Or if md5.pm already exists on his machine he could place at the top
of his script:

use lib '/insert/path/to/md5.pm/here';

However I agree that the most likely problem is simply that md5.pm
has not been installed at all on the machine.

To access HTTP Header is easy. All the CGI environment
variables (%ENV) that start with a "HTTP_" are browser HTTP
header. For example, $ENV{"HTTP_REFERER"} is the value of
the "Referer: " header.

Mostly you don't have to parse it.

It is often impossible to read a user's identity and email address
from his http transmission. After all, the user may not wish you to
know this information.

It is always, however, possible to know the user's IP address. The
following script shows how to do it when using the Apache webserver.
You can see this script in action at
http://www.jonathanmark.com/ipreader.pl

The script will return the user's login id if the user has
authenticated himself to the webserver. Most websites do not require
authentication, however.

You can find out more about the CGI module, which is built in to
modern versions of Perl, at
http://stein.cshl.org/WWW/software/CGI/cgi_docs.html

use strict;
use LWP;
use HTTP::Request::Common;

use constant ALX_ENTER => 'http://www.alxnet.com';
use constant ALX_REFERER => 'http://www.alxnet.com';

my $ua = LWP::UserAgent->new;
my $newagent = 'enter_alxnet/1.0 (' . $ua->agent . ')';
$ua->agent($newagent);

my $request = POST (ALX_ENTER, Content => [email
=> 'jonathansamuel@...', passwd => 'mangohouse426'], Referer =>
ALX_REFERER);
my $response = $ua->request($request)->as_string;

Here is the right one.

use CGI;
use strict;
my $q = new CGI;
print $q->header, $q->start_html('IP Address Reader');
print $q->h2("Your browser's IP address is " . $q->remote_host());
print $q->h2($q->remote_user() . " is logged in.") if $q->remote_user
();
print $q->end_html();

I'm running RH 7.1. The "installed" version of Perl was 5.6.0 for i386
placed in /usr/bin. I installed Bundle::CPAN which then prompted to upgrade
my version of Perl to match my machine. So now I have 5.6.1 for i586 placed
in /usr/local/bin.

Am I going to have any problems here? Do I need to remove the other Perl
and if so, how? When I install new modules and the source is complied will
it be placed in the correct local?

Thanks
Frank

Basically, this violates the user privacy. (or it will be
very easy for spammers and others to collect email
addresses) The browsers won't send users' email addresses,
unless you told the users to submit themself.

You could try membership system instead. You could ask them
to register their infomation to gain the priviledge to
access your services. However, you'll also have to prepair a
Privacy Policy first to told the users what they are
submitting, and what their submitted infomation will be used
for, before they submit their infomation.

I know of a syntax check built in perl

	 ie. perl -c myfile.pl

or do this at the top of ur perlscript

#!/perl/bin -w

and you will see warnings as ur script runs...

I think MD5.pm requires the Digest module. Not sure if
this will solve it though..... give it a try....

I was unable to find any binaries for Perl/Tk for windows. Is
there such a thing out there?

From the README:

This module is depreciated. Please use Digest::MD5 instead.

This module (MD5.pm) is just a thin wrapper around the Digest::MD5
module. It is provided so that legacy code that rely on the old
interface continue to work with the speed benefit of the new module.

You will need perl version 5.004 or better to install this module.
The Digest::MD5 module must be installed.

There was a (slightly OT) thread on the mod_perl mailing
list a little while ago about exactly that sort of thing.

Have a look through the thread here:

it might give you some idea about what is possible.

There are binaries available at Activestate.com or just use PPM to install.

It's funny that you ask that at this time. At work we are migrating from
Perl 5.005 to 5.6.1, so for some time we will have both installations on 1
server.

As far as we know/believe/wax philosophically (mind you we are starting the
migration this week so I may have to revise my answer when it is all over
;-) ) each installation of Perl will be total separate. Everything hinges
upon which Perl interpreter you call. In your case when you call
/usr/bin/perl you will get the 5.6.0 installation and if you call
/usr/local/bin/perl you will get the 5.6.1 installation. When installing
something from CPAN you will need to make sure you are calling the correct
Perl interpreter. If you are used to typing "cpan" at the prompt then you
will need to that somewhere the cpan command has been set up to be script
for: "perl -MCPAN -e shell". Of course in your case you will want to make
sure that it is pointing to the correct interpreter.

