Does PB 5 use a different file format and extension to that of PB 4?

If not, is it safe to try PB 5 beta with existing brain files?

AFAIR you should do this:
1. chmod 777 <filename.sh>
2. ./<filename.sh> (you run this file)

please try...

Hi,
I have just downloaded PersonalBrain for Linux on a Ubuntu machine.
BUT what I get is a file with the extension ".sh". There are not tips
on how to use this file.

How do I use this file to install PersonalBrain? Are there any
instructions anywhere as to how to do this?

Looking forward to a reply.

Sincerely

I was trying the following:

I use various email addresses - most of them only
to be forwarded to one single googlemail address.

[] I entered all my email addresses as a thought
[] I entered the googlemail address
[] Now I wanted this one gmail to be linked to the
formerly entered email addresses as a jump...

Which leads me to the question: are jumps directed?

Thanks for your help :D

Well, that is very good news. It is my exactly what I want to do aswell, sort my
music.

What I cannot figure out is the following - and may be this is where I
understand PB not at all:

I will create a brain music with the top level thougths 'piece', 'composer',
'genre', 'location'. With time proceeding I will have hundreds of children to
'composer' (thounsend of 'actors') - so my screen will be full with unreadable
text...

And how do I do mass-editing? How can I create a jump for 20 'compose' to the
'genre: blues'?

>Do you mean you already have standard database that you want to import,
>or would you start from scratch?

I would sort of enter the data in a personal database - maybe even a spreadsheet
- it is a very simple db-model after all - and hopefully get them somehow into
PersonalBrain. If I have to drag&draw all the relations for each movie/piece,
I'll be dead and gone before I'll finish...

Also, I am considering the possibility, that this is not the way to use PB?

Thanks very much :D

What's the problem? I have just such a database, which indexes my DVD and

Do you mean you already have standard database that you want to import,

Howdy :)

I am determined to make a final call on the
PersonalBrain and I hope you can help me to make that decision. I've
known PB for a long time (still got a freeware version for Win95) and
have never really come beyond playing around with it.

When I
first saw it, I was immediately thrilled by the way Thoughts
interlinked, when you grow a PB slowly, but I never worked out a
sufficient way to enter say 1000 movie titles with 100 directors and
3000 actors and 20 genres and 20 keywords. Which would be rather small
a database if you're interested in movies.

Can you help?

I merged diferente Brains using a previous version (copy-paste thoughts) of
Persona Brain , and I know that recent beta versions have a menu option to
"merge brains".

I had emailed this list before about the first problem: accented characteres
didn`t copied correctly. I believe this problem is solved in newer version,
(I didn't test).

But I have currently other problems:
-Thought Types with same names are copied from diferente brains. I have now
two types WITH SAME NAME in the list of thought types, and it's impossible
delete one of them (or merge types).
- Similar problem with two LINK TYPES with same name of types.
- I had a long list of thought types and long list of Link types, so if I
click (links or thought) to select type, I can't see the last options
after the bottom of windows display. It's impossible "scroll down" the list.
(I'm using alternative solution: selecting first "properties", of link or
thought, so I can scroll down options of types inside the properties
windows).

Thanks for any help or solution in next versions...

Hi Paulo,

PersonalBrain 4.1 supports importing of data through XML. If you copy a
few thoughts with notes into the clipboard (Edit > Copy Thoughts), you
will see the XML file format. In order to import information from your
database, you will need to put it into the same XML format and then
paste the data into PersonalBrain.

Hi Jostein,

Gotomeeting requires either MAC or PC...We have asked for Linux as a
feature request. You could try it but their official answer is no. So if
you have access to a PC or Mac attend on one of those. If not, we will
be recording the event and have the recording available to you and on
our site within a couple days. You can also still call the audio numbers
and listen to the seminar. The first half of the event will be very
conceptual in nature and be a good listen.

FYI here are the gotomeeting official system requirements:

For PC-based Attendees

* Required: Windows 2000, XP Home, XP Pro, 2003 Server, Vista
* Required: Internet Explorer 5.0 or newer, Netscape 6.0 or newer
or Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or newer
* Required: Stable 56k, cable modem, ISDN, DSL or better Internet
connection
* Recommended: Minimum of Pentium 400 MHz with 256 MB of RAM

For Macintosh(r)-based Attendees

* Required: Mac OS(r) X 10.3.9 (Panther(r)) or newer
* Required: Safari(tm) 1.3 or newer, Firefox 1.5 or newer on
PowerPC G3/G4/G5, or Firefox 1.5.0.2 or newer on Intel(r)
(JavaScript(tm) and Java(tm) enabled)
* Required: Stable 56k, cable modem, ISDN, DSL or better Internet
connection
* Required: PowerPC G3/G4/G5 or Intel processor (G4 450 MHz with
256 MB of RAM or better recommended)

Best regards,

Shelley

Hi Shelley,

I solved the problem by merging the much larger Brain into the tiny Brain.
The other way round came up with a grayed out "Paste" at the final step.
Your technical department including Matt Caton are mystified on this
problem. Because of confidentiality, I cannot send you a Brainzip. Let's say
the problem is solved, your suggestion of moving selected thoughts should
handle all my future "merge" requirements.

I deleted the offending large Brain after the successful merge. I believe
the large Brain had a synapse disconnect!

Please keep up the informative web seminars.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi All,

I want to let you know about a Web event I will be hosting on May 22
with James Burke.

James Burke is a British science historian, author, and television
producer best known for his documentary television
series, "Connections". He uses PersonalBrain to present "the
connected world".

We will be focusing on how the connections approach to information
will change the way we use knowledge. How it will redefine what we

Hi Peter,

Harlan's instructions are for selecting all the thoughts in your
Brain. To select specific Thoughts hold down your control key and
click on the Thought you want. This will let you bring a set of
specific Thoughts into PersonalBrain's selection box.

Right click on the selection box once you have all the Thoughts you
want and select copy. Now you can open any Brain you need to paste
these Thoughts.

I cover mass selecting and copying Thoughts in my seminar on editing
your Brain you can watch it on http://www.thebrain.com/recordings
page or go directly to this seminar at:

https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/419353646

If you want to do a web meeting on this let me know.

Best regards,
Shelley

Hi Harlan,

Could you publish this in step by step? I'm having difficulty selecting the
thoughts I want to merge. Also can't find any merge information in the PDF
User Manual.

Using PB 4.1.3.2.

Hi cícero,

Yes, merging has been available since the release of version 4.1. Once
you have upgrade to version 4.1:

To merge Brains, open the Brain you want to merge, select all the
thoughts (go to the use Reports tab, clear all of the filters or hit
the refresh button if they are already cleared, then go to the Edit
menu and select Add Report to Selection) then choose Edit > Copy
Selected Thoughts. Open the Brain you want to merge the copied
thoughts into and select Edit > Paste Thoughts.

Regards,
-Harlan

You can download it at http://www.thebrain.com/#-53

The program is located on this page right under the Mac download...

Enjoy!

I used to use Personal Brain when I was a Windows
user, but now I have migrated to the open source
community. Could someone please advise if this
wonderful app (Personal Brain NOT Windows) has a Linux
release.

Thanks

James

Hello,

I use the latest beta (4.2.1.0) with a large brain. Attached are a lot
of Word files (*.docx), which are moved into the brain.
After some testing, I now conclude that my wordfiles are not indexed
correctly, because new words I enter in a attached wordfile are not
seen in the search results.

Any idea?
