Hi all. I am asking about this for a friend because from what I
understand Linux is not for the novice. While I may not be a novice I'm
certainly not an advanced user. I know just enough to be dangerous. LOL
Anyway, this friend has Linux installed and said, "As for Linux, I can
ping, get mail but Firefox will NOT go online. I have changed settings
galore but nothing." Can anyone shed some light on why he cannot get
firefox to go online in Linux. I bet you are going to want to know
specifics about his computer. What I know is it is an Acer laptop with
XP installed. He lives in Australia if that has anything to do with it.
Beyond that, I don't know the specifications of his computer. If there
is something else you need to know to answer the question, let me know
and I will ask him.
Thanks, Beth
If you come through EP first, it's the first right past the new Convention Center (Holly), then the road takes a left bend.
The first right then is Monterey, take that. Then the second right off of Monterey is Alamo. We're the corner house with the fence.
If we're not here...just put it on the porch.

It's an all-in-one printer/scanner/ copier.
Actually I live in Peoria but come to Washington every Sunday morning
for church. Lived in Washington for many years. Anyway, if you want
the printer(scanner/ copier) you can have it. I was planning on giving
it away to whomever wants it. You have first dibs. Just let me know.

Well, update on the printer installation. The USB cable was okay so it wasn't that, but, I decided to install it on my PC and see if it worked there. Well, it worked like a charm. So it is installed on my PC now. (I now have THREE printers installed on that computer!)
Here was something I wondered about. Since the printer was made to use with the laptop or it was my understanding that it was supposed to be compatible with it ,now I'm wondering if I should have installed the software or if I should have just let the computer find it when I plugged it in. Could installing the software mess things up if the drivers were already on the computer? Just a thought.
Also, do you think there is any chance that my printer I have been using on my PC might work on my laptop? I don't really know about the whole installation thing. Should something like a printer just work as a plug and play or do
you always need to install software.
Also, I need to get rid of one of my printers. I have an HP PSC. (might be a 750 series but I'm going off my memory which is shaky at best!) it is about 5 years old. It has always been a good printer but when I got my new computer, for some reason the old scanner wouldn't work anymore, no matter what I tried. I'm wondering now if it was just not compatible with XP. I had ME on my last computer. At any rate, the printer cartridges are damaged and I don't know if the printer heads are too, but I don't want to spend the money for the cartridges if the heads are messed up too, SO,I said all that to ask if anyone is interested in having it or have a suggestion as to what I should do with it? I had intended on getting rid of it anyway, so now is good a time as any. Just email me if you either want it or have a suggestion what to do with it.
I wish I had just plugged it in first. I thought I was being so smart
to follow the directions, which I have found out isn't always the best
way! I'm afraid I may have gimped up the works by using the cd.
As far as the printer is concerned, I had figured on advertising it on
freecycle, just wondered if anyone here would be interested first. Will
still wait to see. I have to figure out what I did with the software or
whatever I had that originally came with it. Of course, it seems to me
that you can find software for just about anything on the internet now.
Don't work on printers eh? Does sound like a very unpleasant job!
Beth-
Under normal circumstances Windows XP *should* pick up most printers without
needing to install the drivers first. As far as compatability with your
laptop goes, as far as XP is concerned it's running on an ordinary computer
and doesn't differentiate between the type.
That's not to say that laptops aren't temperamental - it's not uncommon for
them to have more trouble than average installing plug'n'play devices.
I almost never use the driver cd for a printer, instead waiting to see if XP
picks it up first. The less I interfere with my computer's workings the
happier I am. :-)
As far as your scanner goes, yes, it's likely not compatable with XP. Same
thing happened to me when I upgraded to Windows XP - there were no drivers
for my scanner and the operating system didn't pick it up.
If your printer is that old with the possibility of damage you might want to
advertise it on Peoria Freecycle and let someone else take a crack at it.
Linda, pc tech who does NOT work on printers... shudder...

I agree with lee but one thing else I would check try switching out the cable this connects the printer to the laptop... I have seen cases where cables go bad and causing exactly what you are describing.
For USB, check the connection itself, front side USB is notoriously unreliable in lots of models, Dell included. Use the ports directly
attached to the motherboard (back).
Also, check your USB controller host in Device Manager. This driver gets easily corrupted, despite some devices still working.
Also, and seen this in just a few...UNINSTALL the USB controller from
device manager. Make sure the printer is connected via USB, then reboot and let XP (?) or Vista (EWW) find the new hardware (the USB controller, not the printer). Then reboot again.
Seen it work with many a USB device where communication was shaky at best.
If parallel, check the BIOS settings. Printer may need ECP for parallel.
What type of connection, parallel or USB?
I would assume USB, but you never know....

