A make-it-or-break-it for me WRT wikis is tables. I was wondering
how you were going to implement tables in rich text without
purchasing some expensive software?
Hello,
at present I use version 1021 of pepys, because when I download the
newest version and install it, in the end always 1021 is installed.
Using this version now for some hours to create a hyperlink document
I want to make some remarks about it.
To my understanding at least version 1021 is the core of the program,
which gets thoroughly tested, so that it runs robust.
The program is really very easy to use and as promised one needs only
a short time, to use all of its features.
But when I imagine, that I would create a large document with
thousand pages for instance, then I would like to have available some
features, which I have listed below, according how important I rank
them for my purposes:
1. different kinds of hyperlinks, especially to other folders,
other files or websites
2. the commands: save as and automatic backup
3. indexing of all words in a document and indexing of all
hyperlinks in a document
4. characters for different languages
5. templates for different applications
6. tutorial
7. more basic formatting, editing and print formatting features
8. different layers for the layout of a page and the main hyperlinks
of a document and the text.
9. different colours for text, frames

Claus
Greetings to all,
I am new in this group and therefore I want to explain, why I have
started to use Pepys.
In my daily work I use beside the Microsoft Office suite programs like
asksam ( text retrival program), MindManager ( mindmapping program),
Sxon 2000 ( general concept mapping program ) and some other programs
for technical applications.
Several of the above mentioned programs use visual representations,
which is quite helpful for structuring information and also for
presentation purposes.
But a good structured and well printed text has still several
important advantages, because it is not easy to find a good graphical
representation for all, what one can describe with words.
And a text with hyperlinks has the added advanantage, to follow
individual paths through a text.
But to develop the full potential a program like Pepys should also
supply some features like:
- sorted list of all hyperlinks
- sorted index of all words
With these two features it would be easier for other users of a Pepys
notebook to get an overview of the contents and find every important
piece of information.
regards
Claus

I can't now reproduce this. Could you try again with the new version
and let me know if you still have the same problem.

Hello all,
Version 1.0.3.7 of Pepys is now available. This beta release fixes
one serious and two other important bugs and is a recommended upgrade
for users of version 1.0.3.6
As with all beta software there may be unforeseen problems that could
result in loss of data. If you're not comfortable with running beta
software then please don't download this. Wait for version 1.0.4.0
instead.
The download is here:
http://www.innovateer.com/downloads/pepys/beta/pepys-1.0.3.7.exe
Download this file into your Pepys installation directory and run it
from there. You can rename the executable file without any problems.
If you have any feedback on this version such as bugs or suggestions,
then please join the pepys-beta mailing list and post them there
(http://www.innovateer.com/products/pepys/beta)
The full change history for this beta release is as follows:
1.0.3.7
[-] Fixed serious bug which crashed Pepys when tab pressed (BUG 0000018)
[-] Fixed bug where spaces on empty line pushed following line down (BUG

I've fixed this in version 1.0.3.7 although to do so I have had to
disable the paragraph "space before" property. This appears to be a
bug in the MS Rich Edit Control because I managed to reproduce it in
another application that also uses the Rich Edit Control. It
only occurs if you enter spaces on a blank line between two lines that
contain text. As soon as you enter text on that line then the problem
disappears. Quite frustrating to track down! If I can't discover a way
around it then I may end up replacing space before and space after
with a simple line spacing property.
I'll upload version 1.0.3.7 shortly.
Best regards,
Ian Davis

the bug ian created for this (#26) overlaps bug #16 which i posted. it mentions
the tragic garbling of data under that i experienced once. i think i may have
been in conjunction with my use of the tab character (which crashes pepys),
since i don't thing i did the things you mention when i experienced the
garbling. on the other hand, you would probably know if you tried to use a tab,
since the crash is dramatic and immediate. soo...

Thanks for this. In fact I can reproduce this with any empty line
formatted as a header. I'll investigate this.

That is a nasty one and I'll fix it as a priority.
Thanks for your time in looking into these problems - it's very much
appreciated. There is a bug tracking facility at
http://www.innovateer.com/support/tracking which can be used if anyone
wants automatic notifications of when reported problems are fixed but
I'm happy to have people report problems here, especially if they
think other users ought to be aware of them. I've entered these bugs
as numbers 0000025 and 00000256.

