I was wondering why I got emails for pToolSet 8.12 and 8.13 at the

Hi guys,
having deliberated for ages about replacing my lost TX, I found a Treo
650 on eBay that I could not refuse.

So I am now a Treo guy, and I am grateful to Paul for all the work he
did putting together the lower case navigation. I am reminded
constantly now how useful a feature it is. I reckon there has been a
cost saving too, because my mixture of apps on my Treo (which are
largely the same as my old TX)is perfect, and aside from maybe for
security and tweaks, I see no need for extra third party software.

Thanks again.
What is in the pipeline for pToolSet next?

Regards
Andy

I'd like to read about the ongoing reliability of your 650. I owned
several early Treos and absolutely loved them, until the day came, for
each one, when it broke. I actually opened some up and repaired two or
three of them -- new screen, new batteries, bad keys and so forth.
That was not a fun experience. Worse, in every case, the Treo
eventually died after just a few more months.

True, those were early units -- right at this moment I don't recall,
was it 320? (and I owned more than one model, by the way) but I've
heard that reliability is the Achilles heel of the whole line.

On the other hand, I've heard some people say they never had a
problem. Just not enough of them.

Hi Ralph.
I am amazed at the quality of this unit. I got it from eBay and it is
three years old.
Everything works fine apart from a slighty loose 5 way pad.

I have studied the ROM customisation on TreoCentral, and actually
customised my own unit to free up a whole load of dsbCache which makes
it more stable.

Never wanted a phone/PDA combi before. Never want anything other that
this again!

Yup. Hooray at last. I have one on order, so soon the subject line
will apply to me too. Meantime have worked out how I think I'll set up
differently than the TX, quite a few changes due to the keyboard and
the lovely feature additions you've been making.

The best new feature: lack of DIA. The next best: lack of Graffiti. I miss
the abbreviations though.

Paul et al,

I'm extremely pleased with my (Sprint) 755p. The only thing I
(occasionally) miss is the large screen of my TX, but the longing
eventually goes away... :-D

I do NOT miss the spontaneous hard resets of my TX, though...

If by abbreviations, you mean shortcuts, try shortcut5 by Mark Tamura -
http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/shortcut5.shtml

BTW - Is there a list of the Treo specific features in pToolSet? If so,
could you please provide a pointer?

Happy Holidays to all!

Dynamic Input Area. The rectangular *Area* at bottom 1/3 of the screen for
graf or virtual keyboard *Input* which can be *Dynamic*ally displayed or
hidden. A source of no end of problems for software developers.

Data Input Area. On older devices, it was the area at the bottom of
the screen where you would write Grafitti characters as input. Newer
devices made it "virtual" -- the DIA could be collapsed, and the area
it occupied used to display more of the program.

Virtual DIA support is quirky on PalmOS devices, and each new version
of PalmOS seems to change the rules in a way that breaks the way
programs deal with it. Paul has waxed eloquent on the topic here.

Personally, I *like* the big 320x480 screen, and getting one was the
biggest single specification for a new device when I upgraded from my
failing Tungsten E, but I don't have to write programs that support
it...

I can't think of such a list. Try pEditTool when SMSing. You'll like the

Hi, Paul,

To each his own ;-)

I work nearly exclusively on my Palm (the PC gets switched on only when my Palm
can't cope), and the two reasons I still haven't changed over from my T3 to a
Treo are the atrociously abominable NVFS - surely the worst idea any PDA
developer ever had - and Graffiti, which, together with TealScript, works so
well for me that the very idea of that tiny little Treo keaboardlet makes me
shiver.
[I've even got two spare T3s to take over when this one will finally be beyond
repair.]

Regards,

Jochen

I *think* you'll find it was Data Input Area in the old days, beck
before the notion of making it virtual and providing a 320x480 total

Hi Jochen:

NVFS on the Treo 755p is quite good. I only experience delays (but no
crashes) in Blazer.

I did the same with my pre-Intel Macs. I even recently bought a brand new
ancient eMac.
