4) Loop through *every* memo, and look for the exact-due-date tag in the
title-line. If it matches the *current* date, then move the memo into the
'today's-date' category.

5) Change the name of the 'today's-date' category to today's date (e.g.
"2003-May-02" becomes "2003-May-03').

6) Change the name of the 'this-week' category to this week (e.g. "2003w18"
becomes "2003w19'); this category name will only actually *change* on Sundays.

So, as you can see, since the script has to loop through *every*
memo---twice!---and search for a Regular-Expression match, it can take a
long time (obviously depending on the number of memos one has)!

I can imagine that there are *not* many people who are interested in
trying-out such a complicated ToDo-management scheme. The actual *idea* of
the ToDos-in-memos---and the idea of a template title-line---came from a
guy named Jacques Turbe, who occasionally submits something to the Yahoo
"GTD" (Getting Things Done) group. I don't follow that group, but I *was*
interested in a few of his organizational thoughts. He's French, and it is
sometimes an exercise in deciphering to figure-out what he is saying, but
it can be thought-provoking. He actually put some of his posts up on a
web-site: http://avm.online.fr/cyb.html. Although he used and promoted
this system of ToDos-in-memos, he did all the category-name-changing and
searching for memos (with the appropriate week and/or date codes)
*manually*. That may actually be a *better* system, as it keeps you in
touch (figuratively *and* literally) with your ToDos, but, being the
engineer/programmer that *I* am (electrical engineering), I just *had* to
attempt to automate the entire process using pScripts!

On the other hand, although the exact implementation would probably not
interest anyone, some of the pScripting coding constructs *could* be great
learning examples. As I have said before, pScripting is really more a
black *art* than it is a science. There are so many weird quirks yielding
unexpected behavior, that it often takes trial-and-error *experience* to
find solutions..

If you would like to see this monstrous pScript, let me know, and I'll
e-mail it to you. I could do that pretty quickly. Writing-up a page on
the www.peditors.com web-site can take a long time! I spend too much time
writing...

Bruce,

Do you know about memoleaf?

http://www.redwood-creative.com/global/memoleaf.htm

You could do all of the above in a few minutes with memoleaf.

#
Although he used and promoted
this system of ToDos-in-memos, he did all the category-name-changing and

Yes, but he used memoleaf - see above.

#

I'd like to see your script - I'm curious to see how you do all that in
pScripts.

BTW I use the same system for organizing myself (GTD / Jacque's Cyberpoche
method) but I use memoleaf's category management to achieve what you're
doing in your script. I use pScripts for cyberpoche templates and I run a
search and replace script (Paul's example in the manual) to change the week
numbers to the next week for unfinished memos (e.g. this week I'll be
changing all +3.18 memos to +3.19). I also make heavy use of Jacque's action
tokens.

Cheers,

Ray

Hello,

is there a way to open one specific memo via pScript, even if the
user changes its category and / or its first line and/or the sort
order of the memos from time to time?

Or, asked in another way: On a PC it's not possible to have to files
having exactly the same filename in one directory. In pedit/memoPad
this seems to be possible. How are pedit/memoPad able to distinguish
between two identically "named" memos? Is there a kind of id
somewhere which could also be used by pScript to open one or the
other?

Memos don't have "names". They are just records #90, #1, etc. So the answer
is "no way". Best regards, Paul

P.S. Memos do have "unique IDs" but that can't be accessed by ordinary
mortals like yoo [or I, oh well, I could but I won't].

The title of a memo is a user-level abstraction. To the system, it's just
the first line of a memo. Memos are uniquely identified by their record ID.
So, there can be several memos with the same "title", but different IDs.

Would there be way to collect various cuts and copy to the clipboard

bring it up and choose among the items present on the clipboard.

Yes, I know about MemoLeaf. I have it on my machine. I also have another
freeware program that can do the category-specific operations that people
love about MemoLeaf. It is called "MassTransit":
http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodID=1473
The source-code is also available:
http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodID=2051

The purpose of my pScript was to *automate* the process. That way it does
not even take me "a few minutes." It takes me exactly *zero* minutes!

Dear pScripting peditors:

Regarding the pScript mentioned below, lacking the time to post it (and
others) to the www.peditors.com website---along with an explanation,
instructions, and comments---I just dumped it (and others) into a ZIP file
(and a Linux-friendly format).

I just created a directory called "pedit
pScripting/Miscellaneous/WBMaguireII" in the "Files" section of the Yahoo
site. I realize that this is a brazen violation of the protocol, but I
hope you will excuse me! I really didn't have time to break them up, add a
comment, and put them into the proper categories. Hopefully no one will
flame me! ;-)

Here are the files:

Windoze ZIP file:

Linux version (needlessly UUENCODEd first; oops!):

aguireII/WBMaguireII_uuencoded.tar.gz

Hopefully they can provide an idea of some value for the other pScripters
out there.

Thanks,
Bruce.

Hi Guys:

Those of you who are "experts" [more or less] in encryption, please take a
look at

			 http://www.copera.com/AESLib/

and let me know if this would be OK for pedit and pToolSet to use. Or do you
know any better Palm ported and readily available encryption SDK or library
which you'd recommend? I really need your help since I am not an expert on
encryption [well, I am not an "expert" in anything],

Best regards, Paul

Looks fine to me. The company I'm at uses Certicom's SSL library, but I
haven't been too happy with it. And I doubt you'll find a better
licenced library.

Later,
Blake.

I'm no expert either, and while I am at NIST, I'm not with the
computer security group so please don't look at my address and think
this is at all official. #include <std-disclaimer.h>

My first thought was, at least there's source code. Never trust any
kind of encryption software where you can't look at the code. For
this library, at least _someone_ can look at it. The next question
is, of course, has anyone actually done this who knows what they're
doing. Good question.

As for other libraries, there is a PalmOS port of OpenPGP:
http://www.pgpi.org/products/pgp/versions/freeware/palm/.

Palm's input methods all but ensure a very short passphrase length,
which is a real problem for any key-based encryption... an alternative
might be to carry a separate CF/SD/MMC card with a key on it.

I've used a number of encrypted notepads on my Palm, I'd be glad to
help test such a feature in pedit!

Ian

I forgot to tell that pToolSet has already a built-in encryption interface
but I have not enabled it yet since I have not found the "engine" yet.

I'm no expert and have no opinion on this particular library, but I
just want to say I'm looking forward to any encryption in pedit. I
can dump MemoSafe then. (Not that MemoSafe is a bad product; it's
just one more thing taking up space on my NX, and I would much prefer
pedit for text editing.)

Cheers!

I know next to nothing about this - I do use cipherda...

http://yanoff.sourceforge.net/cipher-da/cipher-da.html

which is based on...

http://www.klawitter.de/palm/cipher.html

which says...

" If you want to reuse the program code in one of your own programs you may
have to ask patent holder and the Cryptics Development Team for permission
first."