When we are done with our migration we plan on renaming the old Perl
interpreter and setting up a symbolic link to the new interpreter so that we
should not have any problems. I would recommend at least doing this. That
way you know that you are always using the correct one.

Hope that helps,

Subject: [PBML] Two Perls on Same Machine

I'm running RH 7.1. The "installed" version of Perl was 5.6.0 for i386
placed in /usr/bin. I installed Bundle::CPAN which then prompted to upgrade
my version of Perl to match my machine. So now I have 5.6.1 for i586 placed
in /usr/local/bin.

Am I going to have any problems here? Do I need to remove the other Perl
and if so, how? When I install new modules and the source is complied will
it be placed in the correct local?

Thanks
Frank

You can use a module that is not install on the server by doing the following:

- get MIME::Base64 from CPAN
- put it on your server into a directory where you can get at it
- do everything to install that module with the exception of "make install" since you need to be root
- remove all the unnecessary files (just to clean up) - it differs from module to module
- in your program add:
use lib "relative_path_to_the_directory_where_your_module_is";
use MIME::Base64

This will tell Perl to first look in the directory relative_path_to_the_directory_where_your_module_is.  If it does not find the module there then it will look in the standard places.

Good luck!

It wasn't working at all when I tested it. It's just
giving me a server 500 error. I did chmod 755 on it
already.
#!/usr/bin/perl
&parsedata;
&sendemail;
&printthanks;
sub parsedata
{
  read(STDIN, $in, $ENV{'CONTENT_LENGTH'});
  @in = split(/&/, $in);

  foreach $i (0 .. $#in)
  {
   $in[$i] =~ s/\+/ /g;
   $in[$i] =~ s/%(..)/pack("c",hex($1))/ge;
   ($key, $val) = split(/=/,$in[$i],2);
   $in{$key} .= '\0' if (defined($in{$key}));
   $in{$key} .= $val;
  }
}
{
  open (SENDMAIL, "| /usr/bin/sendmail -t -n");
  print SENDMAIL <<EOM

To:
From:
Reply-to:
Subject: Email from the mail form
fullname = $in{'full_name'}

EOM

}
sub printthanks
{

  print "Content-type: text/html \n\n";
  print <<"EOM";

<html>
<head>
<title>Thanks for Submitting the Form</title>
</head>
<body bgcolor="#ffffff">
<h2>Thank you for answering our form</h2>
You should receive a response shortly.
</body>
</html>
EOM

  print "";

}

The sole reason I wrote the script above was because I
couldn't get the script below to work?

#!/usr/bin/perl

require "../subparseform.lib/subparseform.lib";
&Parse_Form;
print "Content-type:text/html\n\n";

$to = $formdata{'to'};
$from = $formdata{'from'};

$subject = $formdata{'subject'};
$contents = $formdata{'contents'};

open (MAIL, "|/usr/lib/sendmail -t") || &ErrorMessage;

print MAIL "To: $to \nFrom: $from\n";
print MAIL "Subject: $subject\n";
print MAIL "$contents\n";

close (MAIL);

print "Thanks for your comments.";

sub ErrorMessage {
         print "<P>The server has a problem. Aborting
script. \n";
         exit;
}

I was hoping to make the first script work by not
having to require the subparseform.lib....Now if I can
get either script to work I will feel happy. I'm still
new at this but am trying. Any help would be great.

well, if that's the actual script, you never named the "sendemail"
subroutine...that could cause a problem.

<snip>
sub parsedata <---okay, fine
{
  read(STDIN, $in, $ENV{'CONTENT_LENGTH'});
  @in = split(/&/, $in);

  foreach $i (0 .. $#in)
  {
   $in[$i] =~ s/\+/ /g;
   $in[$i] =~ s/%(..)/pack("c",hex($1))/ge;
   ($key, $val) = split(/=/,$in[$i],2);
   $in{$key} .= '\0' if (defined($in{$key}));
   $in{$key} .= $val;
  }
} <------"sub sendemail" should come after this, I think
{
  open (SENDMAIL, "| /usr/bin/sendmail -t -n");
  print SENDMAIL <<EOM

Can anyone tell me how to get the pid of a browser?

Also, if I open 2 windows of netscape with the same
url ..eg - www.abc.com
will both have different pids?

Well, the output of STDERR (or say, error messages) will be
written to error_log. Have you checked it?