Hi all,
No, this isn't an April Fool - there really is a new version of Pepys!
I've made a new beta version of Pepys available. This version contains
many bugfixes and one new feature. The internal storage and display
code has been refactored to pave the way for new upcoming features.
and hopefully there should be less bugs now so future releases can
concemtrate on adding features. The first, and most requested, new
feature is already there: you can now highlight any text and turn it
into a link simply by pressing CTRL and L. The ability to link to
external web pages is coming very soon too.
There were also two very important limitations that were fixed in this
release. Copy and paste now works reliably and undo now behaves
properly and undoes only your actions, not the hidden ones used by
Pepys when it's detecting links.
As with all beta software there may be unforeseen problems that could
result in loss of data. If you're not comfortable with running beta
software then please don't download this. Wait for version 1.0.4.0
instead.
The download is here:

[-] Fixed loss of focus bug when switching between applications (BUG 0000013)

Hello Pepys people,
To help keep track of the various bugs and new feature requests that Pepys
is generating, we've set up an online bug tracking system. We aim to use
this as a master list of all bugs and new features for Pepys. Anyone can
sign up for an account which will allow you to submit new bugs or feature
requests. You don't need an account to view the list of bugs and features
or to look at their progress. I've entered all the bugs that I am
currently working on into the system. Please sign up and add any others
you have encountered and help us make Pepys completely bug free.
You can find the tracking system here:

Hi Pepys users,
I've just uploaded a beta version of Pepys to the website. This is a
(long-awaited!) bug fix release. The two biggest fixes are to problems
with the loss of link highlighting when the about box was called up and
the handling of international character sets. There are lots of little
fixes too, including some memory leaks.
Although I'm very happy with this version, I can't test it across all the
operating systems that I would like to at the moment and there may be
unforseen problems that could result in loss of data. If you're not
comfortable with running beta software then please don't download this.
Wait for version 1.0.4.0 instead.

there.
If you have any feedback on this version such as bugs or suggestions, then
please join the pepys-beta mailing list at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pepys-beta/ and post them there.
The full change history for between this version and the last public
version (1.0.2.0) is as follows:
1.0.3.3
[-] Fixed bug introduced in 1.0.3.2 when creating new pages
[-] Fixed bug introduced in 1.0.3.2 that lost content when navigating by
history
[-] Fixed bug introduced in 1.0.3.2 that lost content when entire
paragraph was made bold
[*] Substantially improved international character and Unicode handling
[-] Fixed bug that lost links in page after accessing dialog box
1.0.3.2
[-] Fixed bug where changing paragraph style lost links
[-] Fixed bug that deleted empty paragraphs
[-] Fixed bug that prevented paragraph style spin controls from working
1.0.3.1
[-] Fixed some memory leaks

If you send me the xhtml file for the page with the Danish characters in
then I will take a look at it and see if I can fix it for the upcoming or
following release.
Please can you create a new page called something like DanishCharacters
and type the characters causing problems. Then exit Pepys without leaving
that page.
To find the xhtml file look in the directory where you installed Pepys
(probably c:\program files\innovateer\pepys). Find a directory called
Notebooks. This contains another directory called Default. In the Default
directory should be a page called DanishCharacters.xhtml - that's what I
need. Please send it to iand@....
Thanks,
Ian Davis
Hello
When using the danish letters (above 127) in pepys,
the are type in with no problems, but when I open another
page and go back, they are changed to e.g ae to "e6".
Is there a way to solve that problem ?

