The summer heat has broken. The possibility of autumn lingers in the air.
And that means it time to consider the possibility of a second season for
Perl Seminar New York.
In 2000-01 we met on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from December thru May.
If we adhered to that schedule (which we don't absolutely have to), our fall
meetings would occur on Sept. 11, Oct. 9, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11. Rather than
commit to organize meetings beginning on the first of those dates, I'd like
to get an idea of what the support for a 2nd season looks like. To be more
concrete: I'd like to be able to line up 4-6 presentations -- i.e., enough
for 2 sessions -- before scheduling session #1. That way, we'll start with
some momentum. We'll deal with the meeting location question once we know
we've got demand for our workshops.
If that sounds like a reasonable (or highly unreasonable) idea to you,
please let me know at your earliest opportunity. Better still, if you'd
like to do a presentation, give us a 3-sentence description of your topic.
Remember, you don't have to be a world-class expert to present your work at
PSNY (though such experts are always welcome, as well).
What code have you written on your summer vacation?

I could do a brief presentation on Perl Development using the Emacs editing
environment.
This would require being able to hook up my laptop to a projector, where all
can see.

These dates work for me.

I am out of town until September 10, so I won't be
able to present at the first session, but October or
November would be fine. Topic: using Perl modules to
process XML data.

It's fairly simple Perl, but I wrote a long (not much good for demos)
program that improves LogRotate.pm, on CPAN.
The original author was too busy, to look into adding my modifications,
and posting them.
About the only thing that is interesting is that the program does work,
but I get a *strict* warning error, which I have to mask, and I'm not sure
why.
Since there is nothing unusual in the Perl, it probably would be a short
presentation.

Not really, I'd be glad to listen and take notes. Really.
Friends:
We now have a sufficient number of expressions of interest in making
presentations to say that a second season for Perl Seminar NY is viable. We
have enough possible presentations to fill two meetings' schedules. That
will give us enough momentum to get going.
However, we face the meeting space problem once again. In all likelihood we
will not be able to use the conference room at the company where we met from
January through May of this year. So we turn to our members for suggestions
for space.
Ideally, we'd like (a) a room that can seat 10-20 people, (b) available the
same night of the month (e.g., 2nd Tuesday) from our starting month (looks
like October) through May, (c) with presentation facilities such as a
whiteboard, overhead projector and -- this becomes more popular every
year -- data projector. If you know of space that meets even *some* of
these criteria, please let me know. You can contact me off list at
jkeen@....
One suggestion that has already been made is to affiliate with the NY PC
Users Group, which has a classroom/office at 8th Ave & 34th St in Manhattan.
It has data projector, computers in the room, etc. However, to get that
space (a) we'd have to have 5 members of PSNY as dues-paying ($45/year)
members of NYPC (I know of at least 2 joint members so far); (b) we
designate a board or steering committee for PSNY, and (c) we have to see
what meeting nights are available at that office.
Suggestions, ladies and gentlemen?