I bought a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. I ordered the recommended
printer and bought it at the same time. I have spent hours trying to
get it to work with the computer and I'm nearly bald now. I followed
the directions EXACTLY. I have installed and uninstalled and
reinstalled and uninstalled and reinstalled and uninstalled....well,
you get the picture. It is a DEll Photo AIO Printer 926. All the
software is installed and appears to be in working order. I can use
the printer as a copier but there doesn't seem to be any
communicating between the laptop and the printer. When I go to print a
test page, it STARTS to print. Tells me it has printed 25% of the test
page and then just stops. I am at my wits end and ready to take the
whole business in and pay someone to make it work because I have
wasted so much time on it. I just don't get why two things that are
SUPPOSED to work together do NOT. I'm
soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo frustrated.
Does ANYONE have any thoughts or suggestions?????

Hi Chad,
Not sure about the Skype version. I know it was down here recently. I
will double check it but it SHOULD be right, but then the operative
word there is SHOULD.
I am running Windows XP HE version 5.1 service pack 2. Physical
memory available to Windows: 1,964,004 KB. Sorry I don't know the
conversion here but I'm sure you do. I BELIEVE I have 2 gigs.
BTW...I think I'd rather cut off my right arm than use Vista!!! No I
do not have it and do not plan to use it until I am absolutely forced
to. HOPEfully by then they will have worked out the problems of which
I have heard are many, many, many!
If I find that I didn't have the latest version of Skype I will let
you know. If I don't say then it is the latest version.
Thanks. Haven't had the SSOD for about 24 hours...ought to be about
time :D:D:D:D:D:D:D Just hope it doesn't happen just as I'm
finishing a long letter. THAT would really tick me off!!

Have you updated to the latest version of skype? They were having an issue with a version they released and it took their network down for about two days. You might try going to their site and downloading the new version if you have not already done so. How much memory is in your computer? Have you updated any of your drivers recently for any of your hardware? Also does it do it right after you turn on the computer or does it do it after you have been using the computer for a while?
Well, I keep getting the SSOD (striped screen of death) I thought I had possibly related it to using the web cam, but have had it happen when I am not using the web cam. It doesn't happen every day, and I'm on the computer quite a bit every day. It happens without warning. Suddenly I'm looking at something that looks like striped wallpaper. I can't do anything then except reboot. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501. Have had it less than a month. I don't know that it has to do with the computer itself, but maybe there is some program on my computer that is causing the problem. Anyone have an idea where to start looking? BTW I am running XP home.

Wondered what the general consensus is out there about the best
laptop. Since mine was stolen recently, I am looking to get a new one.
The insurance company will reimburse me up to $720.00. So figure I can
add to that to get a little better one. Do not want Vista!!! Want XP
and plenty of memory. It's just for personal use. Had an Acer Aspire
3003 and it was fine but I didn't have enough memory. Also want it to
be fast. Am spoiled by work computer so slow is not an option. So
looking for opinions and suggestions. Also....what are your thoughts
on refurbished. My PC is refurbished and 3 years old and, knock on
wood, has been very reliable. What do you think?
Refurbished is ok since they basically go through and replace anything that is
bad…then clean it up and re sell it. I have a Compaq Presario…and I
love it..I have it maxed with 2 gigs of memory so it zips right along…It
came preinstalled with Xp Pro..but since I am a Microsoft partner I did put
vista Business on it and it runs quite nicely! However I can see why you would
want XP…I know dell still builds laptops with XP is an option….If
you buy one with vista on it you should have a downgrade option if you have
windows XP but this requires a call to Microsoft. Please keep in mind
that they are ending support for windows XP…2years after vista was
released so at some point you will have to upgrade…so make sure what ever
you buy is able to handle vista in the future…last thing I heard is they
are looking to release service pack 1 for vista by first quarter of 08. Hope
this helps

This is such an awesome picture I had to send it too. It shows you the enormity of the event. This picture is in perspective. It is really that huge and right up on the beach. I had lunch just up the hill to the right one day when I was there.
The first link is to coastalwatch.com. This one takes you right to the ship. You will see when you get there you can access cams all over Australia. It is a live feed but times out after 2 minutes and you have to refresh.
This next link was sent to me by one of the men that maintains the cams. This one will open up in media player and will not time out. You can watch it 24 hours a day if you want. Sometimes there is nothing going on, but just watching the surf crash up against the side of the ship is neat to see. They are going
to make another attempt to turn her around but I don't give them much hope. They've already snapped some huge cables because they couldn't move her. By the way, the ship is the Pasha. She is about 40,000 tons from what I understand. She's a BIG mama. There are plenty of stories and pictures in the news. This has been a big topic of conversation. Amazing a storm could move 40,000 tons against it's will!!! But she's beached. I have some really interesting still photos of her too. I'm going to be gone all day tomorrow, so maybe I'll just forward this to the group as I won't be able to respond to any other requests, should there be any.
If you keep on having trouble then you might want to try the following link: http://www.coastalwatch.com/asx/nobbysbeach.asx. That link should
automatically open in Windows Media Player (if you are on a Windows computer).
I know this is off the computer subject, BUT it will show you what can be done once the settings are correct in your media player. Cool live video!!!
I DID wonder about the cable thing. Guess I'll go buy one and see if
that does it.
As far as the not connecting to the internet problem with windows
media player, I messed around with the settings, changing one thing
at a time and then changed it back if it didn't work. I finally
found under the "now playing" tab somewhere where you can check a
box to connect to the internet. It also said it cancels out the
other internet settings, BUT I checked it and VOILA! It works. Just
hope it doesn't mess anything else up. The ONLY thing I have ever
tried to use the windows media player for on the internet was a
police web cam near my house and this webcam in Australia where
there is a HUGE coal shipped stuck on the beach from a storm 3 weeks
ago. They keep trying to move it but I think it may be a permanant
fixture. I was in Australia in Feb and was right there where this
ship is. If anyone is interested in looking at it I have a link to
the live feed. It's pretty interesting.