My inclination is to incorporate all of these methods.
> thanks for writing this software!
Thank you for your comments - they're much appreciated.
Ian
ian (et.al),
i've noticed one reliable method of inducing this bug to manifest itself: first,
click thru one layer deep from the FrontPage, then pull down the help/about
screen, dismiss it, then follow a link back to the FrontPage (it last to be a
link, not the toolbar "home" button). every time i do that, some of the links
or portions of one link on the home page will not be links anymore.
also: #1 feature request from me and my wife: provide for arbitrary text to be
set as a hyperlink.
reason:
pepys provides a way of organizing interconnected ideas, but it is too
cumbersome to represent each idea as a sequence of concatenated words with
specific capitalization rules. This is because the ideas are generally not
formalized, rather they are often represented as a sequence of natural words
within the syntax of a normal sentence.
desired user interface:
select the arbitrary word or phrase, then cause it to be a hyperlink, whereupon
it be would become underlined, and blue. example ways of causing the
highlighted text to become a hyperlink are, in order of desirability (but not
mutually exclusive):
(1) button on toolbar that is a blue, underlined text "link",
(2) ctrl-H from the keyboard,
(3) menu item: format/hyperlink
suggested implementation:
add code to parse the following additional type of tag in your .xhtml files
<a href="PageName"> link text </a>
you could impose an upper limit on the number and types of characters in the
tagged text to accommodate the file-naming conventions of the OS. since windows
supports spaces in the file names, you could substitute %20 for spaces in the
link, like normal html, and name the files exactly after the tagged text.
i would enjoy beta testing any implementations of this, and after that, i would
be willing to beta test a multi-notebook version.
thanks for writing this software!

great! that'll be a nice fix. has the bug involving links that don't show
up as links been reported? frequently when i visit a page i'll see that
many of the links are mis-parsed showing either no underline, or underline
through only part of the WikiWord. going back then forward often fixes the
problem.

Hi everyone,
It's been very quiet around here, but I thought you might like to know
that Pepys is still under active development. I've not had much time to
work on it in the past few months due to commitments to customer projects.
However, I have resumed work on Pepys and fixed a couple of the minor
bugs that have been reported. One of these was particularly annoying
since it deleted blank lines left in a page. I have also laid the
foundations for the multiple notebook version of Pepys.
I hope to release this version early in the new year - I'm putting it
through vigorous testing at the moment. This will be followed by a beta
of the multiple notebook version of Pepys, so please let me know if you
would be able to beta test this.
Wishing you all a happy holiday and new year!

I think you'll need to right click on the link and choose the 'Save
as...' option from the popup menu. If that doesn't work, let me know
and we'll dig deeper. If it does work then I'll change the website to
include these instructions.
Thanks

Hello all and Happy Holidays, which ever you choose to or not to celebrate.
Ian,
I went to the WysiWiki site and you do have to use the IP address, then it
retrieves fine.
When I went to add a page to say hello and add some comments I got a signin
screen that told me I could input any userid and not password.
I did, and got an "invalid userid or password" I tried adding a password,
same thing.
Just wanted to let you know. Thanks for setting up the WisiWiki I think well
get some good discussion once the bugs are evicted.
Curtis Seyfried.

I have set up a Wiki to discuss WysiWikis in general (not just Pepys).
You can access it at http://wysiwiki.com/wiki. It has only just been
set up which means that the domain name changes may take several hours
to become live. If the above link doesn't work for you try

I see how that would be useful on a server based wiki. However, one of
the scenarios for Pepys is to be used offline and synchronise back
with other Pepys users once the user is back in the office.
Transcluding parts of pages on the Internet will make that much harder
to do.

These are good ideas but are probably far off in the future of Pepys.
Getting the basics working will take much time and effort over the
next few months.

Pepys is getting more and more interest and I get a lot of feature
requests and of course everyone wants their favourite features as soon
as possible.
I thought I'd give you a list of the features I plan to work on in the
coming months (or am currently working on). I'd be interested in
seeing how other people here would prioritise them.
(This list is not exhaustive - there are many more features I feel are
useful, these are just the ones I've prioritised as being the most
important to me)
Bulleted and numbered lists
Multiple notebooks
RecentChanges
Individual page change histories
Editing of remote wikis
Peer-to-peer synchronisation

For general WysiWiki discussion I'll put up a wiki at
http://wysiwiki.com.
High on the priority list for Pepys is the ability to edit remote
wikis running on web servers. It would be good to define a standard
mapping file format that describes the commands a web based wiki
accepts and the urls they map to.
For example:
RecentChanges == http://wysiwiki.com/RecentChanges
Edit page == http://wysiwiki.com/{page}?edit
Delete page == http://wysiwiki.com/{page}?delete
Each wiki installation could publish one of these map files to allow
WysiWiki clients like Pepys to connect to them and browse and edit
their pages.