Friends:
Perl Seminar NY has worked out an affiliation agreement with New York PC
Users Group (NYPC), the result of which will be that we will be listed as an
NYPC Special Interest Group (SIG) and be able to use the NYPC offices for
our monthly workshop meetings.
We'll have more details within the coming week. For now, hold this date:
Tuesday, November 20, 2001
6:15 - 8:15 pm
NYPC
481 8th Avenue, Suite 1560
Manhattan
481 8th Ave is on the northwest corner of 8th Ave & 34th St just uptown from
Penn Station. It's a building which is part office suites and part Ramada
Inn. (And for Perl hackers of a certain age, it was formerly the Moonie
headquarters and before that the Hotel New Yorker.)
More details to come soon! Thank you very much.
Jim Keenan
Brooklyn, NY
jkeen@...
As reported last week, Perl Seminar NY will soon be starting its second
season. By virtue of an affiliation with NY PC Users Group, we'll be
meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the NYPC office suite near Penn
Station:
Tuesday, November 20, 2001, 6:15 - 8:15 pm
NYPC
481 8th Avenue, Suite 1560 (northwest corner 8 & 34)
Manhattan
Trains: A/C/E to 34 St & 8 Ave; 1/2/3 to 34 St & 7 Ave; LIRR/NJT to Penn
Station
Back in August we canvassed our membership to determine whether there were
enough interesting presentations out there to warrant a second season. The
answer was yes. But because some of our presenters cannot appear until
January or subsequent months, we have open spots on our schedule for our
November 20 and December 18 meetings. We'd like to encourage every one to
think about presenting some code.
You can choose among different length presentations:
1. Full scale: for well-polished presentations we'll allocate a full hour
(including Q & A).
2. Medium scale: for which we'll allocate 20-40 minutes.
3. Lightning talks: 5 minutes max.
You can choose among different presentation technologies:
1. Data projector.
2. Easel pad.
3. Your own charming conversational skills.
You can be of different levels of Perl knowledge:
1. Author/maintainer of CPAN modules.
2. Perl expert, but less so in other languages.
3. Not a Perl expert, but know cool ways of linking Perl to other
languages/programs.
4. Advanced beginner.
You can be of different levels of presentational experience:
1. Damian Conway
2. Everybody else
The code you can present can be of differing stages of development.
1. It's going out to the CPAN mirrors even as we speak.
2. This is my first module.
3. Damn, I can't figure out why it's now DWIM-ming!
As you can see, we're flexible. Let us know what you'd like to present and
we'll help you get there. You can either reply to the list or directly to
me (in which case, including a phone number is helpful).
Thank you very much. We look forward to seeing you on Nov. 20.

I'm throwing this message out to the group because I'm
in a bind. The high speed connection I normally use

Does anyone have a place where I can jack in with my

needing it from 11:30am to 4:00pm (4 1/2 hours),
Tuesday through Friday this week.
Any recommendations of locations available in NYC

I suggest you get a cheap (around $80) 802.11b card and try your luck at
Starbucks; I have never tried this myself, however, so I don't know what
you can do with that. I guess you ought to drop by and check first to

There is also the free NY net access; check the archives of the NY Linux

there are only 2 or 3 useful locations in Manhattan, so that probably

I work with an ISP in Queens, about 45 min from Manhattan, which has a
corporate meeting room.
I'd say that the section of Queens is not especially professional, but
the room is.
There are a bunch of net cafes & copy shops around Manhattan.
You can sometimes rent the NYPC office, which is corporate enough in
looks, location & equipment
but still has a 56K dialup.
Probably your best bet is the ISP I work with. Email me direct, or phone.

A message from your moderator:
I was surprised to receive a polling request this afternoon because
we had never before used or discussed using the polling feature of
our Yahoo groups list. When the e-mail arrived announcing the poll,
it did not come identified with the name or e-mail address of the
person requesting the poll; it just appeared to come from
perlsemny@yahoogroups.com -- which people could have interpreted as
coming from the moderator, when it did not.
Based on past issues we've had with appropriate use of mailing lists,
I felt it would be wise to discontinue access to the polling feature
(which I did not realize was public) until such time as we had the
opportunity to discuss this issue collectively and in person at one
of our monthly meetings. I did so, and that's why some of you got an
error message when you went to respond to the poll. I sent a
personal e-mail to the member who posted the polling request
explaining what I was doing and inviting him to re-post the same
request as a regular message rather than as a poll.
For what it's worth, my own preferences as to what our Yahoo Groups
site should be used for are: (1) messages posted by members and
viewable by public; (2) calendar viewable by public (I think I've got
the settings right now); (3) bookmarks (links to other sites); (4)
files uploaded by members for members' use. If we collectively
decide to allow polling, I'll change the settings as needed.
I hope this clears up any misunderstandings.