Try replacing the USB cable itself…I had a similar problem with my mom’s
hp printer…I reinstalled drivers and plugged and unplugged the USB
cable…but it didn’t work until I replaced the cable….still
work to this day. Hope this helps. As far as it asking you to connect to
the internet…do you have a firewall installed that the program might need
approval before it actually connects?

well it seems I've turned out to be the one
with all the problems
and questions.
I have two printers. The older but better one won't scan anymore and
I tried everything I knew and was told to do. So I hooked up the
smaller newer one. It took a good half hour to install the software.
Once it was as installed, I went to scan something and it's telling
me there is no communication between the printer and the computer.
Told me to unplug the printer and plug it back in. Did
that...nothing. Told me to try changing the usb port. Tried
that...nothing. Before my laptop was stolen, I had this printer
hooked up to it and was able to scan on it, so I don't know what the
problem is. I tried to update the software and it keeps telling me
to connect to the internet, but since I have cable modem, I'm always
connected to the internet, so I don't get that either. When I got to
scanners and cameras in the control panel, it doesn't give me the
option of adding one. I don't get that. I don't get a lot of things
about this. So I've reinstalled the software, unplugged and
replugged, changed the USB port and set my computer to start up all
drivers and programs, just in case something was getting missed
there. I have looked all through the control panel trying to find
somewhere that I could set up the scanner. I'm obviously not getting
anywhere and now I've wasted yet several more hours trying to fix
this problem. Can anyone shed some light on this for me.

BTW, on another note...why when I have tried to update something,
like this, but there have been other things, why does it tell me to
connect to the internet. Why doesn't it RECOGNISE that I am
connected to the internet?
Just wanted to let you know that although my system STILL crashes if I
click on the webcam button in either messenger or skype, my camera IS
now working in skype. I set it to automatically run when I open a call
and it has been working. So for whatever the other problem is...it
isn't fixed, but I do have the cam in skype. So I thank you to those
who have tried to help me. Unless you have some new ideas I haven't
tried, I'm not going to worry about it at this time. I still welcome
any other ideas about this that we haven't covered since obviously
there is a problem. Thanks again

I KNOW I have too many process running but very reluctant to stop anything that I don't know absolutely for sure what it is. Here is a list of what was running this evening. I photographed it with SnagIt. Part of the list will over lap the other. If you can give me alist of things I can safely stop that would be great.
I did get that and I believe I ended up sending it to Linda? I'll
look and see if it is in my sent box and resend it. I DID add the
1gig of memory if I didn't already say it.

In a previous email you were asked to get a
screen capture of the processes that were running on your system. Were you able
to get those screen captures?

Back to the question of the webcam. First of
all let me tell you that
I put in a 1 gig memory stick so now have plenty of memory. Thanks for
that advice. A friend told me the hardest part about doing it was
going to be getting the courage to take off the cover. They were
right. It was quite simple.
Having said that, it did NOT fix the web cam problem. I reinstalled
the camera after putting in the 1gib of memory and it still crashed
the system. Back to square one. Now what do you think???? I am open
to trying just about anything.
To refresh your memory...It's a Creative WebCam Instant. The software
that comes with it will capture photos, do time lapse video, remote
monitoring, and motion detection. This all works PERFECTLY FINE. The
ONLY problem comes when trying to broadcast over the internet. I don't
know what else to try. It worked fine on my laptop, but no with my pc.

My company builds custom laptops, and also sells Fujitsu (I HIGHLY recommend them).
You should be able to get a downgrade install anywhere you ask!
Even if you cant, you can take your Vista license, and install XP if you will sit through a fairly short call with Microsoft. This does require that YOU load XP, or your vendor will.

Hi Beth-
Dell actually will still make laptops with either vista or Windows XP on them. I have included a link to their site below hope this helps.

Since I had my laptop stolen a couple of weeks ago, I will be getting a new one. Been looking and everything is loaded with that piece of junk Vista that apparently doesn't support a good portion of the programs I run. Where can I find a new laptop that is loaded with xp? Any suggestions are welcome. Also....would like to hear some opinions about what brand, etc. you think is best.
ps Havent' forgotten our discussion on the web cam, but will have to get back to that when I have time to go buy some memory for it.