Friends:
Perl Seminar NY got its second season off to a good start last Tuesday, Nov
20, at our new meeting location at the NYPC office suite at 481 8 Avenue.
We had at least a dozen people, so the room certainly didn't feel empty.
Participants included veteran perlsemny members, some familiar faces from
the NY Perlmongers who had not previously attended perlsemny meetings as
well as people who found out about us from the NYPC mailing and calendar. A
good mix!
Bruce Ingalls presented on the work he's been doing to make Emacs a better
development environment for Perl -- and progress has definitely been made
since Bruce first touched on this subject last February! This work is an
extension of the work Bruce and others are doing on an aspect of Emacs
called Emacro; you can learn about that at
http://www.sourceforge.net/emacros. I'm hoping that Bruce will have some
other links ready for us in a few days. Before Bruce spoke I talked about
my DataPresenter module (http://www.concentric.net/~Jkeen/datapresenter/).
After the meeting Glenn Maciag suggested an additional method for that
module with some really ingenious coding that has forced me to go back and
study aspects of Perl 101 I had previously overlooked. And if that isn't
the purpose of a Perl Seminar, what is?
We have various members who have volunteered to make presentations in
January and future months, but nothing locked in yet for our December
meeting, which will be Tuesday, Dec 18. Let me encourage any of you who
have not presented before to dip your toes in the water. You can suggest
topics either on list or off, and we'll help you shape an interesting
presentation. (Perl Seminar NY is about writing better code, but also about
presenting code better.) Let's hear your ideas!

Dear PerlSem Members and Jim Keenan:
Hello, my name is Josh Rabinowitz, and I was the
mystery author of that fateful poll. I've been
programming perl for fun and profit since, oh, 1995 I
guess. I had no idea the problems I could create
simply by creating a little poll for fun.
For the record, the poll asked:
What is your favorite Perl module?
DBI, CGI, CPAN, XML::Parse, Befunge,
Data::Dumper, Memoize, or "other".
I'd have to pick CPAN as my favorite. Otherwise I'd be
in sysadmin hell^H^H^H^H, ahh, 'make install' world
more. I'm also enamored of DBI and Memoize.
Also, I don't believe there _is_ a befunge perl
module, Befunge is actually a language "created in
1993 by Chris Pressey for the purpose of being
original, entertaining, and hard-to-compile." :)
There, now I've let the cat out of the bag. Actually,
a search on 'perl befunge' on google unearths some
actual perl befungitis, but I won't dwell on that
here. (You're welcome.)
We now return you to your irregularly-scheduled
perlsemny discussions; and I'm interested to hear
other people's favorite perl modules.
Sincerely
Josh Rabinowitz

software development experience and about 7 years of
sysadmin experience. I'd be happy to provide a resume
or talk with anyone interested.

Why isn't LWP listed!
LWP makes life worth living.

Perhaps we could meet at a bar and invent a regex based drinking game?

Josh/all:
While the idea of a session at 11:15 pm is, um, thought-provoking, I don't
see where on our site you're picking up that time. The calendar on our page
clearly says 6:15 pm. See
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/perlsemny/calendar?s=0&t=1008651600
(which requires you to sign-in first; contrary to what I said yesterday,
while the messages and links are completely public, the calendar requires a
sign-in)
Where did you see 11:15 pm?

Matt/Josh: Please check the Timezone settings you are using for reception
of Yahoo Groups calendar info. Note that on the right-hand side of the JPG
you circulated you can see "Timezone: Greenwich ... Time." So we will
indeed be meeting on 12/18 at 11:15 pm GMT ... known better to most of us at
6:15 pm EST.

ah. Tricky..... You'd think yahoo would know I'm not
in a European time zone! Anyways, thanks for the
clarification and fix, James-- apparently this
affected people other than me, too.

Usually when we're foraging for presentations for our monthly meetings we
solicit presenters first and topics second. But here's a topic of interest
to some of us for which we could use a speaker:
What Is a Make File? How Do I Get My Code Ready to Go on CPAN?
It would be interesting to hear from someone who has posted modules on CPAN
and understands issues of make files, test files, etc.
Next meeting: Tues 12/18.
Thanks.
